Short Bio
William Stafford was born on January 17, 1914 in Hutchinson, KS. He attended the University of Kansas for his BA and MA, and he received his doctorate from the University of Iowa. His writings won numerous awards, and he served as the Consultant in Poetry for the Library of Congress. He has lectured across the world and settled to live in Lake Oswego, Oregon and to teach at Lewis and Clark College in Portland. Poems
The poetry of William Stafford represents a slightly more elaborate form of conversation and a good, basic view of the world around us. He writes humorously and seriously, and his simple words lead the reader to a deeper meaning. I love his poetry because he does not try to impress you with it, or use it to talk over you, or take you away from anything relative with it. It's the poetry I read for a good break from a more complicated world.
Some Things the World Gave
Times in the morning early
when it rained and the long gray
buildings came forward from darkness
offering their windows for light.

William Stafford's Kansas
William Stafford's Hutchinson
One Home Mine was a midwest homeyou can keep your world.
Plain black hats rode the thoughts that made our code.
We sang hymns in the house; the roof was near God. The light bulb that hung in the pantry made a wan light,
but we could read by it the names of preserves
outside, the buffalo grass, and the wind in the night. A wildcat sprang at Grandpa on the Fourth of July
when he was cutting plum bushes for fuel,
    before Indians pulled the West over the edge of the sky. To anyone who looked at us we said, "My friend";
liking the cut of a thought, we could say "Hello."
(But plain black hats rode the thoughts that made our code.) The sun was over our town; it was like a blade. Kicking cottonwood leaves we ran toward storms. Wherever we looked the land would hold us up. Prairie Town There was a river under First and Main; the salt mines honeycombed farther down. A wealth of sun and wind ever so strong converged on that home town, long gone. At the north edge there were the sand hills.

STAFFORD, WILLIAM (ca. 1780-1840). William Stafford, one of Stephen F. Austin's qv Old Three Hundred qv qv were grown by that time, and their sisters had married Clement C. Dyer qv qv halted at Stafford's plantation. Upon resuming their march, the soldiers burned the Stafford residence and the gin houses. In October 1836 Stafford appointed his wife his agent and attorney in Texas and gave much of his Texas property to his four grown children. In December 1838 fifty citizens of Fort Bend County petitioned Congress to permit Stafford to return home and be exempt from judicial prosecution on the grounds that Moore, the man he had killed, had been "destitute of character" and was "much addicted to brawls." Stafford, the petitioners argued, was ordinarily a peace-loving and enterprising citizen and had killed Moore only after much provocation. On December 27, 1838, the House recommended executive clemency. Stafford returned to live at Stafford's Point until his death, sometime before September 25, 1840, when Clement Dyer was appointed administrator of his estate. BIBLIOGRAPHY: Eugene C. Barker, ed.

A Conversation with William Stafford
William Stafford was born in 1914 and grew up in a series of small Kansas towns. As a conscientious objector he served in Civilian Public Service camps in Arkansas and California during World War II. He earned his degrees at the Universities of Kansas and Iowa, and taught for many years at Lewis and Clark College in Oregon. Over the thirty-some years that Stafford has been publishing poetry he has become one of the most widely recognized and admired of contemporary American poets. His many collections of poems include the National Book Award winning Traveling Through the Dark (Harper, 1962), Stories That Could Be True (Harper, 1978) and most recently An Oregon Message (Harper, 1987) and A Scripture of Leaves (Brethren Press, 1989). He has also published three books of prose, two of them in the Poets on Poetry Series from the University of Michigan Press. Now retired from full-time teaching, he continues to publish and speak widely.

Stafford, William At the Bomb Testing Site
Genre Poem Keywords Catastrophe Nature Science Society Summary At the bomb testing site, a lizard waits. It is expecting something, awaiting "something farther off / than people could see . . . . " The lizard grips the earth, "its elbows tense . . . ready for a change." Commentary A 12 line poem that creates a single image: evil, human folly, and the potential for unlimited destruction are all evoked by the image of a lizard waiting tensely in the desert of "a continent without much on it." Is this the bomb testing site before the bomb explodes? Or is it the site and the continent after the bomb, when not much is left but lizards?
