Writer Ntozake Shange keynotes Black Arts and Sciences Festival
Playwright, novelist and poet Ntozake Shange, author of "for colored girls who have considered suicide/when the rainbow is enuf," will speak in the Assembly Series at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 25, in Graham Chapel. A reception in Shange's honor will follow in the Women's Building formal lounge. Shange's lecture keynotes the 1995 Black Arts and Sciences Festival, which is slated for Oct. 22-28. The festival theme is "A Treasure of Black Culture: Stolen, Reclaimed, Cherished." "Everything, our culture, heritage and artistic traditions, were and continue to be stolen," said junior Carla Cartwright, co-chair of the programming committee for the University's Association of Black Students (ABS). "We are currently in the process of reclaiming all that is ours. But throughout history, even when all that we knew was taken from us, it was cherished." Shange's choreopoem "for colored girls who have considered suicide/when the rainbow is enuf," which recently was performed by the St. Louis Black Repertory Company, premiered in 1976 at the Joseph Papp Public Theater in New York. After being adapted for Broadway, it became a popular success, receiving the Critics Circle and Audelco awards and a Tony Award nomination. In addition to numerous theater pieces, Shange has written five volumes of poetry and three novels.

Ntozake Shange Ntozake Shange was born on this date in 1948. She is An African-American Playwright, Author and Educator.
Born Paulette Williams in Trenton, New Jersey to Paul T. Williams (namesake), a surgeon, and Eloise Williams, a psychiatric social worker and educator. She is the oldest of four children of an upper middle class family. In 1956 her family moved to a then, racially segregated St. Louis at the age of eight for five years where she enjoyed music, dance, art, literature, and opera; though at a German-American school she suffered blatant racism as a part of the dawn of the Brown versus Board of Education decision.
She was an avid reader of Jean Genet, Herman Melville, and Langston Hughes. She also came in contact with great musicians and singers like Dizzy Gillespie, Chuck Berry, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, and Josephine Baker, all friends of her parents. W.E.B. DuBois was also a family visitor. In 1961 she returned to New Jersey, completed high school and became increasingly aware of the inequities of the American society on Black females; five years later she enrolled at Bernard College. Soon after this She attempted suicide (more than once) after a recent separation from her law school husband and a deep sense of bitterness and alienation.
Upon gathering herself she earned a bachelor's degree with honors in American studies from Barnard College in 1970, a master's degree in American studies from the University of Southern California in 1973. In 1971 decided to take an African name: Ntozake means "she who comes with her own things, and Shange means, "who walks like a lion." This change reinforced her inner strength and to redirect her life. Shange has taught humanities, women's studies, and Afro-American studies from 1972-1975 at Sonoma State College, Mills College, and University of California Extension. During the same period, she was dancing and reciting poetry with the Third World Collective, Raymond Sawyer's Afro-American Dance Company; West Coast Dance Works; and her own company that was then called For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide.

Netfirms Web Hosting The Mick Sinclair Archive Ntozake Shange November NME book review BETSEY BROWN Ntozake Shange BETSEY BROWN is an ambitious work. Its intention is to weave the stories of several people of the same family together around a time and place crucial in shaping their ideas and destinies. The novel unfolds through the growing pains of Betsey Brown (aged 13 3/4), the eldest female child in a brood belonging to Jane and Greer and living in a big old house in St Louis, USA. The family are black and they live between (in several senses) the rundown black section of town and the affluent white neighbourhoods. They are on the right side of the tracks but are the wrong colour. The year is 1959. Greer is one of the USA's few black surgeons. He is determined to make his young family aware and proud of their Negro identity. He rouses them each morning with a conga drum strapped to his back and quizzes them on "what is the most standard form of the blues? Who is President of Ghana? A Negro's got to know."

October 6-9, 1986 Ntozake Shange Of Shange's most recent novel, Betsy Brown , writer lsmael Reed has said, "No contemporary writer has Ms. Shange's uncanny gift for immersing herself within the situations of so many different types of women. No wonder she has achieved almost oracular status among her female readers. She is a writer of many masks. She can serenade you and she can cut you; she can chirp as well as growl; she can delight as well as antagonize. With Betsy Brown the masks come off." Ntozake Shange has published several books of poetry, plays, and fiction. She has won two Obie Awards (for for colored girls who have considered suicide when the rainbow is enuf and Mother Courage ) and the Los Angeles Times Book Prize for her collection Three Pieces . Shange is currently at work on a book documenting five generations of post-Katherine Dunhan Afro-American choreography to be titled Dance We Do Ms. Shange will speak on playwriting on Thursday afternoon at 12:30. She will read on Thursday night at 8 p.m. Her appearance is sponsored by the Activities Programming Board, Old Dominion University. [extracted from 1986 brochure]

In a recent workshop, poet Thomas Lux told his students that in today's poetry market, if you use the lowercase i it will automatically brand you an amateur. In the same class, he also noted that if you are going to break grammatical rules, you should at least do so consistently.
Personally, I have always had a difficult time reading poetry that breaks rules of proper grammer. That is, until I read nappy edges , by Ntozake Shange.
Shange's poetry collection abandons grammatical rules, with lines sprawling across the page, or clipped to single words, scant use of capitalization, and sporadic use of punctuation. These poetic devices, as well as her liberal use of shorthand in writing words like yr (for your ) and wd (for

Ntozake Shange's highly acclaimed plays, poetry, and fiction have established her as a major figure in contemporary American literature. Her latest novel, Liliane: Resurrection of the Daughter, stems partly from her own segregated childhood in St. Louis, partly from the double-edged realization that, in her words, "we knew we came from something, somewhere, and had watched as 'The Other' removed us from ourselves, our lands, our language, and each other, at will or on a whim. Nevertheless . . . the intermingling of people of color on these shores revitalized an African-American community that was numbed by the violence of the sheer task of living here." top of the page
Liliane tells the story of a young black woman who is defined by her own creative impulses. Liliane exposes most of what she knows of herself through her works of art. What she does not know that which is buried, the riches of the unconscious surfaces during her psychoanalysis, Liliane's story, however, does not unfold only from her own recollections. The many voices of her childhood friends and lovers combine to complete a portrait of this remarkable artist.
By interweaving the voices of Liliane and her analyst with monologues from the friends and lovers who have formed the geography of her experience, the events of a young girl's life become the landscape of her future. This guide is designed to help you navigate that landscape and to piece together the brilliant and courageous story of
