Sir Walter Raleigh's American colonies
See my main page on Sir Walter for other aspects of his career. Interesting item 1 - Raleigh's first expedition landed and the crew asked the local Indians the name of the country. Raleigh then put a Bill before Parliament to confirm his rights to what translates as "You've got good clothes". Interesting item 2 - Raleigh never landed in North America - he just organised and part-financed the expeditions. However, there is a painting in the National Maritime Museum showing him claiming Virginia for England - evidently by an artist with a good sense of imagination.
Raleigh was such a favourite that the Queen refused to permit him to go off on expeditions. Thus it was the ships he provided and the men he instructed who actually went to the "New World" and brought back a number of new discoveries. Interesting item 3 - It was one of his employees (Thomas Hariot - see below) who brought back the first potato to the British Isles and this was first planted on Raleigh's Irish estate.

En 1582 promueve una flota para atacar galeones españoles en las Azores. HUTCHINSON ENCYCLOPEDIA Raleigh, Walter English adventurer, writer, and courtier to Queen Elizabeth I. He organized expeditions to colonize North America 158487, all unsuccessful, and made exploratory voyages to South America in 1595 and 1616. His aggressive actions against Spanish interests, including attacks on Spanish ports, brought him into conflict with the pacific James I. He was imprisoned for treason 160316 and executed on his return from an unsuccessful final expedition to South America. He is traditionally credited with introducing the potato to Europe and popularizing the use of tobacco. Born in Devon, England, Raleigh became a confidant of Queen Elizabeth I and was knighted in 1584. He led a gold-seeking expedition to the Orinoco River in South America in 1595 (described in his Discoverie of Guiana of 1596).

    The Sir Walter Raleigh Collection
The Sir Walter Raleigh Collection is a distinguished component of the North Carolina Collection at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The collection of over one thousand titles preserves writings by Raleigh, materials about Raleigh, and works on English exploration during the Elizabethan Era. Sir Walter Raleigh (1554?-1618) was born in Devon to a family of modest means but good connections. After serving as a mercenary in France while a teenager, Raleigh joined the court of Elizabeth I where he soon became a favorite of the Queen. A position at court opened doors for Raleigh; in 1584 he took over his half brother Humphrey Gilbert's patent to explore and colonize the east coast of America. Raleigh never traveled to North America himself, but, shortly after gaining the patent, he sent three expeditions to North America. The first, in 1584, was chiefly a reconnaissance mission. The second, in 1585, created a base camp for further exploration. On the final expedition, in 1587, colonists established what was meant to be a permanent settlement on Roanoke Island in present-day North Carolina. The colony failed, and the fate of the colonists remains a mystery. The settlement is known today as "The Lost Colony." Raleigh was the classic "Renaissance man." In addition to being a soldier, courtier, and adventurer, he was also a freethinker, poet, and historian. The Sir Walter Raleigh Collection contains Raleigh's surviving writings in contemporary and modern editions. In addition to Raleigh's own works, it includes volumes on Raleigh, associates of Raleigh such as John White and Humphrey Gilbert, Elizabeth I and her court, and English explorations of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The collection is comprised of a variety of printed materials, including primary texts, scholarly monographs and journals, historical pamphlets, brochures, and ephemera. It also contains some audiovisual materials and a few manuscripts. The collection has been built through gifts and purchases; collecting is ongoing. The following examples of recent acquisitions give some idea of the collection's range:

In London, England, on a chilly, overcast morning in October 1618, a masked executioner held his bloody axe in one hand and with the other raised a severed head to the crowd that had gathered in the Old Palace Yard of Westminister. Sir Walter Raleigh, a man who personified the national ambitions of England in the "Age of Discovery," was dead. Why did this daring soldier, explorer, historian, and once trusted advisor to Queen Elizabeth end his life on the chopping block? Answers to this question, along with many others pertaining to the man for whom North Carolina's capital is named, can be found in the Sir Walter Raleigh Collection, which is one of the larger and more historically valuable special collections within the North Carolina Collection.
The Sir Walter Raleigh Collection contains rare books, pamphlets, manuscripts, and maps, many of which date from Raleigh's time, from the late 16th and early 17th centuries. Selections from this collection and other artifacts are on display in the NCC Gallery, where there are exhibit cases and historic rooms. The Gallery's Sir Walter Raleigh Rooms feature original English furniture from the late Elizabethan and Jacobean periods ( ca.

R A L E I G H Part 18: The Return to America Raleigh reprovisioned on the Island of Gomera in the Canary Isles, helped by the half-English wife of the Governor. Three days after leaving, he decided to make for the Cape Verde Islands for more supplies of fresh meat because fifty of the crew of the Destiny were out of action through sickness. They entered the harbour during a disastrous hurricane which led to one of the pinnaces sinking after having been rammed by the bowsprit of the Destiny . Later, as they lay becalmed, deaths among the crew began to increase. They Raleigh's friend, John Talbot, who had served him for eleven years in the Tower. Sir Walter fell sick himself and became so ill that he was unable even to write his journal. It took the ships forty days to reach Trinidad. It should have taken twelve.

Back to the Sir Walter Raleigh Welcome Page A Short Biography of Sir Walter Raleigh Sir Walter Raleigh signed his name many different ways. Once, in 1578, he signed it Rawleyghe. Until 1583 he signed it Rauley. From 1584 until 1618, when he was executed, he signed it Ralegh . Today, people prefer to spell it Raleigh. He is thought to have been born around 1552 at Hayes Barton, Devonshire, England. He fought for the Huguenots in 1596. He privateered with his half brother Sir Humphrey Gilbert. Privateering is when the queen or king gives permission to seize other ships at sea and take their cargos. It was legal pirating. Raleigh was one of Queen Elizabeth's favorite courtiers. He was also well known for his writing and poetry. In 1584, Raleigh sent an expedition from Plymouth,England, which was commanded by Phillip Amadas and Arthur Barlowe. They landed off the coast of what is now known as North Carolina, on July 13,1584.When they returned, they brought back two Native Americans named Manteo and Wanchese. As a result of this, Raleigh was knighted on January 6,1585 by Queen Elizabeth I. Raleigh made Queen Elizabeth mad by secretly marrying Bessie Throckmorton. The queen locked them in the Tower of London. They were released by Christmas.
