In his three "Mars" novels ( Red Mars, Green Mars, Blue Mars ), Kim Stanley Robinson constructed a vision of the Red Planet and humanity's evolving relationship with it that spans hundreds of years and as many characters. The achievement has been likened to " War and Peace with spaceships"; another comparison might be to a space-age Moby Dick Robinson spoke to SPACE.com about the discovery of an indispensable requirement for life as we know it, whether native to the Red Planet or imported from Earth. "It was no surprise . . . The best analogy for space in the next half century is probably Antarctica in the last half century." SPACE.com:

Icehenge is a strange novel that is split into three distinct parts, culminating in a trip to Pluto to dig up a "mesmerising icehenge". This monolith-like object is a complete mystery, did an alien race put it there? Or was it the last monument to a group of renegades that voyaged out into deep space decades earlier?
The first part follows the activities of a jumped up scientist, now 300 years old, she is caught in the middle of a mutiny on board a dated asteroid-mining ship.

I would hope that it would de-occidentalize them, what we would call 'disorientation,' so that they had to reconsider what they thought they knew about history. As for the current war on terrorism, the more context the better; and the more we know about Islam, the better." Fourteen miles west of California's parking lot-covered capital, Sacramento, you'll find a 70-acre neighborhood of single-family homes and co-op apartments called Village Homes. Each structure in the quiet, tree-lined Davis, California suburb features solar water heating, natural cooling systems and a natural drainage system that also irrigates eight cooperatively cultivated orchards and a vineyard. Energy consumption is one-third to one-half that of other neighborhoods in Davis. Bound together through the "warp and weft" of committees, boards and potlucks, its residents govern Village Homes with a cheerful semblance of democracy. Science fiction novelist Kim Stanley Robinson has served on its elected board of directors, volunteered on the community's horticultural committee and architectural review board, and written for its newsletter. "I moved into Village Homes in 1991," says Robinson, "and it strangely echoed what I had already written in my utopian novel

[in

The Novels of Kim Stanely Robinson
Last updated August 12, 1997 Kim Stanley Robinson is yet another great California science fiction writer (he lives in Davis, California). He is more poetic than the other California SF writers (David Brin, Greg Bear, and Greg Benford) probably because he is not an engineer by training. This is no slam on engineers (I'm one) but there is plenty of room for beauty in language in science fiction, even though it is rare. Kim Stanley Robinson has staked out an interesting territory in the field of science fiction. Basically Robinson writes about the future of society, much like the great Robert Heinline. I think very highly of Kim Robinson. His Mars Trilogy ranks with the finest science fiction writen (despite its flaws).
Red Mars, Green Mars, Blue Mars
For some reason, Robinson decided to try and write a trilogy of novels that would tell the story of the colonization and terra forming of our neighbor planet Mars. These stories are breathtaking in their scope, in the depth of knowledge revealed about Mars, and in the plausibility of the future he describes. In many respects, this is a work of genius.
But the first two novels are flawed. In the first two novels, each chapter continues a roughly sequential narrative by telling the story of a different person. Since each chapter has a different narrator and a different focus, the result is somewhat confusing and very irritating. I understand that Robinson is trying to tell a big story, but he has a lot of space to work with (the total length of the three books together is over 1500 pages). His decision to use different people for each chapter makes the over-all novel wildly uneven. I wish he had stayed with just a few people (like three or four) and told their stories over time. I wish he hadn't killed off his most interesting characters at the end of the first book. I wish he would spend more time dealing with how Earth is reacting to and part of the terraforming of Mars.

Kim Stanley Robinson's Mars Trilogy
I just finished reading these books (Red Mars, Green Mars, and Blue Mars) and can't recommend them too highly. Red Mars won the Nebula award in 1993, and Green Mars and Blue Mars each won the Hugo award (in 1994 and 1997), and all were richly deserved. I can't say I enjoyed these more than any other SF book I've read recently (Neal Stephenson's Cryptonomicon wins that award), but I found them perhaps among the most rewarding of all the science fiction books I've ever read. What is most remarkable about the books is the multiplex layeringideas, story lines, facts, visions of the future. A story of the terraforming of Mars, this book is also a love story for the geology and geography of a planet and the slow succession of ecological progression, a rich exploration of how people are changed by their environment as they in turn change it ("We are areoformed as we terraform Mars."), a wonderful, speculative exploration of the science and technology that might be applied not only to such a massive engineering project as the transformation of a planet, but also the kinds of recreational technologies such a culture might develop, and a thoughtful investigation of politics and cultural evolution as a group of very smart people are faced with the possibility of starting fresh.

Wilderness, Utopia, History
An Interview with Kim Stanley Robinson
by Nick Gevers INTRODUCTION Kim Stanley Robinson is one of SF's most acclaimed authors, and with good reason. His novels and stories are passionate, eloquent, deeply intelligent and informed; they have comprehensively expanded SF's capability to understand - and so describe - the relationship between human beings and their physical environment, surely the genre's quintessential thematic territory. In doing this, they have challenged the right-wing technophilic attitudes of traditional American SF, shifting Hard SF's ideological centre sharply and bracingly leftwards. The literary result is an oeuvre of endless depth and fascination, as compellingly argued as it is magnificently described and characterized. More than two decades into his career as a writer of fiction, Robinson has to date produced nine novels and five story collections. Of the novels, The Wild Shore The Gold Coast (1988), and Pacific Edge (1990), make up the intersecting miscellany of alternate futures known as the Three Californias trilogy; two early titles

The New York Times Book Review
"There is no finer writer of science fiction today than Kim Stanley Robinson, and he is at the top of his form in ANTARCTICA ... a body of work distinguished by two elements all too rare in modern science fiction: a sense of character and a sense of place. Robinson writes about geography and geology with the intensity and unhurried attention to detail of a John McPhee. This is fiction so sturdily underpinned by facts that you might forget the story takes place sometime in the next century."

ROBINSON, KIM STANLEY
The Mars Trilogy
Red Mars
I had high hopes for Red Mars , which were quite thoroughly dashed after reading just a few pages. It is a very ambitious piece of work, with many excellent ideas for terraforming projects and a likely if negative vision of the future. However, it gets completely bogged down with endless discussions of people you just can not identify with or feel any sympathy for. The shifting and stormy relationships of the first hundred colonists on Mars could just as easily have been described in a mainstream novel. Although epic, Red Mars never feels exciting and rarely even interesting. Robinson should have done an essay on terraforming instead. That would have captured the interesting parts nicely. Henrik's opinion: Public opinion:
Green Mars
In this sequel to Red Mars , Robinson continues the story of the Martian colonists in the same style as the first book (unfortunately). The terraforming of Mars continues despite the objections of the fanatical "Reds", and the main characters live on thanks to a new longevity treatment. The characters from the first book and their descendants reach new levels of strangeness and outright stupidity. Sax Russel seems to be the only rational person of the lot. 240K is described as a terrible and lethal temperature, in which the people have to wear heated suits to survive. Pathetic. Sure it is cold, but quite habitable if you just wear some thick, warm clothes.

"Science fiction is one of the most powerful tools of human thought we have" "..the story of terraforming Mars, which is a giant
template for doing these utopian things, simply has to be a long story." "I'm not very firm in my feelings about what is true. I think it's an advantage for a novelist." Kim Stanley Robinson turned 50 in March of this year. He began reading science fiction at the start of the 1970s, as the New Wave was breaking over the genre, and started writing it not long after. He established a reputation for literate science fiction, confirmed by the Orange County trilogy (aka: Three Californias) written during the 1980s. Nevertheless, he is best known for the epic Mars trilogy published over the period from the 1990s. His next two projects nestle in the shadow of that massive work -
