'Curmudgeonly' Quebecer wins humour award for Barney's Version JOHN MCKAY
CP He might be a grumpy old man on the subject of Quebec nationalism, but when Mordecai Richler's subject is fiction, there's no funnier Canadian. That was the conclusion at the 1998 Stephen Leacock Award for Humour luncheon yesterday, when it was announced that Richler was the winner for his book Barney's Version (Knopf, $32.95). Richler was not present but Knopf representative Dianne Martin, who accepted the award on his behalf, suggested that despite his celebrated grumpiness, the Montreal-based writer becomes more appealing as time goes on. "The older and more curmudgeonly he gets, the cuter he gets. I think this is what's happening to Mordecai." Humourist Dave Broadfoot said he, too, was often puzzled by the Richler dichotomy.

Martin O'Malley, CBC News Online
July 2001 ordecai Richler often admitted he was never anything but a writer. He wasn't an academic who poked away on the side at his latest novel. He did journalistic essays and columns, but they were always freelanced pieces; he never slogged it out as a newsroom reporter. He never worked as a stevedore, ironworker or plumber, though as a Jewish boy growing up in Montreal he studied the Talmud and his parents thought some day he would be a rabbi. He considered himself blessed that he loved the work he did when most people hate the work they do. Richler was born on Jan. 27, 1931, in Montreal. His grandfather, a rabbinical scholar, settled there after arriving in Canada in 1904, when he fled the pogroms of Eastern Europe. Richler's father, Moses Isaac, worked as a scrapyard dealer when the family lived on St. Urbain Street (now famous because of Richler's St. Urbain's Horseman

Mordecai Richler Biocritical Essay by Victor J. Ramraj
Two clusters of experience from Richler's boyhood, one actual, the other vicarious, have had a marked effect on his artistic psyche: his growing up in the Jewish community of Montreal during the 1930s and 1940s, of which he has stated, "that was my time, my place, and I have elected myself to get it right"; and his consciousness of the conflicts in Europe, particularly of the defense of Madrid, which made a strong impression on him as a boy of nine and later came to be used in his fiction as a metaphor for honour and heroism. The importance to him of these concurrent sets of experience is pointed up by their appearance again and again in various forms in his fiction and non-fiction. He focuses on both with equal intensity in his novels The Acrobats (1954) and Son of a Smaller Hero (1955), both of which are considered "first novels", defined by George Woodcock as works that present "somewhat realistically the problems, aspirations, and agonies of a young writer".
A third-generation Canadian Jew, Richler was born on January 27, 1931, in Montreal, where his grandfather settled after venturing to Canada in 1904 to escape the Eastern European pogroms. Richler grew up in a self-contained world circumscribed by orthodoxy and by fear and ignorance of French and English Canadians. He attended Jewish parochial school, studied the Talmud and was expected to become a rabbi. At Baron Byng High School (the Fletcher's Field of his fiction), a Protestant school, he began to ease away from orthodoxy and to conceive of himself as both Jewish and Canadian, though this was not always an easy complementary conception of himself. "The minority man", he points out, quoting Norman Mailer, "grows up with a double-image of himself, his own and society's".

Abstract
Canadian author Mordecai Richler traces the sources of his fiction in the immigrant Jewish community of his Montréal childhood and talks about his sometimes controversial reshaping of that past into novels. Richler speaks with candor and wit, and slowly his media image, one of shy abrasiveness, gives way to a fuller portrait. Clips from the movies of his celebrated books, The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz and Joshua Then and Now , offer visual immediacy to his discussion of how biography becomes art. Famed for his comic talents, Richler makes a surprising literary self-definition: "I'm a Jewish writer, and I'm a Canadian writer, but above all, I'm a serious writer."

La Condition Humaine in its English translation its title, Man's Fate . The novel was based on the Shanghai insurrection of 1927. The communist Reds take over the city and a dubious alliance with Chiang Kai-shek's Blues, who then turned against them and re-take the city. In the last pages of the novel, Malraux's protagonist, a European revolutionary, is among a group captured by Chiang Kai-shek's men. They're fed alive, one by one, into the funnel of a coal-fired train engine. In a final act of heroism Malraux's protagonist surrenders his only cyanide pill to a young comrade. Lying awake in bed in Montreal, born too late to have served in the Second World War, I hoped that one day I would be capable of making just such a sacrifice or perhaps something more modest in the name of a noble cause. Instead, well into my sixties, I found myself embroiled in, let's face it, Canada's longest running opera bouffe . A far from life and death struggle, over the size English lettering and outdoor commercial signs in Montreal. I manned the barricades, so to speak, for the legal right to munch unilingually labelled kosher matzah's in Quebec for more than sixty days a year. I also protested the right of a pet shop parrot to be unilingually English. As a consequence, nice people still stop me on the street and thank me for taking a stand. It's embarrassing, for my stand, such as it is, hardly qualifies me as a latter day Spartacus or Tom Paine or Rosa Luxemburg.
