John Ruskin , the son of a prosperous wine merchant, was born in London in 1819. After being educated at home he studied at Oxford University where he won the Newdigate prize for poetry.
Soon after graduating Ruskin met J. M. W. Turner and decided that he would rescue this great painter from obscurity. This campaign included Ruskin's book Modern Painters I (1843) where he highly praised Turner's work. Ruskin also wrote Modern Painters II (1846) where he championed the pre-Raphaelites.

John Ruskin
John Ruskin, the greatest Victorian bar Victoria, was an artist, scientist, poet, environmentalist, philosopher, and, importantly here, the pre-eminent art critic of his time. He provided the impetus that gained respectability for the Pre-Raphaelites. Ruskin's letter to The Times in 1851, supporting the much-derided Pre-Raphaelites for their naturalism and truth to nature, marked a turning point in their perception by the public. In a second letter, he wrote that the Pre-Raphaelites might "lay the foundation of a school of art nobler than the world has seen for 300 years." When, after this, Ruskin met the Pre-Raphaelites, he encouraged them in their ideals, acting as tutor, mentor, and generous supporter to Rossetti, Millais and Holman Hunt, as well as later artists in a similar spirit such as John Brett and John William Inchbold. He was a long-time friend of the children's illustrator Kate Greenaway, and also of the bird-painter H. S. Marks. Ruskin taught Pre-Raphaelite style drawing at the Working Men's College in London for some years, enlisting Rossetti to teach figure and watercolor painting, and afterwards Ford Madox Brown to fill the same position. Afterwards, he left London, becoming Slade Professor of Art at Oxford (where there is an art college named after him) and then removing to the Lake District where he helped to start the Environmental Movement.

John Ruskin
The English writer John Ruskin, b. Feb. 18, 1819, d. Jan. 20, 1900, was prominent as an art and literary critic and as a social reformer. The only child of a prosperous middle-class couple, he traveled abroad as a boy and developed an interest in art and architecture. While at Oxford he began the serious study of art, which later bore fruit in Modern Painters, a five-volume work that appeared between 1843 and 1860. His aesthetic theory was based on "truth to nature," but this was truth as apprehended by the imagination and not by the eye. Such truth he found most forcefully presented by the paintings of J. M. W. Turner. Affection for Gothic architecture and the principles on which it was based moved Ruskin to write The Seven Lamps of Architecture (1849) and The Stones of Venice (1851-53). Accepted as an authority on art, he was a regular and unsparing critic of Victorian painting and a champion of the Pre-Raphaelites. Ruskin applied similar aesthetic principles to literature, condemning what he called mere realism and praising the vivid imaginative representations of Dante and Spenser. He coined the term pathetic fallacy to characterize an anthropomorphism in literature that he considered false to nature.

In order that people may be happy in their work, these three things are needed: They must be fit for it. They must not do to much of it. And they must have a sense of success in it.

John Ruskin (1819-1900)
Ruskin was the greatest British art critic and social commentator of the Victorian Age. His ideas inspired the Arts and Crafts Movement and the founding of the National Trust, the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings and the Labour Movement. He fiercely attacked the worst aspects of industrialization, and actively promoted art education and museums for the working classes. His prophetic statements on environmental issues speak to our generation as well as to his own. Born on 8 February 1819, the son of a prosperous sherry importer, Ruskin became a published poet and writer on geology by the age of fifteen, by which time he knew the Bible intimately. Throughout his life he undertook extended tours of Britain and the Continent, providing material for literary works such as The Poetry of Architecture The Seven Lamps of Architecture The Stones of Venice Mornings in Florence , and The Bible of Amiens Ruskin's admiration for the work of J.M.W. Turner led to the writing of Modern Painters (5 vols), his

RUSH, B.^RUSHWORTH to Grosseto. The ruins are now thickly overgrown with brushwood; but the walls, nearly 2 m. in circumference, are in places well preserved. They consist of large unworked blocks of a travertine which naturally splits into roughly rectangular blocks; these are quite irregular, and often as much as 9 ft. long by 4 ft. wide: in the interstices smaller pieces are inserted. The walls are embanking walls, with a low breastwork in places. Within the circuit which they enclose, now under cultivation, are two summits, one occupied by a Roman amphitheatre [the other by a tower (?) of uncertain date]: a Roman cistern also is visible. Some 2 m. S.S.W. are modern baths, fed by hot springs, which were in use in Roman times also, as the discovery of remains of Roman buildings shows. See G. Dennis, Cities and Cemeteries of Etruria (London, 1883), ii. 222. (T. As.) Benjamin Rush's writings covered an immense range of subjects, including language, the study of Latin and Greek, the moral faculty, capital punishment, medicine among the American India.ns, maple sugar, the blackness of the negro, the cause of animal life, tobacco smoking, spirit drinking, as well as many more strictly professional topics. His last work was an elaborate treatise on the Diseases of the Mind (1812). He is best known by the five volumes of Medical Inquiries and Observations, which he brought out at intervals from 1789 to 1798 (two later editions revised by the author).
