Frameshift by Robert J Sawyer
There is science fiction and there is fiction about science. The two do not often meet convincingly. With Frameshift , Robert Sawyer seems to have managed to bridge the gap between the two, and in the process produced an engrossing and satisfying read. Frameshift starts out like a thriller, something that Michael Crichton might have written had he less of an eye on a book's Hollywood potential. Sawyer combines a number of unlikely ingredients: a series of unexplained murders, the Human Genome Project, a Nazi war criminal, a medical insurance company with some peculiar clauses, a Nobel prize-winner with an obsession for Neanderthals, a woman with limited telepathy. Into these basic ingredients, he mixes a Canadian research geneticist with a problem (he has a fifty percent chance of dying prematurely from Huntington's disease), who combines with all of the above and acts as catalyst in a dense and twisting plot with some surprising results. The book is very solidly based in current genetics (I learned a lot about the subject just in the reading), and Sawyer is very skilful in making such a difficult discipline understandable to the layperson. He is also very good with characters. The central relationship between the geneticist, Pierre Tardivel, and Molly Bond (a psychiatry lecturer with a secret of her own) is particularly finely drawn, and forms the bedrock on which the rest of the story is secured. Without giving the intricate plot away (some parts of it are easily guessed, while others are well-hidden and take some considerable time to come to light), it is difficult to give the flavour of this complex and very moving book. Sawyer manages to tie everything together well by the end, and even throws in a delightful theological twist to the genetics, just for good measure.

83. Robert J Sawyer: Factoring Humanity - An Infinity Plus Review
Factoring Humanity by robert J sawyer (HarperCollins Voyager, £5.99,348 pages, paperback; published 4 January 1999.) As with most
http://www.iplus.zetnet.co.uk/nonfiction/factor.htm
Factoring Humanity As with most people, my experience of alternative universes (thus far) has been limited to regrets and to dreams of personal transformation. To wit: in an alternative universe I will be rich - post-Lottery rich. I will be an inch taller; a stone (or so) lighter; fitter, younger, and I will have a straight horizon of hair at the top of my forehead, as distinct from these silly lagoons that are yawning wider as I slowly ape my father's style of no-hairdo. I will not have given up the piano. I will have a metabolism for which cold beer and chicken is the finest possible sustenance... One gets the idea, of course. The very thought of an alternative universe can be a panacea - or a placebo, depending on how one views the matter. And for Kyle, the protagonist of Factoring Humanity , it certainly becomes something to hope for. When he is accused of having molested his two girls when they were children, the accusation comes only from one daughter, Becky, because the other one has already killed herself, some time earlier. Astonished by the charge, Kyle insists (predictably but powerfully) that he is innocent, and even offers to sit a polygraph test - only to be told that such things can be faked. He is alarmed that his estranged wife, Heather, does not seem to know who to believe. Kyle thinks that perhaps, in another universe, he might have been guilty of the crimes. In coded, guarded terms he tells Cheetah, a non-human assistant: "There's a universe in which I return the money to the person who lost it, but there's also a universe in which I keep it for myself. Now, if there are bound to be two universes, then why the heck

Robert J. Sawyer:Fossil Hunter
Robert Sawyer is one of the fastest-rising authors today. Having heard him speak knowledgeably about how one has to work on one's career to get anything out of it, I'm not terribly surprised. I've also heard that he always wanted to be a paleontologist. So it's not that surprising that he has three books out on a planet of sentient dinosaurs, the first being Far-Seer and the most recent being Foreigner My main objection to the series so far is how scientific progress seems to be accelerated. In the last book, the main character, Afsan became Galileo, as well as Columbus/Magellan. In this book, Toroca, one of Afsan's sons becomes Darwin. I kept sighing as I read things, saying, "Oh, no! Not another piece of evidence in favour of evolution! How could they have missed them for so long?" Of course, things are somewhat more complicated than on Earth. How dinosaurs got to Quintaglio(from Earth)is explained... But Sawyer also juggles several other plots. First, some background: Quintaglios have an extreme territorial instinct, violation of which can throw them into a frenzy. They lay eggs in clutches of eight, but to avoid overpopulation, a "bloodpriest" culls seven hatchlings from each clutch. Afsan, being a worldwide hero(having discovered, among other things, that Quintaglio is only a few hundred kilodays away from destruction as it draws nearer to the gas giant it orbits), was granted the survival of all his children. When it is revealed that, for years, the family of the Emperor has received the same treatment, the public reception is not as favourable, and they demand a belated culling; in the meantime, they refuse to let culling of their own eggs take place, resulting in a "baby boom".

Robert J. Sawyer interview at SF Site SF
From A Conversation with Robert J. Sawyer Part 1 , here is Robert J. Sawyer on trilogies: Okay, why do publishers pay more for a book in a successful series? Because they know that people are more likely to buy a book in a series. Why are people more likely to buy a new book in a series? Because they love their favourite characters, and enjoy reading about them. Series characters are like old friends. Reading the latest Vorkosigan novel is like going down to the pub for a drink with your pal from University who is just back from an exotic holiday. A stand-alone novel is more like going out clubbing on a Friday night, and hoping to score with that cutie in the purple hot pants. You can have great fun doing both. (And in both cases there is the possibility that you'll end up in an alley behind the pub or club chundering in the gutter. But maybe that's taking the metaphor too far. Maybe.) I disagree with Sawyer's assertion that series are "artistically" bad for SF. In fact, I think that SF needs

Although he is best known for writing novels, he has also written numerous pieces of short fiction, many of which have been nominated, and won, for awards ranging from the HOMer to the Hugo. Nevertheless, his short fiction is not generally well known, possibly because it doesn't appear in the major genre magazines. This is a collection of 22 stories which were originally published in a variety of anthologies and a few magazines.
Hominids
by Robert J. Sawyer
reviewed by Lisa DuMond
Hard science fiction is easy. Rising above the facts, figures, phenomena, and fancy gadgets to create a story that is so much more is where the true artistry lies. That rarefied air is where you will find this author's novels. Near the top of that even more select list, you will find this one, his latest novel. It's a blend of physics, anthropology, and sociology that snatches up the reader with a sharp hook of a first sentence and just keeps gaining speed.
