Life of Mary Wollstonecraft Shelly (Biography):
Before the birth of Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley, the eight years of Franch revolution (1789-1793) was on going. In 1792, Mary Wollstonecraft 's "A Vindication of the Rights of Women" was first published. In that same year Percy Bysshe Shelley was born. A year after her book was published, William Godwin published "An Enquiry Concerning Political Justice." Mary's parents were shapers of the Romantic Era sensibility and the revolutionary ideas of the left wing. In 1794, Mary Wollstonecraft bore her first illegitimate child ,Fanny Imlay. In 1797, William Godwin and Mary Wollstonecraft gets married, and Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin was born August 30, 1797. Mary Wollstonecraft dies from an infection caused by improper postdelivery medical treatment soon after Mary Shelley's birth. Godwin taught Mary to read and spell her name by having her trace her mother's inscription on the stone. At the age of sixteen Mary ran away to live with the twenty-one year old Percy Shelley, who was already married to Harriet Westbrook. She conceived of Frankenstein during on the most famous house parties in literary history when staying at Lake Geneva in Switzerland with Byron and Shelley. She was only nineteen at the time. Her life at the time was series of calamities when she wrote this novel. The worst of these were the suicides of her half-sister, Fanny Imaly, and Shelley's wife, Harriet when she was found drowned with her unidentified lover's premature baby.

Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley (1797-1851)
M ary Wollstonecraft Shelley was the daughter of Mary Wollstonecraft and William Godwin, the wife of Percy Bysshe Shelley , and the author of one of the most widely read and often redacted novels of the past two centuries. Frankenstein; or, the Modern Prometheus was born out of a series of conversations she had during the summer of 1816 with Percy Shelley, Lord Byron, and Dr. John Polidori. Mary cites conversations between Shelley and Byron about Erasmus Darwin ("they talked about the experiments of Dr. Darwin ") and Luigi Galvani ("perhaps a corpse would be re-animated; galvanism had given token of such things") as sources for her own idea of a reanimated human ("perhaps the component parts of a creature might be manufactured, brought together, and endued with vital warmth") in her introduction to the 1831 edition of the novel (first edition 1818). When asked to explain why he has created a monstrous life form (one that would eventually destroy him), Mary's Victor Frankenstein offers an explanation based on the concept of "species." "A new species would bless me as its creator," he says to Captain Walton in the opening pages of the novel. Mary clearly sees this attempt to create life as connected to the creation of a species. Of course, Victor does not really create a new species at all; he creates a hybrid, a human being composed of the parts of other humans and other animals, since some of his raw materials come from the "slaughterhouse." Mary's creature presumably lacks a soul, at least in the minds of most of her 1818 readers. But when Victor considers the "race of demons" that might populate the world if he goes through with his plan to create a female companion for the "wretch," he clearly places

relationship blossomed quickly and on July 28 of the same year the two young lovers eloped. Their trip was through France, Switzerland, Germany, and Holland. This tour was less than pleasurable due to financial problems and the accompaniment of Claire Clairmont. After the six week tour the three returned to London. Shelley visited rarely to avoid creditors. In the following months Mary, with Shelley's approval, took on Thomas Jefferson Hogg as her lover. Hogg had been Shelley's good friend at Oxford before the two were expelled for producing a pamphlet promoting Atheism. Mary's decision to take on Hogg may have been influenced by her father's advocation of free love. Mary's first child was born in 1815 and died two weeks later due to the complications of premature birth. A year later, Mary gave birth to another boy, William. Mary's novel is a result of a ghost story telling contest she and friends had organized. Work on the novel , however, continued under the close supervision of the highly educated Percy Shelley. The novel was completed on may 14, 1817, but was not published until March 11, 1818. It was sold to a small and less than reputable firm that published it anonymously. Frankenstein was immediately successful and widely accepted. On the day of publication the Shelleys and Claire sailed for Italy, where Percy Shelley would later die. Mary went on to write for many different publications and evolved into a

Search all of Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley English Romantic novelist, biographer and editor, best known as the writer of FRANKENSTEIN, OR, THE MODERN PROMETHEUS (1818). Shelley was 21 when the book was published. The story deals with an ambitious young scientist. He creates life but then rejects his creation, a monster.
Mary Shelley was born in London. Her mother, Mary Wollstonecraft, who died in childbirth, was one of the first feminists. Her father was the writer and political journalist William Godwin, who became famous with his work An Enquiry Concerning Political Justice (1793). Godwin had revolutionary attitudes to most social institutions, including marriage. Among his other books is Things as They Are, or The Adventures of Caleb Williams (1794).
In her childhood Mary Shelley was left to educate herself amongst her father's intellectual circle. She published her first poem at the age of ten. At the age of 16 she ran away to France and Switzerland with the poet Percy Shelley. They married in 1816 after Shelley's first wife had committed suicide by drowning. Their first child, a daughter, died in Venice, Italy, a few years later. In HISTORY OF SIX WEEKS TOUR (1817) the Shelleys jointly recorded their life. Thereafter they returned to England and Mary gave birth to a son, William.
The story of Frankenstein started on summer in 1816 when Mary joined with Percy Shelley and Claire Clairmont near Geneva Lord Byron. She took a challenge set by Byron and Shelley to write the most frightening ghost story. The idea came to her in a dream.
