Steinbeck in full JOHN ERNST STEINBECK (b. Feb. 27, 1902, Salinas, Calif., U.S.d. Dec. 20, 1968, New York, N.Y.), American novelist, best known for The Grapes of Wrath (1939), which summed up the bitterness of the Great Depression decade and aroused widespread sympathy for the plight of migratory farm workers. He received the Nobel Prize for Literature for 1962. Steinbeck attended Stanford University, Stanford, Calif., intermittently between 1920 and 1926 but did not take a degree. Before his books attained success, he spent considerable time supporting himself as a manual labourer while writing, and his experiences lent authenticity to his depictions of the lives of the workers in his stories. He spent much of his life in Monterey county, Calif., which later was the setting of some of his fiction. Steinbeck's first novel, Cup of Gold (1929), was followed by The Pastures of Heaven (1932) and To a God Unknown (1933), none of which were successful. He first achieved popularity with Tortilla Flat (1935), an affectionately told story of

When I face the desolate impossibility of writing 500 pages, a sick sense of failure falls on me, and I know I can never do it. Then gradually, I write one page and then another. He moved to New York City in 1925, where he worked briefly as a bricklayer and reporter. Two years later, he returned to California and began his career as a novelist. By the late 1930s, Steinbeck earned both critical recognition and popular success for his populist novels, including Tortilla Flat In Dubious Battle (1936) and Of Mice and Men (1937). His writing used naturalistic language and displayed a powerful social conscience, bringing to life the everyday struggles of the poor in Depression-era America. His most famous novel, The Grapes of Wrath (1939), followed a displaced Oklahoma farm family which travels to California in desperate search for work.
During World War II, Steinbeck worked as a war correspondent in Italy and Northern Africa for the New York Herald Tribune . After the war, he continued writing novels and did occasional screenwriting for Hollywood. His later work remained popular, especially the novel

Steinbeck, John Steinbeck, John, , American writer, b. Salinas, Calif., studied at Stanford. He is probably best remembered for his strong sociological novel The Grapes of Wrath, Cup of Gold The Pastures of Heaven (1932), and To a God Unknown Tortilla Flat (1935), an affectionate yet realistic novel about the lovable, exotic, Spanish-speaking poor of Monterey, was enthusiastically received. A compassionate understanding of the world's disinherited was to be Steinbeck's hallmark. The novel In Dubious Battle (1936) defends striking migrant agricultural workers in the California fields. In the novella Of Mice and Men The Moon Is Down (1942; later made into a play), about Norwegian resistance to the Nazis. The Grapes of Wrath (1939; Pulitzer Prize), while treating the plight of dispossessed Dust Bowl farmers during the 1930s, presents a universal picture of victims of disaster. Steinbeck's depiction of the westward migration of the Joad family, and their subsequent struggles in the exploitative agricultural industry of California, is realistic and moving, and he endows his humble characters with nobility. Steinbeck's other works are diverse, ranging from the literal account of a voyage, The Sea of Cortez (1941; written with the marine biologist E. F. Ricketts); to a parable

BIO
John Steinbeck was born in Salinas, and lived the early part of his life in Monterey County, California. It was here that Steinbeck developed a knowledge and love of the natural world and the diverse cultures that figure so prominently in his works. In 1930, Steinbeck met marine naturalist Edward F. Ricketts, and a close friendship developed. During the early to mid 1930s, Steinbeck lived with his wife Carol in the family cottage on 11th Street in Pacific Grove. He produced works including THE RED PONY, PASTURES OF HEAVEN, TORTILLA FLAT, IN DUBIOUS BATTLE, and OF MICE AND MEN. They moved to Los Gatos in the later half of the decade. THE GRAPES OF WRATH earned Steinbeck a Pulitzer Prize. In the 1940s, Steinbeck spent most of his time living in New York and traveling abroad. By then he was an internationally acclaimed author. While he hobnobbed with the N.Y. elite, he wrote nostalgically of life on the Monterey waterfront. Steinbeck’s old friend Ed Ricketts became the inspiration for "Doc" of CANNERY ROW and SWEET THURSDAY. Although Steinbeck wrote CANNERY ROW in N.Y., he returned briefly to Monterey in 1944 with his second wife, Gwen, and son Thom - living in the Lara-Soto adobe on Pierce Street. In 1948, after his second marriage ended and the death of his friend Ed Ricketts, he returned to the family cottage on 11th Street in Pacific Grove for several months.
