Radcliffe, Ann
9 July 1764 - 7 February 1823
Hugely popular Gothic novelist of the 1790s (and beyond), Radcliffe crafted a brand of explained supernaturalism (which owed not a little to the early novels of Charlotte Smith ) that struck a chord with British readers during the anxious 1790s. Her blend of moralism, aesthetics, and drama became definitive for the more genteel strain of Gothic fiction during the Romantic period. Hers is one of the most famous early names of the Gothic tradition; The Mysteries of Udolpho is an essential Gothic text, though many readers prefer The Italian and the oft-overlooked The Romance of the Forest

I could a tale unfold, whose lightest word Would harrow up thy soul. William Shakespeare, Hamlet Fate sits on these dark battlements, and frowns, And, as the portals open to receive me, Her voice, in sullen echoes through the courts, Tells of a nameless deed. Ann Radcliffe Dark power! With shudd'ring, meek submitted thought Be mine to read the visions old Which thy awak'ning bards have told, And, lest thou meet my blasted view, Hold each strange tale devoutly true. William Collins, Ode to Fear Rocks on rocks piled, as if by magic spell, Here scorch'd by lightnings, there with ivy green. James Beattie With many a foul, and midnight murder stain'd. Ann Radcliffe (adapted from Gray) unfold What worlds, or what vast regions, hold The' immortal mind, that hath forsook Her mansion in this fleshy nook! John Milton Such are those thick and gloomy shadows damp, Oft seen in charnel-vaults and sepulchres, Hovering, and sitting, by a new-made grave. John Milton Terror and horror are so far opposite, that the first expands the soul, and awakes the faculties to a high degree of life; the other contracts, freezes, and nearly annihilates them. I apprehend that neither Shakespeare nor Milton by their fictions, nor Mr. Burke by his reasoning, anywhere looked to positive horror as a source of the sublime, though they all agree that terror is a very high one; and there lies the great difference between horror and terror, but in uncertainty and obscurity, that accompany the first, respecting the dreader evil.

http://members.aol.com/iamudolpho/radcliffe.html
The English Gothic Novel
1764 to 1834
It is a curious coincidence of literary history that the stars that reigned in the year of the nativity of The Castle of Otranto (1764) saw the birth of Mrs. Ann Radcliffe (Ward), in whose works we perceive the Gothic fiction approaching its meridian. Not much is known about her life, except that she was the wife of an Oxford graduate, and that she wrote her weird and mysterious tales beside a blazing fire in a quiet room to enliven her long, solitary winter evenings. Extraordinary fascinating stories flowed from her pen which, with all their faults, unmistakably bear the stamp of genius. The name of this potent enchantress, who touched the secret springs of fear and extended the domain of romance, was felt as a spell by her admirers, and to this day her blood-curdling terrors freeze many a midnight reader.
Yet she was known only by her works. The Edinburgh Review (May 1823) declares: "She never appeared in public, nor mingled in private society, but kept herself apart, like the sweet bird that sings its solitary notes, shrouded and unseen." She spent a life in the quiet shade of domestic seclusion, unheeded amidst the bustle of the world, confining her activities to domestic duties and homely pleasures. "She was more than repaid by the enjoyments which were fostered in the shade; and perhaps few distinguished authors have passed a life so blameless and so happy." . . . She probably attended Sophia Lee's school at Bath, and perhaps the only reference we get about her person is given by Charles Bucke in an interesting footnote to a curious work

Ann Radcliffe: A Biography
Ann Radcliffe was born in Holborn, London on July 9, 1764 in the parish of St. Andrew's. She was the first and only child of William Ward and his wife Ann Oates. As a little girl, Ann Radcliffe had few companions her own age, causing a somewhat isolated childhood. Although there is no concrete evidence that she attended a local school, Ann Radcliffe received a good education, though not a classical one. During the earlier years of her youth, she lived in a cultured and artistic society. These experiences are reflected through her work where she shows her respect and appreciation for nature. Prior to her marriage, Ann Radcliffe had a love for reading and poetry, which was a common characteristic of young ladies in good society. At Bath in 1788, Ann was married to a young man by the name of William Radcliffe. As an editor for the English Chronicle , William kept to a grueling schedule of long hours. The newly wed wife was affected by these long hours and began to write for his amusement. Her husband immediately recognized Ann's talent for writing and encouraged her to pursue writing seriously. Through her writings , Ann revealed brilliant illusions, sweetly romantic temperament and an enthusiastic admiration for all that was beautiful, weird, or mysterious.

It is the origin and extent of the mysteries surrounding Ann Radcliffe which form the substance of Norton's resourceful and entertaining account . ... But in Norton's hands the circumstantial life can be made to yield a great deal. This is the case with the densely mapped Unitarian family background from which the young Ann Ward is seen to emerge ... If Norton is right, then
