Gary Soto Gary Soto A Mexican-American voice that speaks for all INTERVIEW BY ETTA WILSON Great stories are about the human situation first and any particular ethnic group second. The story collections and picture books created by Gary Soto are clearly set in Mexican-American communities, yet their universal themes speak to every adolescent. Soto, a Chicano ("That's what I am"), is quick to say that he feels a certain obligation to that ethnic group, but he's no cheerleader. Born and raised in Fresno, California, Soto decided while in college that he would be a poet. He began writing poetry for adults and received much recognition for his work. In 1990, his first two books for juveniles, one of poetry and one of short stories, were published to wide acclaim, with Baseball in April and Other Stories, named as an ALA Best Book for Young Adults. Now 45, Soto's stream of creativity is still flourishing as he continues to write novels, plays, essays, and poetry for adults and young readers.

Gary Soto
Prepared by Sherry Strunk Author's History Gary Soto was born April 12, 1952, in Fresno, California to MexicanAmerican parents. His grandparents immigrated from Mexico during the Great Depression and found jobs as farm laborers. Soto grew up poor in the San Joaquin Valley and learned a hard work ethic through chores, such as moving lawns, picking grapes, painting house numbers on street curbs, and washing cars. When Gary was five his father died as the result of a factory accident. His mother was left to raise her three children Gary, his older brother, Rick, and his younger sister, Debra with the help of the children's grandparents. Soto describes his family as an "illiterate" family. They did not have books and were not encouraged to read. In fact, Gary did not start writing poetry until he was in college. He also is an author of fiction, nonfiction, and picture books. Soto earned an English degree at California State University at Fresno in 1974. He continued his education to earn a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing at the University of California at Irvine. While working on his graduate work, Soto married Carolyn Oda, the daughter of JapaneseAmerican farmers. After receiving his master's degree, Soto became writerinresidence at San Diego State University and a lecturer in Chicano studies at the University of California, Berkeley. In 1977, he became an associate professor in both the Chicano studies and English departments at UC, Berkeley, where he has been a senior lecturer since 1992.

Gary Soto Gary Soto writes about the lives of Mexican Americans, about nature, and about personal dreams. He grew up in a Mexican-American community in Fresno, California, where at various times in his childhood he wanted to be a priest, a hobo, and a paleontologist. In college Soto planned to study geography, but then he discovered poetry. "I don't think I had any literary aspirations when I was a kid," he says. "We didn't have books, and no one encouraged us to read. So my wanting to write poetry was a sort of fluke." As a result of that "fluke," Soto has been writing poetry, novels, and short stories for young readers and adults ever since college. At the age of 25 he published a poetry collection, , that won the 1976 United States Award of the International Poetry Forum. A collection of his autobiographical pieces, Living up the Street , won the American Book Award of the Before Columbus Foundation. His young-adult novels include Taking Sides Pacific Crossing , and The Skirt Soto lives with his wife and daughter in Berkeley, California, where he occasionally teaches English and Chicano studies at the University of California.

"How Things Work"
Today it’s going to cost us twenty dollars
To live. Five for softball. Four for a book.
A handful of ones for coffee and two sweet rolls,
Bus fare, rosin for your mother’s violin.
We’re completing our task. The tip I left
For the waitress filters down
Like rain, wetting the new roots of a child
Perhaps, a belligerent cat that won’t let go
Of a balled sock until there’s chicken to eat. As far as I can tell, daughter, it works like this: You buy bread from a grocery, a bag of apples From a fruit stand, and what coins Are passed on helps others buy pencils, glue, Tickets to a movie in which laughter Is thrown into their faces. If we buy a goldfish, someone tries on a hat. If we buy crayons, someone walks home with a broom. A tip, a small purchase here and there. And things just keep going. I guess. Gary Soto was born 1952 and he wrote this in 1985. Soto is Hispanic and also writes poetry, novels and short stories for kids; but, this is one of his adult works.

Gary Soto reminds me of Mark Twain who also used his own boyhood experiences on which to base his many books and characters. The Central Valley of California is central to the action in many of Soto's books. The streets and neighborhoods of Fresno, California, are an integral part of his writing. He has said, "For me streets have always mattered. I conjure up inside my head an image of our old street in south Fresno." The area where he grew up was much like the barrios he writes about complete with junkyards and big factories all around. In his biographical essays for younger readers, such as

SOTO, GARY
April 12, 1952-
Author Biographical Statement: 1996 Biography from Seventh Book of Junior Authors and Illustrators 1999 update Gary Soto is a poet, essayist, fiction writer, and film producer. He was born in Fresno, California, the son of Mexican-American parents. His whole family worked as farm laborers around Fresno, or took such jobs as working in the packing houses of raisin companies. Soon after a move to a new house when he was five, Soto's father died in a factory accident at the age of twenty-seven. Soto and his brother and sister were raised by his mother and grandparents. The neighborhood they lived in was an urban Latino one. Soto did not have books at home, and he was not much interested in schoolwork. He graduated from high school in 1970, and, faced with the prospect of making $1.65 per hour, he applied to Fresno City College, where he began to study geography. He received an A.A. degree from the institution in 1972. While in school, he encountered a poem that had a great effect upon him: "Unwanted," by Edward Field. The poem made clear to him that alienation was not unique to himself but was common to humanity. He also realized that he wanted to express himself as a writer. He read a collection of poems called The New American Poetry, edited by Donald Allen. The book influenced him to begin writing his own poetry, and besides Edward Field, he admired the poets Gregory Corso, Kenneth Koch, Theodore Roethke, and Gabriel Garcia Marquez. He attended California State University in Fresno, where he studied with the poet Philip Levine. He earned his B.A. degree in English, magna cum laude, from the University in 1974. He was married in 1975.

Soto's clear, finely honed poet's voice shines in this tale of barrio life in Fresno, California. Nineteen-year-old Eddie has dropped out of junior college and is attempting to support himself through the occasional gardening job and painting curbside numbers in the wealthier parts of town. However, he's relentlessly followed by the unbearable heat of the Central Valley summer and a wholly believable run of bad luck: his cousin is killed, his employer's truck is stolen, and his buddy is stabbed right in front of him. On top of that, his aunt urges him to avenge his cousin's murder. The broad and easy humor of Crazy Weekend (1994) is lacking here, but Eddie's wry observations in the face of his many predicaments provide welcome relief. Although the coach at the neighborhood playground offers Eddie material assistance and moral support, there is no upbeat ending. The "buried onions," which Eddie imagines as the underground source for the world's tears, pervade the tone and plot, but the unvarnished depiction of depressed and depressing barrio life is as important as the positive images of Latinos Soto has created in his other works. Gary Soto
Soto lives with his wife and daughter in Berkeley, California. Gary Soto's favorite food is frijoles (beans). Here's a recipe for your family to try! Frijoles
  • 2 1/3 cups dried black beans 1 large onion 1 large green bell pepper 2 tablespoons cider vinegar 2 or 3 bay leaves 1 tsp. salt
Rinse beans. In a 4-quart heavy saucepan, cover beans with cold water and soak for one day. Bring soaked beans to a boil in water, adding more water, if necessary, to cover beans by about 1 1/2 inches. Simmer beans, partly covered, over low heat for 1 hour, or until beans just start getting tender but are not falling apart. Chop onion and bell pepper and stir into beans along with vinegar, bay leaves, and salt. Simmer beans, partly covered, for 2 to 3 hours, until they are very tender. Remove bay leaves. You can eat the beans hot, but they're even better if you let them cool and then refrigerate them for a day or so before eating.
