http://www.fas.harvard.edu/~annradtr/about.html
The Ann Radcliffe Trust in Harvard College,
a unique opportunity for women. The Ann Radcliffe Trust was created in the pioneering, independent spirit of Ann Radcliffe, who, in 1643, established the first scholarship fund for Harvard College, and for whom Radcliffe College was named two-and-a-half centuries later. The Ann Radcliffe Trust addresses issues of importance to Harvard women. The Ann Radcliffe Trust is primarily funded by the Houghton Endowment, which was established by a gift from Maisie K. Houghton '62 and James R. Houghton '58. Additional funding has also been provided by the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study. A group of Ann Radcliffe Trust Associates are stewards of the Trust. Composed of faculty, administrators, alumnae, and alumni, the Trust Associates meet to review the state of the Trust and to oversee its effectiveness in furthering its goals. A Faculty and Student Advisory Committee is responsible for the programmatic management of the Trust. Students on the committee represent the major women-oriented student organizations in the College, and others are appointed because of a particular interest or expertise. All students serve on a rotating basis. The Faculty and Student Advisory Committee meets regularly throughout the academic year. Undergraduates may apply to sit on the Faculty and Student Advisory Committee 2002-2003 . Subcommittees are devoted to the following areas of Trust interest: grants; programs, including symposia, panels, and discussion series; special events, such as conferences, the Berylson Lecture, and training programs; the Harvard College Women's Leadership Awards; and women's issues, policy, and outreach.

Ann Blair Awarded Radcliffe Junior Faculty Fellowship at Bunting
Ann Blair, an assistant professor in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, has been awarded the fourth Radcliffe Junior Faculty Fellowship at the Mary Ingraham Bunting Institute of Radcliffe College. Blair, who teaches courses in European intellectual and cultural history, and conducts tutorials in the history and literature concentration, will spend the 1998-99 academic year studying the evolution of the encyclopedia from the mid-16th century to 1750. "I am honored to award this fellowship to Ann Blair," said Radcliffe College President Linda S. Wilson. "We often think of ourselves as living in the world's 'information age.' However, Ann's work demonstrates that compiling and organizing important knowledge has been with us for centuries." Blair's project is titled "The Development of the Encyclopedic Reference Work in Early Modern Europe." Today's encyclopedic form is largely based on the encyclopedia of Diderot and d'Alembert, which was first published in 1750. Blair's research will focus on the diversity of encyclopedic forms that preceded the 1750 publication. Just as we are experiencing an explosion of knowledge and information today, Europeans in the wake of the Renaissance were struggling to compile, manage, and integrate a massive influx of new information.

67. Religion In Anne Radcliffe's The Mysteries Of Udolpho
Emily's Search for Truth. One of the most prevalent themes in ann radcliffe'sThe Mysteries of Udolpho , Emily's search for truth takes on many forms.
http://www.gettysburg.edu/project/eng/projects/eng335/four/udolpho.html
ne of the predominant themes in The Mysteries of Udolpho , like the novels of many of Radcliffe's contemporaries, is the question of God's role in the world. Radcliffe's exploration of this topic would inspire many of the gothic authors who would follow her, including Matthew Lewis, whose novel The Monk was written in response to Radcliffe. Through the character of Emily St. Aubert, Radcliffe explores the reality of God's existence and the part He/She plays in the material world, basing her own beliefs on the conclusions of Emily.
Emily's Search for Truth
One of the most prevalent themes in Ann Radcliffe's The Mysteries of Udolpho , Emily's search for truth takes on many forms. She is engrossed in a search for her father's past, the mystery of what happened to Ludovico, and many others which act as subplots of the novel. Possibly the most important of Emily's searches, at least as far as the reader and maybe Radcliffe is concerned is her quest for Divine Providence. Religion, for Emily St. Aubert, is deeply rooted in her superstitions. Unlike her companion Annette, who takes a vulgar approach to the possibility of the supernatural, Emily believes that the supernatural is a sign of God's Divine presence in the world. If the supernatural exists, than it is a sign that God also exists. As the reader follows Emily through the novel, he/she is dragged along with her as she continually encounters the "supernatural." The "supernatural" manifests itself in several forms, just a few of which are:

The Development of Pattern Vision and Spatial Cognition in Human Infants
Photo by Steve Gilbert Ann Skoczenski has been a pioneer in the development of a new paradigm to study visual system development in human and non-human primates. Using psychological and neurophysiological techniques, Skoczenski's research brings an interdisciplinary approach to the field. Skoczenski is an associate scientist at Smith-Kettlewell Eye Research Institute. Her recent research has been published in journals including Nature and Investigative Ophthalmology and Visual Science. While at the Bunting, Skoczenski will work on the project entitled "The Development of Pattern Vision and Spatial Cognition in Human Infants." She proposes to complete a study of complex pattern processing during infancy and to design experiments relating the development of pattern vision and spatial representations. She will study the development of spatial position sensitivitythe ability to discern the relative position of different elements in visual patterns.

heart of the matter
Photo by Steve Gilbert Ann Messner has skillfully combined her interest in feminist issues with her consummate knowledge of traditional sculptural means, such as casting in a variety of materials, coupled with an eclectic investigation into the "found" object. Her most recent exhibition, "Amniotic Sea," was a temporary public installation in New York's Foley Square. Other temporary public installations have been sited at New York's City Hall, Times Square, and the New Museum of Contemporary Art. During her fellowship year, Messner will investigate the nondiagnostic, creative use of advanced medical imaging. With the cooperative interests Cardiac MRI at Boston's Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital, she will create an installation that considers a fusing, metaphorically, of the arts and science. She will be working on a project titled "heart of the matter" utilizing these animated images as part of an integrated sculptural installation. Messner received her BFA in fine art from the Pratt Institute. She is the recipient of the Anonymous Was A Woman Award in 1998, a John Simon Guggenheim Foundation Award in 1996, a Henry Moore International Fellowship (UK) in 1995, and a National Endowment for the Arts award in 1987. In 2001-2002 she will be a Senior Fellow of the Council of the Humanities at Princeton University.
