Alexander Solzhenitsyn (1918-alive)
Solzhenitsyn had long resigned himself to the terrible injustice that he would never see a word he had written in print. By 1961, after 14 years of writing, the secrecy and the faint hope were wearing him out. He never went to bed without hiding his writings. He rehearsed what he would say if the KGB came storming into his hovel during the night. At that time he was writing what would eventually be called One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich , an artistic novella but also a scathing indictment of the Soviet slave labor camps. Then one day he read Premier Khrushchev's speech at the 22nd Congress of Soviets. Solzhenitsyn was stunned. Khrushchev openly condemned Stalin, the evil dictator who had died in 1953! Was the Soviet Union ready for an honest book about the slave labor camps? Or would such an honest book get its author thrown right back into those very labor camps?
Solzhenitsyn decided he must take the chance.
In November 1961 he took his manuscript to a literary friend in Moscow. Not one diehard Communist in 1000 would approve publication of such a book. Yet over the next months the manuscript was guided upward by helpful hands, always avoiding the thousand hands with the knives, through layer after layer of bureaucracy - yes, all the way up to Premier Khrushchev himself. And he approved its publication! To Solzhenitsyn it was a miracle perhaps even greater than his cure from cancer in 1954.
Words that Solzhenitsyn's editor had screamed upon the publication of

"Alexander Solzhenitsyn: A Century in his Life" By D. M. Thomas St. Martin's Press (C) 1998 D. M. Thomas ISBN: 0-312-18036-5 In telling the story of one of Russia's greatest writers Alexander Solzhenitsyn D.M. Thomas has written a history of Russia as well. In his books Solzhenitsyn lay bare the details of the Stalinist labor camps that killed millions. He won the 1970 Nobel Prize, but was forced into exile in 1974. CHAPTER ONE ANCESTRAL VOICES I saw it fifty years ago Before the thunderbolt had riven it, Green leaves, ripe leaves, leaves thick as butter, Fat, greasy life.... W. B. YEATS, Purgatory HAPPY IS THE WRITER WHO REMEMBERS DRAWING IN THE DEVOTED love of a woman and, through her, the riches of his native traditions. For Pushkin, at the start of the nineteenth century, that woman was his nurse, Arina Rodionovna, whose simple peasant love consoled him for the coldness of his mother. The fairy tales and folk stories she told him in Russian broke through the genteel French of polite society. He paid tribute to her in a tender poem that imagines her sighing like a sentry on guard, at an upstairs window, her gnarled hands knitting more slowly now, as she gazes at the forgotten gate, the distant blackened road; he is late, and she fearfully imagines ... The lyrical fragment breaks off at that point. But their two imaginings have touched for a moment again in his adulthood and his adulteries.

Author and Soviet dissident Alexander Solzhenitsyn was born into a Cossack family of intellectuals on December 11, 1918. He attended the University of Rostov-na-Don, graduating with honor in mathematics and physics, and took correspondence courses in literature from Moscow State University. He fought in World War II, attaining the rank of captain of artillery, but was arrested in February 1945, after a letter he had written to a friend that was critical of Stalin fell into the hands of the KGB. Branded an "enemy of the people," he was sentenced to eight years of imprisonment, followed by internal exile. He was taken first to the notorious KGB Lubyanka prison in Moscow, then to Marfino, a research institute where imprisoned intellectuals were forced to work for the state, and finally to a hard-labor camp. Discharged in 1953, he was exiled to the remote town of Berlik. While there he developed internal cancer and almost died. All of these experiences provided material for his subsequent books. In 1956, after Stalin had been dead for three years, Solzhenitsyn was rehabilitated and allowed to settle in Ryazan in central Russia, where he became a mathematics instructor and began to write. In 1961 he submitted his first manuscript, "One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich," to the authorities in hopes of being allowed to publish it. The novel, based on his own experiences, detailed the daily life of a prisoner in the forced hard-labor camps under Stalin. Khrushchev, in the midst of his "de-Stalinization" campaign, allowed the book to be published in 1963. Its description of life in the camps was the first of its kind, and its straightforward language and content spoke strongly to ordinary citizens and intellectuals alike. It produced a sensation both inside and outside the Soviet Union.

http://www.geocities.com/psbabusyed/cancer.html
Alexander Solzhenitsyn was born in Kislovodsk, Soviet Union in 1918. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1970. While serving in the Soviet army, Solzhenitsyn was imprisoned and later exiled to Central Russia. His prison experiences were documented in his first work of fiction, One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich. Solhenitsyn's other novels include The First Circle, Cancer Ward and August 1914. He also wrote an autobiography, The Oak and the Calf. The conversation between the cancer patient, Oleg and the lady doctor Zoya in which they discuss, among other things, the Indian film Awara (The Tramp), is from Alexander Solzhenitsyn's Cancer Ward. …she was excited by his steady, absorbing admiration. It was something she'd never encountered among the young men from the town who cuddled their girls so casually every Saturday night at the dance. Suddenly she flung out her arms, snapped the fingers of both hands, her whole body writhing to the urge of the popular song she began singing from a recent Indian film.

His childhood was inevitably marked by the political upheavals of the time. Even during high school, Solzhenitsyn planned on writing an epic novel about the Revolution. But ironically, it was his imprisonment that became the inspiration for his novel about a day in the life of an uneducated peasant serving in a labor camp. Solzhenitsyn, in many ways, based the experiences of his protagonist, Ivan Denisovich, on his own prison experiences. Like Ivan Denisovich, Solzhenitsyn was also a bricklayer in the labor camps. In 1956, after Khruschev's denunciation speeches against Stalin, Alexander Solzhenitsyn's sentence was finally annulled. With his newfound freedom, Solzhenitsyn faced a different world than he previously knewhis wife had remarried while he was in prisonand the Soviet Union was undergoing political transition. In 1959, he composed
