61. Shakespeare And The Globe: Then And Now
A brief biography.
http://search.eb.com/shakespeare/micro/160/59.html
Davenant, Sir William,
Davenant also spelled D'AVENANT (b. 1606, Oxford, Eng.d. April 7, 1668, London), English poet, playwright, and theatre manager who was made poet laureate on the strength of such successes as The Witts (licensed 1634), a comedy; the masques The Temple of Love, Britannia Triumphans, and Luminalia; and a volume of poems, Madagascar (published 1638). Shakespeare was apparently Davenant's godfather, and gossip held that the famous playwright may even have been his father. Davenant became a page in London in 1622 and later served a famous literary courtier, Fulke Greville, Lord Brooke. Meanwhile he was writing his early revenge tragedies, such as Albovine (produced c. 1629), and tragicomedies, such as The Colonel. After he had served in continental wars, his engaging, reckless personality and his plays and occasional verses attracted the patronage of Queen Henrietta Maria. Davenant was appointed to the poet laureateship in 1638, after the death of Ben Jonson the previous year. In 1641 Davenant risked his life in a bungled army plot, and the outbreak of the Civil War in 1642 nullified a royal patent he had secured to build a theatre. A supporter of King Charles I during the Civil War, he was knighted by the king in 1643 for running supplies across the English Channel. Later, having joined the defeated and exiled Stuart court in Paris, he began his uncompleted verse epic Gondi bert (1651), a tale of chivalry in 1,700 quatrains. After the execution of Charles I, his queen sent Davenant to aid the Royalist cause in America as lieutenant governor of Maryland. Davenant's ship was captured in the English Channel, however, and he was imprisoned in the Tower of London until 1654.

These texts are the earliest appearances in print of some of Shakespeare's plays and poems. The spelling, puncuation, and other early modern printing conventions have not been normalized, a factor to be kept in mind when planning a search. Lineation for each play is "to the end," that is, running straight through from first to last line rather than restarting with each new scene. Quartos

Music to hear'st zhou music sadly?

William Lindsay Windus (1822-1907)
Windus worked in Liverpool, where he was elected a member of the Liverpool Academy in 1848. In 1850 he saw a painting by Millais at the Royal Academy in London and joined the cause of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. His first important work was Burd Helen, exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1856. The harsh criticism of John Ruskin so discouraged Windus that he stopped painting in 1859 and no longer exhibited his work. Home Page Artists Plays ... The Bard of Avon
Introduction Here is a concise biography of William Shakespeare. For more detailed information see my list of recommended biographies Many people have expressed an interest in a family tree , and some people wonder whether "The Stratfordian" actually wrote the plays or whether someone else used Will's name.
Birth in Stratford William Shakespeare was born around 23rd April 1564 in Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire, the third child and eldest son of John and Mary Shakespeare. John was a glove-maker and prominent member of the community. You may still walk around the house in Henley Street where Will was born and brought up, as we did in the summer of 1996. He almost certainly attended the local school and may even have taught there for a while. At the age of 18 he married 26 year old Anne Hathaway and around six months later their first child Susanna was born. Twins Judith and Hamnet followed less than two years later. As far as we know he and his growing family lived with his parents and his brothers and sisters.
Life in London We don't know exactly when, but sometime in the late 1580's Shakespeare left his family in Stratford and moved to London where he became an actor.

Biography
William Shakespeare

Playwright England Born 23 Apr 1564
Died 23 Apr 1616
William Shakespeare was born at Stratford upon Avon. He was the third child, and eldest son, of John Shakespeare and Mary Arden. His father was one of the most prosperous men of Stratford, who held in turn the chief offices in the town. His mother was of gentle birth, the daughter of Robert Arden of Wilmcote. In December 1582 Shakespeare married Ann Hathaway, daughter of a farmer of Shottery, near Stratford; their first child Susanna was baptised on 6 May 1583, and twins, Hamnet and Judith, on 22 Feb 1585.
Little is known of Shakespeare's early life; but it is unlikely that a writer who dramatised such an incomparable range and variety of human kinds and experiences should have spent his early manhood entirely in placid pursuits in a country town. There is one tradition, not universally accepted, that he fled from Stratford because he was in trouble for deer stealing, and had fallen foul of Sir Thomas Lucy, the local magnate; another that he was for some time a schoolmaster.
In April 1593 Shakespeare published his poem 'Venus and Adonis', which was dedicated to the young Earl of Southampton: it was a great and lasting success, and was reprinted nine times in the next few years. In May 1594, his second poem, 'The Rape of Lucrece', was also dedicated to Southampton.
