Program 99-02-14-B
To The Best of Our Knowledge from Wisconsin Public Radio What science needs is — an audience. That's why physicist Clint Sprott takes his show on the road — to Epcot Center and, soon, to your radio dial. In this hour of To the Best of Our Knowledge , the Wonders of Physics. Also Pattiann Rogers reads science poetry and number stories from mathematician John Allen Paulos. SEGMENT 1: Mathematician John Allen Paulos says stories are more difficult to understand than numbers and gives some examples of how language brings confusion to math. Paulos is the best-selling author of "Innumeracy" and "A Mathematician Reads the Newspaper." His new book is "Once Upon a Number: The Hidden Mathematical Logic of Stories." Also, physicist Clint Sprott brings a condensed version of his stage show "The Wonders of Physics" into the studio to amaze Jim Fleming, and wreak havoc with his radio voice. SEGMENT 2: Poet Kurt Brown edited an anthology, "Verse and Universe" of poems that deal with science. Judith Strasser talks with him about bridging the gap between science and literature. Also, poet Pattiann Rogers reads "The Rites of Passage," one of her poems included in the anthology. Steve Paulson talks with Rogers about her delight in using scientific language. Pattiann Rogers' most recent collection of poetry is "Eating Bread and Honey."

Poetry PATTIANN ROGERS Idée Fixe Whether among thickets, spurges or screes,
whether surrounded by fog-filled reeds
on sandbanks and riverbottom woodlands
or threading along hedgerows and rock-
strewn slopes, I have a persistent belief
in a wish so absurd I scarcely speak it aloud.
But maybe you've wanted it also
just once to be acknowledged, maybe
by a single bract of penstemon or a tilt
of sand lily, to receive a slight, the merest of inclinations from any leaf, basal, whorled, to detect a subtle leaning in the stance of a sweet birch sapling or a woodrush blade or a capsule of hickory fruit that might suggest, on its own, an esteem between us. There was a rumor once that lilies grew whiter, bolder with human caressing, and ferns thicker, richer with praise whispered in words against their fronds. And there's the image of St. Francis, warblers and chickadees on his shoulders, wolves and wild deer at his side. Who knows if any of this really happened?

Poetry PattiAnn Rogers Fossil Texts on Canyon Walls 1. Astrophysical Dynamics
There are fables and legends written
right on my bones, on the red grain
of my bones, visible plots, subplots,
captures and escapes, as decipherable
as black ink fictions scribed
on rolled parchments.
And finely needled tattooes-inked
permanently in trumpet creepers,
jungle canopies, moon-webs of winter, bellflowers of blood-compose the inner bowl of my skull. Ancient missas and pre-earth percussions are recorded inside every knuckle, engraved on the turns and curls of my ankles and wrists. By the spine, I am epic, its staff and sway. I am an oratorio of skeleton, an ave of stance. I bear by body the chamber concert of birth, the well-worn recital of death. It's possible then for me to sink also, a myth of sun buried, and to rise again on earth, a parable spoken in stone on a canyon wall. I could truly relent now as if I believed bone were rock and rock light and all boldering stars were fossils of canyon histories, as if I knew stellar

Writing As Reciprocal Creation

Pattiann Rogers
A poet, a mother, a lover of the land and every creature in it, as well as a student of zoology and the new cosmology, Pattiann Rogers is a poet at home in the vocabularly of nature. In The Dream of the Marsh Wren, Rogers reveals the genesis of some of her most admired poems as well as her conception of how and why she writes.
Firekeeper

New and Selected Poems

Pattiann Rogers
The poems in Firekeeper, Pattiann Rogers' sixth book of poetry, are alive, flowing, and full of energy and purpose. They refuse to be contained or defined. Robert Michael Pyle writes, "I love these sparkling, burrowing poems. They know no border between eroticism and death, sheer whimsy and utter gravity, the translucent spirit and the naked body, the sky and the everloving soil."
Eating Bread and Honey

Pattiann Rogers
In this collection, Pattiann Rogers takes readers on a sensual journey through the natural world, delineating our place in it with poems that touch our senses and leave readers quietly satisfied. MORE This Nature Pattiann Rogers "This nature is not a single entity, not a consistent force that sanctions or condemns behavior, not a god-substitute that we can embrace or blame or escape."
