HELLO WORLD! This website is the homepage for Philip Freihofner, oboist, composer, and music publisher. Included on this site are samples of works in print (mostly for Double Reed Quartet), as well as a list of vendors from whom these works can be purchased.
About Double Reed Quartets
The Double Reed Quartet usually consists of two oboes, English Horn and bassoon, with occasional substitutions. The most common substitution is oboe d'amore for the second oboe, and I have seen bass oboe used for bassoon. Another variant is oboe, English horn, tenor oboe, bassoon, as used by the Zurich Quartet. The sound of these instruments together has to be heard to be fully appreciated! It is rich and warm, capable of great expressivity and nuance. It excels in works which call for liveliness, humor, but also the melancholic and evocative moods. Colors can range from brassy to vocal. Of "single family" ensembles, perhaps only the classic string quartet has a broader coloristic and expressive range, though it seems to me there are places a double reed quartet can go that a string quartet has never reached. Historically, the earliest precursor perhaps would be a renaissance krummhorn consort. In fact, renaissance music translates to the modern DRQ rather well. The bright texture works well with the dance music, and the vocal qualities of the double reeds lend themselves favorably to the performance of madrigals and other SATB vocal works.

PRINCETON Former Citigroup CEO and current Visiting Professor at Princeton University, John Reed, is the focus of a protest today by the national corporate accountability organization Infact over Reeds decisions as a member of the board of tobacco giant Philip Morris. Local activists from Infact, the American Lung Association of New Jersey, the New Jersey Green Party, NJ GASP, and area colleges, universities, and religious congregations are calling on Reed to use his leadership role within Philip Morris to help stop abuses like the Marlboro Man. Protestors wearing Marlboro Man skull masks are urging area residents to Boycott Philip Morriss Kraft Foods to pressure the corporation to stop promoting tobacco to kids and to stop interfering in public health policy. Boycotters from Princeton, Trenton, and around the country have signed thousands of messages calling on Philip Morris to withdraw the Marlboro Man-described by its creator as the right image to capture the youth markets fancy and arguably the worlds largest source of youth tobacco addiction. Local community members, including three ninth-grade classes from Trenton High School, have signed a giant message being delivered to John Reed. We are here today to urge John Reed, a member of our community, to do the right thing. As a member of a very powerful board of directors, John Reed can influence the decision to save millions of lives by retiring the Marlboro Man, says Emily Cook, Co-chair of the Mercer County Green Party.

Philip Reed 8th District (Part of New York County)
Councilmember Reed was born in New York City and raised in Harlem and on the Upper West Side. He was named for A. Philip Randolph, a mentor of his father's and a leader in the fight for worker's rights. From the beginning, the Civil Rights movement dominated Councilmember Reed's household and his life. Councilmember Reed's parents encouraged him to become involved and taught him the one ideal that has dominated his life: everyone has a responsibility to fight injustice and intolerance whenever and wherever it is found. Councilmember Reed began his fight against prejudice by organizing voter registration drives, youth boycotts, and protests with Dr. Martin Luther King. Councilmember Reed left New York to pursue studies in political science and history at colleges in California and Ohio while supporting himself by working in construction. While in California, Councilmember Reed became involved in the fight for union representation for farm workers. After college Councilmember Reed began working for Otis Elevator, first in California, then in New York, where he worked his way up to Senior Sales Representative.

Other Past Leaders Philip Reed found his way to the helm of General Electric in an altogether different way from that traveled by Charles Wilson. He was born in comfortable circumstances in Milwaukee in 1899, the year Wilson went to work as an office boy.
Reed attended the public schools of Milwaukee and in 1917 entered the University of Wisconsin, but quit in his freshman year to join the Army. An appendix operation kept him out of the American Expeditionary Forces; when the Armistice came he was at Fort Monroe, training for the heavy artillery.
Reed returned to Wisconsin to complete his degree in electrical engineering. GE, then scouting for engineering talent, offered Reed a job at $115 a month, but he refused it. Instead, because he wanted to marry Mabel Mayhew Smith, he got a $2,000-a-year job with a firm of patent lawyers in New York. Reed had no special desire to be a lawyer, but the salary looked ''as large as the setting sun." By studying nights at Fordham, he got his law degree in 1924, and in due course was admitted to the New York Bar.
In 1926, a lawyer friend of Reed's told him that Judge C. W. Appleton, a GE vice president, was looking for an assistant. Contact was made, and as a result, Reed went to work for Appleton in GE's law department in New York. There he had frequent contact with Swope and Young, who gave him an assortment of special assignments.
