A $2.9 million gift from the Ewing Halsell Foundation of San Antonio is underwriting the operation that will annually print six to eight book titles with regional and Southwestern, environmental, or literary themes. Barbara Ras, former assistant director and executive editor of the University of Georgia Press and an award-winning poet and published author, will serve as director of the Press. She began her duties at Trinity in mid-July. Her first book of poems, Bite Every Sorrow (Louisiana State University Press,) received the 1997 Walt Whitman Award, and she subsequently won the Kate Tufts Discovery Award for poetry. Her work has appeared in many magazines and anthologies. Ms. Ras is working with administrators to create a mission statement Char Miller, professor and chair of the history department and also a published author, chaired the search committee that recommended the hiring of Ms. Ras.

For the week of April 5, 1999 Around Campus Vice President Anne Gormly showed her good sportsmanship when she donned her wading boots, climbed into a pen, and made good on her promise to kiss a pig for a good cause. Gormly won the honor when she managed to raise more than $3,100 for the Boys and Girls Club. It's the most anyone has raised since the Kiss a Pig fundraiser began three years ago. Three cheers go to Gormly and all the members of the campus community who donated to the cause. The program will feature a wide range of music from the women's choral repertoire of the 19th and 20th centuries, including Emma Lou Diemer's "Fragments from the Mass," Pablo Casals' "Nigra Sum," Robert A. Harris' "What Passion Cannot Music Raise or Quel!," and David Brunner's "Yo Le Canto Todo El Dia." The featured work will be Vincent Persichetti's "Winter Cantata" during which the ensemble will be accompanied by Brian Wolfe, marimbaist; and Danielle Elizondo, flutist. In celebration of the 100th anniversary of Francis Poulenc's birth year, the choir will perform his "Ave verum corpus." The concert will end with a favorite spiritual, "Go Down Moses" and a choral benediction titled, "May the Road Rise to Meet You." The Women's Ensemble is under the direction of Dr. Jerry Olson and accompanied by Dr. Ann Caldwell. Brandy Dugger is the choir president.
