Unnumbered Reviews #3: Clark Ashton Smith
The Big Three fantasists in the 1930s were H.P. Lovecraft, Robert E. Howard, and Clark Ashton Smith. Smith was probably the best wordsmith of the three, but he wasn't driven the way Lovecraft and Howard were. His stories (overall rating of ** for story and ****- for style on an uncalibrated four-point scale) are the hardest of the three to characterize. The settings had a lot in common with Howard's (he was placing stories in Hyperborea before Howard was placing stories in the Hyborean Age), but his characters were a lot less heroic often being the sorts of wizards, thieves, and despots that Conan would have for lunch. The creatures his characters tended to encounter had a lot in common with Lovecraft's, but Smith was far less interested in milking a story for its horror. Where Lovecraft's characters would gaze into cosmic madness and shudder, Smith's would prosaically get eaten. But every bite would be a pleasure to read. Clark Ashton Smith was a poet, and it showed in the care with which he constructed his prose, as well. The language was carefully chosen for its sound, its cadence, and the images it was meant to convey. (I imagine this was a disadvantage in a market that was paying about a penny a word.)

The Star-Treader and Other Poems , and had published his strongest collection, The House of Orchids and Other Poems , which delighted Ambrose Bierce, who sadly just missed meeting Smith face-to-face. Sterling introduced Smith to the poetry of Baudelaire at the age of 19, and the San Francisco press 'discover' him as "Boy Poet ... Poetic genius ... Ranking with th Best of Keats and Byron ... New Shelley" and the like. Over three years, he sells more than 1,000 copies of his first book of poems (relatively speaking, a best-seller). From ages 20-28 he suffers poor health, including a nervous breakdown. Bierce dies, too soon to have granted Smith the international attention he intended to provide. His grotesque paintings and drawings are exhibited in New York and on the West Coast, but he gives away far more than he sells. At the age of 27, in just ten days, he writes his greatest long poem, The Hashish-eater; or The Apocalypse of Evil

To me as to a curious god. The Star-Treader Clark Ashton Smith. Clark Ashton Smith (1893-1961) is best known for his prose poetry and horror/fantasy fiction, and often considered as influential as 'Cthulhu Mythos' architect H.P. Lovecraft and 'Conan' creator Robert E. Howard. Smith's writings were published in over fifty magazines including 'Weird Tales', 'Amazing Stories' and 'Wonder Stories'. Self-taught, Smith also experimented with paintings, drawings, and stone sculptures, which were the focus of his creative impulse from the late 1930s until his death. Although Smith wrote many tales in the Cthulhu Mythos genre popularised by Lovecraft, he also created many memorable settings such as the medieval realms of Averoigne and Malnéant, and the dying civilization Zothique. His hyperborean tales extended the Cthulhu Mythos timescape into new environs for the Old Ones, and many of Smith's creations and genre innovations were utilised by Lovecraft himself. Another key difference to Lovecraft was that Smith's tales featured more prominent female characters. His heroes battled both Romantic and Misanthropic impulses, and were more likely to be thieves or rogue magicians than Lovecraft's cosmic-gazing intrepid adventurers. Consumed by an ever-present fear of death, Smith's characters only won their battles against stronger adversities on few occasions. They capture aspects of the human psyche not readily apparent in modern civilization. The allegation that Smith was just an imitation Lovecraft is blatently false.

The Original Text to Clark Ashton Smith's "The Maze of Maal Dweb"
    commentary by Jim Rockhill
I did not give Smith another chance until the colorful Gervasio Gallardo cover for Xiccarph
Clark Ashton Smith wrote the tale "The Maze of the Enchanter" in autumn 1932. Unable to publish it, or unwilling to submit it to the editing he knew any commercial editor would demand, he included it in the self-published pamphlet in 1933. Five years later a severely pruned version of the tale appeared in the October 1938 issue of Weird Tales as "The Maze of Maal Dweb." This later text appears in the canonical volume Lost Worlds (Arkham House, 1944), The City of the Singing Flame A Rendezvous in Averoigne (Arkham House, 1988). Aside from appearances in two volumes edited by Lin Carter for the Adult Fantasy Series the anthology The Young Magicians Xiccarph (The Strange Company, 1979), Smith's richer, original version of the tale has been supplanted by the later, simpler text. The Unexpurgated Clark Ashton Smith Strange Shadows Elsewhere the revisions do not merely dilute the atmosphere, but subtly blunt the action as well. Here is the description of Tiglari's escalade from the same point in first the original text:
