B C D ... Z by birthday from the calendar Credits and feedback William Saroyan (1908-1981) American author whose impressionistic stories and sketches celebrated the joy of living in spite of poverty and insecurity during the Great Depression. Several of Saroyan's works were autobiographical. He found his strongest themes in the rootlessness of the immigrant, he praised freedom, and declared kindness and brotherly love as human ideals. "The writer is a spiritual anarchist, as in the depth of his soul every man is. He is discontented with everything and everybody. The writer is everybody's best friend and only true enemy - the good and great enemy. He neither walks with the multitude nor cheers with them. The writer who is a writer is a rebel who never stops." (from The William Saroyan Reader Saroyan was born in Fresno, California, as the son of an Armenian immigrant. His father moved to New Jersey in 1905 - he was a small vineyard owner, who had been educated as a Presbyterian minister. In the new country he was forced to take farm-labouring work. He died in 1911 from peritonitis after drinking a forbidden glass of water given by his wife, Takoohi. Saroyan was put in an orphanage in Alameda with his brothers, but six years later the family reunited in Fresno. At the age of fifteen, Saroyan left the school. His mother showed him some of his fathers writings and he decided to become a writer. Saroyan continued his education by reading and writing on his own, working in several jobs and later as a journalist, living on his writing from 1920.

TIME OF OUR LIVES
MAY 26, 1997
TRANSCRIPT Richard Rodriguez, editor at the "Pacific News Service," discusses the work of author William Saroyan. ELIZABETH FARNSWORTH: Richard Rodriguez of the "Pacific News Service" considers the work of a distinguished American writer. RICHARD RODRIGUEZ: His name was William Saroyan. He was the first writer I fell in love with, boyishly in love. I was held by his unaffected voice, his sentimentality, his defiant individualism. I found myself in the stories he told. Saroyan was the son of Armenian parents who settled in Fresno, in California’s Central Valley. He was born in 1908, almost my own father’s age. Growing up in Sacramento a few hundred miles North a generation later I learned from Saroyan that you do not have to live in some great cityin New York or Parisin order to write. Life in Fresno can be rendered as literature. Late this spring and for most of the summer Stanford University is celebrating its acquisition of the literary archives of William Saroyan. Odd that the letters and the manuscripts of Saroyan would end up here. When I was a student at Stanford, a generation ago, the name of William Saroyan was never mentioned by any professor in the English Department. William Saroyan apparently was not considered a major American talent. Instead, we undergraduates set about the business of psychoanalyzing Hamlet and deconstructing Lolita. In my mind Saroyan belongs with John Steinbeck, a fellow small town Californian and of the same generation. He belongs with Thornton Wilder, with those writers whose aching love of America was formed by the Depression and the shadow of war.
