George Bush Keeps Changing His Story
    Governor Bush's Cocaine Problem
This article, first published in the summer of 2000, is not about George Bush's drug use. It is about how he dodges, ducks, and hedges when confronted with his past drug use. American citizens deserve a leader who can be frank and honest.
    by Adam J. Smith
First he refused to confirm or deny it. Later he would say only that "when I was young and irresponsible, I was young and irresponsible." Next he said that the issue wasn't relevant. Then he said that he wouldn't address "rumors." Then he said that he could pass a standard security check dating back seven years. Finally, he said that he could've passed the security check in his father's White House fifteen years. Though he had to think before specifying whether he could've passed it then or now. Now, no matter what he says, the issue seems destined to dog him until the day he comes clean. Texas Governor and Republican presidential frontrunner George W. Bush, Jr. has a cocaine problem. Under normal circumstances, an individual's past drug use, especially if that use occurred in the distant past, should not be relevant to their qualifications for present employment. But in the race for the United States Presidency, it is relevant on two counts. In fact, in Governor Bush's case, it is relevant on three.

    Adam Smith Society
The International Adam Smith Society was founded in 1995 with two aims: (i) to encourage interdisciplinary scholarly interest in Adam Smith's writings, as well as in topics and issues connected with his writings; and (ii) to provide a forum for the sharing of research and scholarship relating to Adam Smith. The Society's activities include sponsoring conference sessions in association with other learned societies and promoting communication amongst Smith scholars by providing a regular newsletter for its members. In June 2001 the society held its first international conference in conjunction with the meeting of The Eighteenth-Century Scottish Studies Society and special sessions have regularly been held at the American Philosophical Association meetings. The society is currently setting up a scholarly, peer-reviewed annual review, the Adam Smith Review. "All men, even the most stupid and unthinking, abhor fraud, perfidy, and injustice, and delight to see them punished. But few men have reflected upon the necessity of justice to the existence of society, how obvious soever that necessity may appear to be." The Theory of Moral Sentiments

Adam Smith did not mean what he is often made to say
    by Jonathan Schlefer

O NE of the most often distorted passages in economic literature is surely Adam Smith's aside about the invisible hand of the market. In Economics, which has been the leading college text on the subject since the 1950s, Paul A. Samuelson and William D. Nordhaus concocted a typical variant of Smith's actual remarks. They pulled them from the midst of a paragraph hundreds of pages into The Wealth of Nations, presumed to streamline the prose by chopping and splicing without using ellipses, and elevated the result into the theme of Smith's entire thousand-page book. Every individual endeavors to employ his capital so that its produce may be of greatest value. He generally neither intends to promote the public interest, nor knows how much he is promoting it. He intends only his own security, only his own gain. And he is in this led by an invisible hand to promote an end which was no part of his intention. By pursuing his own interest he frequently promotes that of society more effectually than when he really intends to promote it. [italics added]

An earlier French translation had been published (1764) under the title Meta physique de lame; and there is a later one—the best—by the marquis de Condorcet (1798, 2nd ed. 1830). 2 J E. Thorold Rogers published in the Academy, 28th February bishop W. Magee (I’~óó—1Sfli) for the omission in subsequent editions of a passage of the Moral Sentiments which that prelate had cited with high commendation as among the ablest illustrations of the doctrine of the atonement. Smith had omitted the paragraph in question (an omission which had escaped notice for twenty years) on the ground that it was unnecessary and misplaced; but Magee suspected him of having been influenced by deeper reasons. made his tour in i773, whilst Hume’s death did not take place till 1776. Smith seems not to have met Johnson in Scotland at all. It appears, however, from Boswell’s Life, under date of 29th April 1778, that Johnson had on one occasion quarrelled with Smith at Strahan’s house, apparently in London; it is clear that the “unlucky altercation” at Strahan’s must have occurred in 1761 or 1763, and could have had nothing to do with the ,letter on Humes death.

Human nature economic growth: The uniform, constant and uninterrupted effort of every man to better his condition, the principle from which public and national, as well as private opulence is originally derived, is frequently powerful enough to maintain the natural progress of things toward improvement, in spite both of the extravagance of government, and of the greatest errors of administration. Like the unknown principle of animal life, it frequently restores health and vigour to the constitution, in spite, not only of the disease, but of the absurd prescriptions of the doctor. One of his most remarkable inventions, patented in 1780, was the letter-copying press, for copying manuscripts by using glutinous ink and pressing the written page against a moistened sheet of thin paper. It remained the most important method of copying letters until the advent of the typewriter in the late 19th century. Adam Smith wrote to his publisher William Strahan in October 1780 "I am a subscriber for Watts copying machine. The price is six Guineas for the machine and five shillings for the packing box; I should be glad if he would send me a ream of the copying Paper, together with all the other specimens of Ink etc which commonly accompany the machine..."

    ADAM SMITH. BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH.
The fame of Adam Smith rests so deservedly on his great work, the Wealth of Nations , that the fact is apt to be lost sight of, that long before he distinguished himself as a political economist he had gained a reputation, not confined to his own country, by his speculations in moral philosophy. The Theory of Moral Sentiments was first published in 1759, when its author was thirty-six; the Wealth of Nations in 1776, when he was fifty-three. The success of the latter soon eclipsed that of his first work, but the wide celebrity which soon attended the former is attested by the fact of. the sort of competition that ensued for translating it into French. Rochefoucauld, grandson of the famous author of the Maxims Memoirs as having been impressed by Adam Smith's Theory with a great idea of its author's wisdom and depth of thought. The publication of these two books, the only writings published by their author in his lifetime, are strictly speaking the only episodes which form anything like landmarks in Adam Smith's career. The sixty-seven years of his life (1723-90) were in other respects strangely destitute of what are called "events;" and beyond the adventure of his childhood, when he was carried away by gipsies but soon rescued, nothing extraordinary ever occurred to ruffle the even surface of his existence. If, therefore, the happiness of an individual, like that of a nation, may be taken to vary inversely with the materials afforded by them to the biographer or the historian, Adam Smith may be considered to have attained no mean degree of human felicity. From his ideal of life, political ambition and greatness were altogether excluded; it was his creed that happiness was equal in every lot, and that contentment alone was necessary to ensure it. "What," he asks, "can be added to the happiness of the man who is in health, who is out of debt, and has a clear conscience?"
