42. Blessed Robert Southwell
robert southwell loved to write. He saw God in the world around him. He is asource of inspiration for all people. Prayer to Blessed robert southwell.
http://www.angelfire.com/ar/tjhsaints/rs.html
Born Died Do you like poetry? Is writing something you enjoy? Here is a saint for you! Robert Southwell loved to write. He saw God in the world around him. His writings were a reflection of all that is true and beautiful. The simplicity of Robert`s writing gives it a clearer picture of his soul than do the most detailed accounts for his life, because he put everything inside him into his writings. He was born in England around A.D. 1561. He went to school in France where he realized his calling. He wanted to convert people with his writings. At seventeen he applied to become a Jesuit priest. They refused his first request because of his age. His first recorded writings showed his disappointment; "...Alas, where am I, and where shall I be? A wanderer in a dry parched land." Soon, however, he was accepted into the Jesuit novitate in Rome, and two years later he began his English mission. In the time of the "Protestant Reformation," the King of England had made himself the head of the Church. Life was tough for priests. Their lives often ended on heroic martyrdom. This didn`t stop Southwell. The devotion he had to the Catholic Church made him a dangerous man in the eyes of the English monarchy. In 1592, after six years of active missionary work in England, Robert was arrested by order of the King. He was imprisoned in the Tower of London until he was hung at Tyburn on February 21, 1595. He was a martyr at the age of thirty-four. While he was in prison in the Tower of London, he continued his work. He developed his writing skill to the best of his ability. He wrote many books on the Church, God, and nature while he was there. He had the greatest love of God that remained strong even in the hardest conditions. He is a source of inspiration for all people.

Hans mest berømte skrifter inkluderer An Epistle of Comfort , som var brev adressert til Philip Howard, An Humble Supplication to Her Majestie , en avsløring av Babington-komplottet, Mary Magdalen's Funeral Tears A short Rule of Good Life (publisert posthumt i 1598) og A Fourefold Meditation (1606). Hans best kjente dikt er

As I in hoary winter night stood shivering in the snow,
Surprised was I with sudden heat which made my heart to glow;
And lifting up a fearful eye to view what fire was near,
A pretty babe all burning bright did in the air appear;
Who scorch-ed with excessive heat, such floods of tears did shed
As though His floods should quench His flames with which His tears were fed:
"Alas!" quoth He, "but newly born in fiery heats I fry,
Yet none approach to warm their hearts or feel my fire but I!"
"My faultless breast the furnace is; the fuel, wounding thorns; Love is the fire, and sighs the smoke; the ashes, shames and scorns; The fuel Justice layeth on, and Mercy blows the coals, The metal in this furnace wrought are men's defiled souls: For which, as now on fire I am to work them to their good, So will I melt into a bath, to wash them in my blood." With this He vanished out of sight and swiftly sank away, And straight I call-ed unto mind that it was Christmas Day.

Robert Southwell and The Burning Babe
Robert Southwell was born in Norfolk, England in 1561. He was part of a Catholic family. In 1576 he left England to receive a Catholic education abroad. Southwell attended the Jesuit college in Paris and in 1584 was ordained a priest. After traveling around Europe, Southwell returned to England. Many Catholics were leaving the country because of persecution by the Church of England. Southwell became known as a recusant. Recusants were those who resisted the Anglican Church. Southwell also began writing with the intent of turning English poetry from the profane to the virtuous. By doing these things, he became an enemy of the throne. When back in England, Southwell became the unofficial leader of the Catholic Church. For years, he hid missionaries and led services. In 1591 Southwell wrote An Humble Supplication to Her Majesty expressing his disagreement with the Church of England. A year later, he was imprisoned. In 1595, at the age of 33, Southwell was hanged for treason. Before his imprisonment, Southwell wrote many religious poems. Among these was

Times go by Turns

THE lopped tree in time may grow again,
Most naked plants renew both fruit and flower;
The sorest wight may find release of pain,
The driest soil suck in some moist'ning shower;
Times go by turns and chances change by course,
From foul to fair, from better hap to worse. The sea of Fortune doth not ever flow, She draws her favours to the lowest ebb; Her tides hath equal times to come and go, Her loom doth weave the fine and coarsest web; No joy so great but runneth to an end, No hap so hard but may in fine amend. Not always fall of leaf nor ever spring, No endless night yet not eternal day; The saddest birds a season find to sing, The roughest storm a calm may soon allay: Thus with succeeding turns God tempereth all, That man may hope to rise, yet fear to fall. A chance may win that by mischance was lost; The net that holds no great, takes little fish;

New Prince, New Pomp

Behold a silly tender Babe, in freezing winter night;
In homely manger trembling lies, alas a piteous sight:
The inns are full, no man will yield this little Pilgrim bed,
But forced He is with silly beasts, in crib to shroud His head. Despise Him not for lying there, first what He is enquire: An orient pearl is often found, in depth of dirty mire; Weigh not His crib, His wooden dish, nor beasts that by Him feed: Weigh not His mother's poor attire, nor Joseph's simple weed. This stable is a Prince's court, the crib His chair of state:
