QUINTILIAN ON HUMOR AS RHETORIC
In Institutes of Oratory , the classical philosopher Quintilian defines rhetoric as “the science of speaking well," and he uses the term "rhetoric" interchangeably with "oratory." He defines humor, on the other hand, as a "talent with "certain imperious forces of its own." Those "forces" are largely dependent on the audience, how the audience receives and reacts to humor. Nevertheless, humor has a general tendency to dispel the “graver emotions of the judge by exciting his laughter.” Quintilian , however, draws the line as to how far humor can be used. For instance, Quintilian states, “Our jests should never be designed to wound.” Yet, much of the humor on the September 11 attacks is indeed intended to “wound,” Osama Bin Laden in particular. Quintilian seems to warn against this kind of behavior, saying that “it is the duty not merely of the orator, but of any reasonable human being, when attacking one whom it is dangerous to offend to take care that his remarks do not end in exciting serious enmity.” Indeed, the attacks on Osama Bin Laden may result in “exciting serious enmity” not just between Bin Laden sympathizers and America but between members of the Arab race and supporters of the war on terrorism if the humorous attacks go too far and are taken too seriously. I thought it might be useful if the text to which AF refers were available, so I post it below, from the Loeb of H. E. Butler.[[1]] Quintilian has been discussing the many things of which a speaker must be in control as he speaks, and specifically the necessity to keep looking ahead in order to ensure a smooth and ordered delivery. IO 10.7.11, and Quintilian's description of the technique, is as follows: Est igitur usus quidam irrationalis, quern Graeci A)/LOGON TRIBH/N vocant, qua manus in scribendo decurrit, qua oculi totos sirnul in lectione versus flexusque eorum et transitus intuentur, et ante sequentia vident quam priora dixerunt. Quo constant miracula illa in scenis pilariorum ac ventilatorum, ut ea quae emiserint ultro venire in manus credas et qua iubentur decurrere. "There is, therefore, a certain mechanical knack, which the Greeks call A)/LOGOj TRIBH/, which enables the hand to go on scribbling, while the eye takes in whole lines at once as it reads, observes the intonations and the stops, and sees what is coming before the reader has articulated to himself what precedes. It is a similar knack which makes possible those miraculous tricks which we see jugglers and masters of sleight of hand perform upon the stage, in such a manner that the spectator can scarcely help believing that the objects which they throw into the air come to hand of their own accord, and run where they are bidden."

How can these tactics be reconciled with his conception of the ideal orator as the good person skilled in speaking? 2. Compare Quintilian's understanding of ethos with Aristotle's.

Quintilian, vol. 1 Welcome to the web site of Watson's Quintilian There being no complete English translation of Quintilian's Institutes of Oratory (besides those published in the Loeb editions ) since the Rev. John Selby Watson published his in 1891, which is now largely inaccessible, this site has been established in order to facilitate access to this translation by browsers. The site offers scanned versions of Watson's translation both in Adobe Acrobat PDF format and in Microsoft Word format Since we are not currently working on Quintilian, we have not taken the time to edit the Word version of the text to ensure the accuracy of the scanning, but we hope that cross reference to the pdf version, which reproduces the Watson text as it actually appears in book form, will make up for this limitation. So far, we have only scanned Volume 1. Volume 2 will be available soon, we hope. Download Adobe Acrobat Reader SITE CONTENTS:

[page 356] Perusal of the bibliographies of the scholarly literature on Quintilian makes it clear that the justly famous Book X of the I. O. has received more than ample attention, but one of the more difficult technical chapters (3, 6), dealing with the doctrine of status, has escaped the specific and individual elucidation which it surely merits. My intention in the present paper is twofold: I. to outline Quintilian's procedure and purpose in recapitulating his predecessors' theories of status, and II. to indicate Quintilian's own thoughts on status and, where necessary, to note certain inconsistencies in Quintilian's position. Hopefully this essay may provide a foundation for further and more detailed studies of Quintilian's views on status and rhetorical theory in general.

This little volume fills a need of long standing, as no general account of Quintilian's life, times and contribution has hitherto existed in English. The book is sensibly broken up into discussions of "back-ground" and, book by book of the Institutio, the matters of education, rhetoric and criticism. The first chapter contains a succinct account of the role of rhetoric and oratory in the Classical world, the life of Quintilian, the historical and cultural ambience of the Flavian era, and Quintilian's professional and literary activity. The running commentary and analysis of the Institutio form the bulk of the study and, for the limited size of the book, is quite thorough. The systematic nature of the education of the orator which Quintilian envisions makes itself nicely felt in Kennedy's linear treatment.

QUINTILIAN: BOOK II
Chapter 1

Boys are not put under the professor of rhetoric early enough; reasons why they should begin to receive instruction from him at an earlier age, 1- 3 The professions of the grammarian and teacher of rhetoric should be in some degree united, 4-13.
4. Let us assign each of these professions its due limits. Let grammar, (which, turning it into a Latin word, they have called literatura, literature,") know its own boundaries, especially as it is so far advanced beyond the humility indicated by its name, to which humility the early grammarians restricted themselves; for, though but weak at its source, yet, having gained strength from the poets and historians,4 it now flows on in a full channel; since, besides the art of speaking correctly, which would otherwise be far from a comprehensive art, it has engrossed the study of almost all the highest departments of learning;
5. and let not rhetoric, to which the power of eloquence has given its name, decline its own duties, or rejoice that the task belonging to itself is appropriated by another; for while it neglects its duties, it is almost expelled from its domain.
6. I would not deny, indeed, that some of those who profess grammar, may make such progress in knowledge as to be able to teach the principles of oratory; but, when they do so, they will be discharging the duties of a rhetorician, and not their own.
