Review of Mercy Among the Children
by David Adams Richards
Doubleday Canada 2000, Hardcover ISBN: 0-385-25917-4 Reviewed by J.M. Lawrence
"Actually the trouble with our National Landscape," writes Australian author Murray Bail in his novel Eucalyptus , "is that it has produced a certain type of behaviour which has been given shape in story-telling, all those laconic hard-luck stories...there's nothing more dispiriting, deja vu, than to come across another story of disappointment set in the Australian back blocks." A first glance at David Adams Richards' Mercy Among the Children may have the reader wondering if Canada has the same problem. Certainly, the woods and water of New Brunswick's Miramichi region are central elements in this and other works by Richards, including a trilogy of novels and a non-fiction book on fly-fishing, Lines on the Water . And the characters of Mercy experience anything but good luck. They are frequently disappointed, to be sure.

An excerpt from Mercy Among The Children
by David Adams Richards Nominated by: Vancouver Public Library, Vancouver, Canada ABOUT THE BOOK Set along Arron Brook in northeastern New Brunswick, and spanning five decades, Mercy Among the Children is a tale of one man's pact with God and its profound impact on his family's destiny.
At the age of twelve, Sydney Henderson pushes his friend Connie Devlin from the church roof. Looking down on Connie's motionless body, Sydney believes he is dead. 'Let Connie live and I will never harm another soul', Sydney vows to God. At that moment, Connie stands up, wipes his bloody nose, and with a laugh, walks away.
In the years that follow, the self-educated, brilliant and now almost pathologically gentle Sydney holds true to his promise. Yet others in the small rural community regard Sydney's pacifism as an opportunity to exploit and torment the vulnerable Hendersons. Raised on the books his father has long collected, Sydney's eldest son Lyle shares a deep respect for the power of words. But forced to witness the persecution of those he loves, Lyle turns his back on God and literature and adopts a more aggressive strategy for the protection of his family. Caught between him and Sydney, Lyle's mother, Elly Henderson, remains unflinching in her devotion to them both, as do his albino sister, Autumn, and his beatific brother, Percy.

NEW BRUNSWICK WRITER DAVID ADAMS RICHARDS ON CBC THURSDAY, MARCH 9
Multi award-winning David Adams Richards is virtually synonymous with the riverside mill town milieu of the Miramichi, the area of New Brunswick where he was born and raised, and where his first eight novels (including the 1998 Governor General's Award-winning Nights Below Station Street ) are set. This strong sense of place is explored in David Adams Richards: My Own Rivers
, on March 9 at 9 p.m. on CBC THURSDAY, home of commercial-free prime time arts programming. Shot on location in and around the Miramichi region, the documentary sheds light on the author's childhood in northern New Brunswick, the influences that formed his love of literature, as well as the major themes, personal struggles and strong sense of landscape that are so crucial to his work. Born in Newcastle, New Brunswick, Richards studied English Literature at St. Thomas University in Fredericton. Three credits shy of his degree, he decided to write full time. His first novel, The Coming Of Winter, was written when he was 22 and received considerable acclaim, winning the Norma Epstein Prize.

David Adams Richards' Address to RHS Grad Class 2001 Note: This speech was to be given at the Grad Ceremony in June 2001, but due to a mix up regarding the date of the graduation, Mr. Richards was not present address the grads. His speech is presented here in its entirety.. I have traveled much in 30 years or so. In some ways it seems it is all I have ever done. Nor do I think I have a wanderlust per se. At least not much more than the average New Brunswick. Like many of us who travel some part of me always believed I could easily have stayed where I started—at home. But like thousands of others from New Brunswick something, hope of advantage or more to the point, hope of adventure or change, the idea that the world was not quite the world where I was has made me adrift over many years. It has made many of the people I know and care about leave this province as well, many before they ever finished school. The opportunity wasn't here, or the commitment to make our lives equitable to those other lives we read about or saw second hand from other parts of the country or North Americawhatever it was we were the ones so often to say goodbye to loved ones and head on down the road. I started just after high school. I hiked across the Maritimes and throughout Newfoundland. Then I left university at the start of my second year to travel with my brother to England Portugal and Spain, and through the Strait of Gibraltar to the Canary Islands.

That is the goal James Baldwin The grammar crime: Unclear pronoun reference makes sentences confusing, vague, and difficult to understand. Question: How do we know if a sentence contains unclear pronoun reference? Outlaw Both Isabel and Barbara loved her children. Determine the pronoun and the antecedent A pronoun refers to a noun. An antecedent is the noun to which the pronoun refers. In our example, the pronoun is her. The antecedent is either Isabel or Barbara. From this sentence we cannot tell whose children they are. Because we cannot tell which of the nouns is the antecedent, this sentence is an unclear pronoun reference outlaw. Rehabilitated Question: How do we catch unclear pronoun reference outlaws?
