L. Neil Smith's Ahistorical Comparison Of Lincoln To Lenin

Last updated 10/10/02. [Editor's note: Libertarianism, like many other ideologies, spawns substantial revisionist histories. These are used to help separate the elect, who know the "truth", from the masses, and thus destroy the common ground needed for communication that might lead to leaving the ideology. L. Neil Smith is one of the more extreme libertarian propagandists, who generally measures all freedom by in terms of guns. This is a criticism of one of his "Lever Action Essays", An American Lenin . It was originally presented at . Reprinted with permission of the author.] I read the article. Mr. Smith makes an emotionally compelling argument against Lincoln, but his conclusions are based more on assertions, exaggerations and provocative metaphors, than facts. Here are a few examples of this... 1. He implies that the Founding Fathers were libertarians, yet provides no substantiation for this. As one who has extensively studied the American Founders, I would strongly disagree with categorizing them as libertarian. Would Mr. Smith honestly call Alexander Hamilton a "libertarian"?!! Or George Washington? Even Thomas Jefferson, who took what could be described as "libertarian" positions during Washington's and Adams's administrations, drifted more to the middle during his own presidency. Recall the Embargo Act and the Louisiana Purchase as but two examples of federal initiatives that true libertarians would decry as blatantly unconstitutional. And what about Noah Webster and Benjamin Rush who together were probably the two most influential Founders in launching America's public schools. Sorry. On this point, Mr. Smith is definitely wrong. The Founders were not libertarian.

L. Neil Smith
NRA Life Member. Smith is the author of many science fiction novels. In responding to a charge of racism, he posted a nice summary of his ouvre to Libernet, excerpted below. The hero of my first novel, The Probability Broach , and my second, The Venus Belt , is a full-blooded Ute Indian whose wife is a freckled strawberry blonde and whose best friend is the 137-year-old Mexican widow of a Russian prince. These are the books that also introduced sapient chimpanzees, gorillas, porpoises and killer whales to science fiction, all inhabitants of the "North American Confederacy", an amalgamation of the United States, Mexico , and Canada The brave protagonist of my third novel, Their Majesties' Bucketeers , is a meter-high, hairy, nine-legged, crab-like firefighting detective whose species has three genders. The viewpoint character of my fourth novel, The Nagasaki Vector , is Jewish, although he doesn't keep kosher as far as I know (I never asked him) and he speaks with a decidedly West Texican accent. He's followed constantly by three tiny aliens who think he's God, and his flying saucer has fallen in love with him. YD-038, the hero of my fifth novel

L. Neil Smith is a writer of pro-liberty and pro-gun essays and novels, and he's damn good at it. Why? He is uncompromising and an idealist. My kinda guy. He's better known for his science fiction novels. They are, of course, philosophically libertarian. He uses his novels to argue his point libertarian societies are better. He does so without preaching or letting the message overpower the story as my all-time favorite Robert Heinlein was apt to do in his later years. Neil is as good a novelist as he is an essayist. My favorite book by Neil is The Nagasaki Vector , with The Probability Broach a close second. Humor, action, and guns. What more can you ask for? Many of Neil's books are out of print but can be found in the used book shops. They're worth the hunt. Most of his essays are available on-line at the links below. These links probably provide access to most of Neil's non-fiction work. Enjoy.

Greetings all and welcome to my completely unauthorized "Talk about L. Neil Smith" discussion forum. This is the place for fans (and even critics) of Smith's novels, essays, politics, and other activities to share their thoughts and knowledge.
In this forum, you won't get run off for asking what the "L." in Smith's name stands for. Personally, I'd like to know now you pronounce the "§" in "§-field"!
But I hope that people will sound off on a wider range of topics, so long as they relate to LNS. I will moderate this list only to excise libelous statements or gross stupidity (which in Smith's case is redundant he's supposed to be an excellent shot).
Who am I to be doing this? Just a long-time libertarian and sci-fi enthusiast who only fairly recently discovered the treasure trove of Smith's works. My first exposure to Smith was the short story published in the comic-book anthology "Open Space," when it was published in the early 90s. Later I re-discovered Smith through his Webley page, and started reading his books: Bretta Martyn, The Probability Broach, Tom Paine Maru, The Crystal Empire, Pallas, The War Dove, The Venus Belt, Their Majesties' Bucketeers, and The Gallatin Divergance (so far, in the order which I read them).

MURDER BY GUN CONTROL
By L. Neil Smith
Why is everybody being so damned polite?
No sane individual living in the last days of the 20th century would knowingly welcome Nazis, the KGB, the Khmer Rouge, the ATF, or the FBI into their homes. We've learned too much from what happened to Jews in Germany, Kulaks in Russia, "landlords" in China, everybody in Cambodia, and victims of state terrorism at Ruby Ridge and Waco.
But let the Jackbooted Thugs' Ladies' Auxiliary slap on makeup and broomstick skirts, let them prattle in squeaky little girl voices and breathe their vegetarian breath all over us, and for some reason we think we have to ask them in and offer them chamomile tea.
Well, to hell with that. I used to give a lecture at the local university that began like this: "Until this morning you could plead ignorance for positions you take or fail to take on the moral and political issues of the day. When you leave this classroom an hour from now, having heard the facts I'm about to present, it'll either be as a brand new libertarian, or as a fully self-aware fascist monster."
Today I say the same to politicians, bureaucrats, cops, Handgun Control, Inc., Colorado Governor Bill Owens, and those so miserably lacking in originality that they had to plagiarize Louis Farrakan (of all people) and launch a "Million Moms March". Also, anybody else who thinks it's morally acceptable to use the hired guns of government to take everybody else's guns away.

When They Came for the Smokers ...
    by L. Neil Smith
A friend of mine calls himself a "political smoker". He doesn't smoke. He never has. But told some time ago at a Los Angeles supper club that he and other members would henceforward be forbidden to smoke, his immediate reaction was to borrow a cigarette from somebody sitting nearby, stand, and light it up in protest. As he sees it, his interests, in terms of his individual and civil rights, run parallel with those of smokers who are being increasingly stripped of theirs. I am a former smoker. I quit cold more than a year ago, after suffering a heart attack. Even before that, I never claimed that smoking is good for anybody, just that I had always enjoyed doing it—and that a great many lies were being told about it by individuals and groups who had gone beyond non-smoking to become anti- smokers. But I, too, remain a political smoker. Exactly like many another do-gooder-targetted group, smokers today are well along in the process of losing their human rights—and more and more, it seems, their very humanity—to social parasites who, as H.L. Mencken is reputed to have put it long ago, awaken in the middle of the night, sweat- drenched and trembling with the morbid fear that somewhere, someone might be happy. Until now, there hasn't been an effective way to crush these lice on the American body politic—and their bloodsucking symbionts in media and government—between the thumb of the Ninth Amendment and the forefinger of the First.

Shortages of almost everything, the bizarre crimes that spawned, plus growing government control made a cop's job hard and dirty in 1987. But Lieutenant Win Bear of the Denver Police Department kept at it...there wasn't anything else he really knew how to do. Then his best friend was murdered, and for some reason secret police agents were out to get him as well! A shoot out in a secret lab triggered an explosion...and when the dust cleared, Win Bear wasn't in the U.S. of A. anymore. At least he didn't think he was. Rick's Reply to L. Neil Smith
After receiving Neil's endorsement, Rick sent the following thank you note. Thank you so much, L. Neil Smith. Your endorsement is a very great honor, based upon your own battle against a government that refuses to defend the Bill of Rights which each member of that government has sworn an oath to uphold. Your campaign to ensure that government honors that oath to defend the Constitution is absolutely inspiring. While in Austin, Texas, on March 23, 2002, I had the honor of being the featured guest speaker at one of the many Bill of Rights rallies across America, and after my too-long speech of 45 minutes, I was given a Bill of Rights pin from one of your supporters. I wore it the rest of the day, and it gave me great satisfaction when he told me it was from you. I am absolutely honored that you have taken notice of my campaign for the U.S. Senate from Colorado, the Bill of Rights rallies across America campaign, and the Million Gun March petition campaign. Each of these campaigns can have an effect to change the U.S. government and its UNCONSTITUTIONAL ways. I hope that your endorsement will mobilize Libertarians across the country to join our combined efforts to secure our birthright of liberty. This birthright was handed down to us by the founding fathers, but an ungrateful America does not understand the continued sacrifices that must be made by every generation of Americans to secure that guarantee of freedom.
