Adrienne Rich (1929-) Navigation Biography of Adrienne Rich Poems by Rich Books by Rich Biography of Adrienne Rich To a significant extent, all poets are concerned with transformation. The very making of a poem involves a transformation from perceived reality or experience into a verbal utterance shaped by the poet's imagination and craft. For Adrienne Rich, however, transformation goes beyond the act of writing; it extends to the culture at large through the poem's ability to challenge given assumptions and offer new visions. Rich delineated her poetics relatively early in her career in a 1971 essay, "When We Dead Awaken: Writing as Re-Vision": For a poem to coalesce, for a character or an action to take shape, there has to be an imaginative transformation of reality which is in no way passive... Moreover, if the imagination is to transcend and transform experience, it has to question, to challenge, to conceive of alternatives, perhaps to the very life you are living at that moment. Transformation is thus private as well as public, and Rich's poetry and essays have explored the space where these realms intersect, incorporating feminist, lesbian, historical, non-capitalist, humanitarian, multi-racial, and multi-cultural points of view. The form of her poems has evolved with her content, moving from tight formalist lyrics to more experimental poems using a combination of techniques: long lines, gaps in the line, interjections of prose, juxtaposition of voices and motifs, didacticism, and informal expression. Indeed, no poet's career reflects the cultural and poetic transformations undergone in the United States during the 2Oth century better than that of Adrienne Rich.

A Chronology 1929. Adrienne Rich was born in Maryland, May 16th. Began writing poetry as a child with the encouragement and influence of her father. 1951. Rich graduated from Radcliffe College. Her first book of poems, A Change of World, is published and is chosen by W. H. Auden for the Yale Younger Poets Award. 1952-53. She received Guggenheim Fellowship and traveled in Europe. Begins signs of rheumatoid arthritis. 1953. Rich married Alfred H. Conrad, who was an economist teaching at Harvard. They live in Cambridge, Massachusetts from 1953-1966. 1955. Their first son, David Conrad is born. The Diamond Cutters and Other Poems is published. Rich received Ridgely Torrence Memorial Award for the Poetry Society of America. 1957. Second son, Paul Conrad, is born.

Now 70, she's published more than 16 volumes of poetry and four books of nonfiction, and has been the recipient of nearly every major literary award, including the National Book Award, the Fellowship of the Academy of American Poets, the Ruth Lilly Poetry Prize, the Dorothea Tanning Prize for mastery in the art of poetry given by the Academy of American Poets, and the MacArthur "genius" grant. In 1997, she made headlines when she refused the National Medal for the Arts which is awarded by the White House and the president. In a letter published by the New York Times , Rich wrote to Jane Alexander, then-head of the National Endowment for the Arts: "I cannot accept such an award from President Clinton or this White House because the very meaning of art, as I understand it, is incompatible with the cynical politics of this administration." Rich's career took flight in 1951, when W.H. Auden selected the 21-year-old's first collection of poetry for inclusion in the Yale Younger Poets series. The Progressive January 1994 Issue Adrienne Rich BY MATTHEW ROTHSCHILD It is this mission that sets Rich apart, for she has forsaken the easy path of academic poetry and hurled herself into the political fray. An early feminist and an outspoken lesbian, she has served as a role model for a whole generation of political poets and activists. Consciously she has fused politics and poetry, and in so doing, shealong with Audre Lorde, June Jordan, and a small handful of colleaguesrediscovered and rejuvenated the lost American tradition of political poetry. I spoke with her one cool sunny September afternoon on the patio of her modest home on the outskirts of Santa Cruz, California, which she shares with her partner, the novelist Michelle Cliff. One Poem By Adrienne Rich By Robert Hass May 16, 1999 I I don't completely understand the poem that follows. I get the outline of it. Someone is walking up a hillside. It's probably fall, there's ground mist and the sun's tongue is "licking leaf upon leaf into stricken fluid." And the speaker comes across what she describes as a "shattered head," a skull, perhaps, such as one finds in the woods, a deer or a racoon, but the description suggests a human head, imagined as the place that spring is going to come from: "tendrils soaked into matted compost." The lines that particularly moved me were the first three lines of the following stanza: You can walk by such a place, the earth is made of them where the stretched tissue of a field or woods is humid with beloved matter. The stanza continues in this way: the soothseekers have withdrawn you feel no ghost, only a sporic chorus when that place utters its worn sigh let us have peace I can think of poets who would end there, but Rich is not a poet to reconcile us, or herself, with the idea of death and regeneration. That is the quality of her mind for which I felt, this week, particularly grateful. In the poem the unappeased skull answers back. Here is the whole poem: Shattered Head A life hauls itself uphill through hoar-mist steaming the sun's tongue licking leaf upon leaf into stricken liquid When? When? cry the soothseekers
