At the close of the last century, Modern Library, the prestige publisher, announced its list of the 100 best novels of the 100 years, as chosen by a panel of top writers and scholars. Not a single work by Ayn Rand made the list. Then, turning the contest into a national parlor game, Modern Library invited ordinary readers to submit their choices. A quarter of a million responded, and presto! Rand's magnum opus, Atlas Shrugged, scored No. 1, and three more Rand novels appeared in the top 10. This news might have brought a contemptuous smile to Ayn Rand's stony face, but for one thing: Her chief competitor was L. Ron Hubbard, who

The Benefits and Hazards of the Philosophy of Ayn Rand: A Personal Statement
    by Nathaniel Branden, Ph.D. ( NathanielBranden@compuserve.com
Abstract: For eighteen years I was a close associate of novelist-philosopher Ayn Rand whose books, notably The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged , inspired a philosophical movement known as objectivism. This philosophy places its central emphasis on reason, individualism, enlightened self-interest, political freedom and a heroic vision of life's possibilities. Following an explosive parting of the ways with Ayn Rand in 1968, I have been asked many times about the nature of our differences. This article is my first public answer to that question. Although agreeing with many of the values of the objectivist philosophy and vision, I discuss the consequences of the absence of an adequate psychology to support this intellectual structure focusing in particular on the destructive moralism of Rand and many of her followers, a moralism that subtly encourages repression, self-alienation, and guilt. I offer an explanation of the immense appeal of Ayn Rand's philosophy, particularly to the young, and suggest some cautionary observations concerning its adaptation to one's own life. This article is reprinted from the Journal of Humanistic Psychology , where it appeared in issue number four of volume twenty-four in the Fall of 1984 on pages thirty-nine through sixty-four. It is an adaptation of a speech first delivered at the University of California at San Diego on May 25, 1982, which is available on

Rand, Ayn 1905-82, American writer, b. St. Petersburg, Russia. She came to the United States in 1926 and worked for many years as a screenwriter. Her novels are romantic and dramatic, and they espouse a philosophy of rational self-interest that opposes the collective of the modern welfare state. Her best-known novels include The Fountainhead (1943) and Atlas Shrugged (1957). • The New York Times on the Web: Current Film Forum
  • Join a Discussion on Movies By JANET MASLIN EW YORK Considering Ayn Rand's ardent faith in individualism, what would she have made of the slavish new two-and-a-half-hour documentary in her honor? Michael Paxton's "Ayn Rand: A Sense of Life" does little beyond appreciating its subject as unwaveringly as possible. Dutiful in outlook and utterly conventional in format, this film is an Academy Award contender despite its clear inferiority to such non-nominees as "East Side Story" and "Sick," not to mention Errol Morris' visionary "Fast, Cheap and Out of Control." Documentary filmmaking loses the respect it deserves when such a pedantic specimen is rewarded at the expense of truly imaginative work. Using talking heads, still photographs and generic stock scenes (a glimpse of the Statue of Liberty to indicate arrival in America) to illustrate dry biographical data, "Ayn Rand: a Sense of Life" traces the rise of its subject and her philosophy. She herself defined the latter as "a religion, an obsession or a mania, all of these expressed in one word: individualism." And she embodied it as stubbornly and provocatively as she knew how. The film follows her from the early experiences in postrevolutionary Russia that shaped her hatred of collectivism to the literary success that won her a devoted cult following. It continues into her late celebrity years in America, where she conducted some of her most visible debates with talk show hosts. Ms. Rand's appearance on the "Tonight" show is mentioned but not shown here, though it's the kind of episode that might have lent the film some idiosyncratic life.

The Ayn Rand Letter - Contents by Title
The Ayn Rand Letter was published monthly from October 1971 to February 1976. It was rather different in format from its predecessors ( The Objectivist Newsletter and The Objectivist ). It presented a single major article per issue, in the style of a typewritten letter. It was originally published fortnightly, but Rand's ill health caused the letter to become increasingly behind schedule, ultimately having issues dated for September 1974 but published in mid-1975. In 1975 the The Ayn Rand Letter officially went to a monthly schedule, promptly dropped to a bi-monthly schedule, and then ceased publication. Rand was the publisher, editor and the author of most of the articles, although Leonard Peikoff contributed some articles as well. The table below lists the title of every item published in The Ayn Rand Letter (alphabetically), followed by the issue date (chronologically, since some items are recurring columns that have the same title in multiple issues), author, and the volume/issue number. Commentary
    Liberals and Ayn Rand
    by James Fallows
T he first time I read Atlas Shrugged was in the summer of 1963, a year before the Goldwater campaign. I was in my early teens at the time, about to begin high school, and very much wrapped up in the right-wing political movements which were then so strong in the part of Southern California where I lived. I quickly got my hands on the major scriptures of the Goldwater crusade, which included Goldwater's own Conscience of a Conservative , the Birch Society's Blue Book , Phyllis Schlaffly's A Choice Not an Echo , and the works of Ayn Rand. I was dutiful enough about memorizing Schlaffly and the Blue Book , but my heart was always with Ayn Rand. The rest of the books might be campaign propaganda, but this, I knew, was philosophy. The Fountainhead We the Living and most of all Atlas Shrugged these three novels articulated a view of life, men, and morals which completely captivated my political imagination. As I read them, I felt that Ayn Rand was enabling me to make sense of what I had observed myself, as well as opening up new dimensions I had not begun to consider. The unique appeal of Atlas Shrugged was that it mirrored the world that I saw; although this is not a comparison I would have made at the time, it provided me with the same shock of recognition the early Bolsheviks must have felt on first reading Marx. The book's most fervent plea was that each man should be permitted to succeed, to rise as high as his abilities would take him, without anyone else getting in the way. Those who failed or were defeated should not be permitted to shift the blame to anyone but themselves. Their frustration or need, by itself, did not constitute a claim for "charity" from their abler brothers.

    Ayn Rand
By Catherine Daligga The eldest of three sisters, Ayn Rand was born Alissa Rosenbaum on February 2, 1905, in St. Petersburg, Russia, to Fronz and Anna Rosenbaum. Her father, a pharmacist, had his own shop, a rare position for Jews in Russia. A precocious child, Alyssa declared herself an atheist in her early teens, and while she never denied her Jewish heritage, she also never softened her opposition to religion or any other form of "mysticism." The privations she and her family endured as a result of the Russian Revolution, Including the Bolsheviks taking possession of her father's business, affected her deeply. Somehow she managed to survive the purges of bourgeois students long enough to obtain a degree in history from the University of Leningrad in 1924. At the university, she took a few classes in American political history and found the principles expressed in the Declaration of Independence fascinating. Despite the progressively isolationist policy of the Soviets, some Western exports still found their way to Russia in the 1920s. For Alyssa, the most important were American movies. Conditions in the United States-at least as depicted on the screen-impressed her as strongly as conditions at home repelled her, so when distant cousins provided the miraculous opportunity to travel to the United States, she did not hesitate. She turned twenty-one in Berlin, on her way to America. At immigration, she announced that her first name was Ayn (pronounced to rhyme with "pine"). Shortly after, she chose the second part of her beloved typewriter's brand name for her surname.

    Cons
Laughing out loud 4 times in 1200 pages isn't enough Full Review Expressing an opinion on Ayn Rand is like expressing an opinion on the Bible or the Backstreet Boys. People who believe have strong, even virulent, views. And they're not takin' any of your cr*p. An attack on the author or the philosophy is an attack on them. People take these things to heart. But at least if you take an anti-Bible view, there are others out there to stand by your side. People who disagree with Ayn Rand simply don't give a damn. So I'll stand alone on this one, the target of those slings and arrows from you Randies, you YAFers, you Goldwater Republicans. The Story Atlas Shrugged is for Randies what the Republic On the Social Contract , the Politics , the Treatise on Human Nature and Leviathan are to real philosophers: An attempt to describe the nature of civil human relations, a stab at normative ethics and a dream of an ideal society.
