paperback OUT OF PRINT ABOUT THIS BOOK One of Queneau's most highly plotted and complex novels, reminiscent of The Bark-Tree , the cinema screen is the "skin of dreams" and this novel approaches themes of illusion and the real, using Queneau's usual humour and cast of lowlife characters spread across various continents. Jacques l'Aumone, the hero of The Skin of Dreams skin of the title. Behind the slang and comedy lies a richness of meaning which, as usual, makes Queneau's novel impossible to summarise. Raymond Queneau, best known as the author of Zazie in the Metro This excellent translation, done in collaboration with the author, was originally published in 1948.

Queneau used in his novels and poems colloquial speech and phonetic spellings. After World War II his work formed a bridge between the irrational world of Breton and other surrealists and the philosophical 'absurd' of existentialism. '"Relax! Go on, have a drink, that'll make you feel better."
They drank, and Valentin made a face.
"You're certainly the first Frenchman I've ever seen make a face drinking Pernod," said Houssette.
"It's because of all those watsits I caught in the colonies," said Valentin.
"Ought to have had something else, then."
"I wanted to see whether it was still bad for me."'

During his military service in North Africa in 1925 he found out that he did not understand the ordinary language of the ordinary French soldier. Years later he visited Greece and became involved in discussions about the differences between classical and demotic Greek. He saw that modern written French must free itself from the conventions of style, spelling, and vocabulary that date from the sixteenth and seventeenth century. Queneau's first book

17. Scriptorium - Raymond Queneau
Biography, description of major works, links.
http://www.themodernword.com/scriptorium/queneau.html
By Braulio Tavares Raymond Queneau Raymond Queneau's mind could have been described as a room with a fireplace, where a group of Club Stories characters gathered together and talked endlessly among themselves a mathematician, a humorist, a scholar, a linguist, a poet, a detective. For the Scriptorium's purposes I assume that you, dear reader, are not familiar with his work, and this text will try to give you an idea (albeit incomplete) about his ideas, his personality and his writings.
Queneau was born in Le Havre in 1903 and went to Paris when he was 17. For some time he joined André Breton's Surrealist group, but after only a brief stint he dissociated himself. Now, seeing Queneau's work in retrospect, it seems inevitable. The Surrealists tried to achieve a sort of pure expression from the unconscious, without mediation of the author's self-aware "persona." Queneau's texts, on the contrary, are quite deliberate products of the author's conscious mind, of his memory, his intentionality.
Although Queneau's novels give an impression of enormous spontaneity, they were in fact painstakingly conceived in every small detail. He even once remarked that he simply could not leave to hazard the task of determining the number of chapters of a book. Talking about his first novel

Raymond Queneau (1903-1976) spent a good part of his life working at the huge French publishing firm of Gallimard choosing which manuscripts they would publish, and in his free time he became a most interesting author. Queneau participated in the original surrealist group as a young man, then left the group and went on to write in his spare time. He published a regular column in a Paris newspaper for a few years and was involved in the world of the cinema, but he also wrote many novels and essays and much poetry. He belonged to the curious "Collège de 'pataphysique" and was one of the two founders of the "Oulipo" (" Ou vroir de li po tentielle" = "Workshop of Potential Literature"). He is best known for his Les Exercices de style and for Zazie dans le , which Louis Malle recreated as a movie in 1960.

Review Summaries Source Rating Date Reviewer New Statesman John Sturrock The New Yorker John Updike TLS - Return to top of the page - The complete review 's Review Told in the form of a drama, in 74 short chapters (or scenes), the misadventures of Icarus, an unformed innocent, and Hubert, who keeps searching for Icarus in all the wrong places are recounted. There's a great deal of clever literary play here, commentary on both the Aesthetes of the late 1800's and modern fiction, and Queneau has any number of literary tricks up his sleeve. It's all exceptionally well done, with many a twist to it, and a great deal of fun. Barbara Wright's translation also manages to capture the playfulness of the original very well. It is a slight book an entertainment but it is also a very good one. Strongly recommended.
