The Red Leaves of Night Poems by David St. John (ISBN 0060930160)
Possession and loss, rapture and despair: David St. John's narrator in this dazzling collection of poems remains unflinchingly aware that the trajectory between these two states is both brief and irresistible. Like modern Dante's Virgil, he guides us through a mosaic of experiences to depict the vast architecture of erotic desire and communion. The sexual bond, with its potential for the breakdown of all spiritual and physical boundaries between two formerly separate beings, becomes the site of almost unbearable psychological and erotic tension that runs throughout the etire collection. The Red Leaves of Nightfinds its breathtaking power in a recognition of the necessary impermanence of such communion, and gives voice to that most courageous of modern menone who grasps the dangers of ecstasy yet cannot turn away.

87. John Sykes Interview - July 99

My interview with John Sykes was more of a chat session! It was pretty laid back and I have basically run through his career, of which I am a big fan.
There is a few interesting moments, especially when David Coverdale is discussed.
Before you get into it a few updates from a brief chat with John last week.
The album will indeed still have some elements of hip-hop, but not on every track and it will not be a George Lynch. I told John about that album and that is not what he is doing. It will mix elements of the classic Sykes sound with the new.
Also out is the chance of doing any work with David Lee Roth (discussed below). John Kalodner was putting something together but is now unwilling to involve David further after the two met just a couple of weeks ago.
That's about the update, besides the new album will be out in September-(ish) - now enjoy the interview!
John! So how's things?
Good, going very well
Excellent. You've got a new record just about in the can? Well I'm working on it, I'm about two thirds of the way through it currently. You know just trying to get it polished and hopefully it'll be out by the end of summer.

88. John McEuen On The Road
david Gans article about meeting the artist in Oakland, California in 1986. Details the grind of touring including separation from family.
http://www.levity.com/gans/McEuen.8601.html
Partners, Brothers, Friends and Parents
A Musician Wrestles with Road Realities
by David Gans January 1986 John McEuen, the good-natured multi-stringsman of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, was in the bar of the Oakland Holiday Inn a few minutes before last call, chatting with a couple of visitors. He mentioned being hungry, and when a man that thin says he wants to eat he ought to be allowed to eat. The options were slim. McEuen chose Denny's over Jack in the Box, since the latter would have neither bran muffins nor raisin bran. McEuen excused himself to stash his banjo and garment bag in his room. Some minutes later, the bar closed and we moved to the lobby. McEuen arrived after another moderately lengthy interval, decidedly less talkative and looking considerably more tired than he had a few minutes before. We headed for Denny's, three uneasy people trying to make small talk and killing time with largely unsuccessful jokes about the menu. Half an hour later, still not served and still not served and still not served though our menus had been folded in front of us for some time the hostess seated another party at the table next to ours and turned away from us without so much as a "be right with you." We left. Jack in the Box still not a valid option, McEuen suggested a 24-hour market we'd passed on the way. At least they'd have fruit juice and cereal. He picked up a few things and we headed back to the Holiday Inn, somewhat more relaxed by our shared ordeal.

Maps of Minnesota: Stalking John Sladek
Another Dave Langford article, on editing that John Sladek collection for Big Engine How very little does the amateur, dwelling in home at ease, comprehend the labours and perils of the author, and, when he smilingly skims the surface of a work of fiction, how little does he consider the hours of toil, consultation of authorities, researches in the Bodleian, correspondence with learned and illegible Germans in one word, the vast scaffolding that was first built up and then knocked down, to while away an hour for him in a railway train! (Robert Louis Stevenson and Lloyd Osbourne, The Wrong Box Quite so. I had no intention at all of plunging into the mighty research effort of assembling a book of someone else's fiction, but somehow one thing led to another. It was a terrible shock when that fine writer John Sladek died in March 2000, aged only 62. He'd been keeping his illness (idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis) secret from all but his family and closest friends. As Tom Disch put it, "he just sighed away his life", a few days after being told he had no chance of being listed for a lung transplant. Here's part of what I wrote in my next Interzone column: From his hilarious 1968 debut novel The Reproductive System (US Mechasm ) to the much darker comedy of Bugs in 1989, he exploited sf themes of robots and consciousness to mirror human folly with devastating wit. "Literary" influences like William Gaddis and Joseph Heller were absorbed into the Sladekian narrative madness, replete with wordplay, anagrams, palindromes, ciphers, obsessive narrative patterns and mathematical games. He skewered irrational beliefs and pseudoscience in his nonfictional

Young 'The Human Limits of Nature' 'The Limits of Human Nature' was the title of the London Institute of Contemporary Arts winter lecture series for 1971-72. I was flattered to be among a distinguished group of contributors, including Alan Ryan, Arthur Koestler, David Bohm, Raymond Williams and John Maynard Smith. As my title implies, I did not agree with the terms of reference of the series, and my contribution was published in a separate section entitled 'Criticism'. 'Critique' would have been more accurate, since I was challenging the terms of reference of the series, as I spell out in my essay. This approach has been followed through in all my subsequent writings. It was published in J. Benthall, ed., The Limits of Human Nature (Allen Lane, 1973), pp. 235-74. Download View Online
