The Fifth Elephant Hogfather ... Thief of Time Book Excerpts Nightwatch Terry Pratchett Biography - Terry Pratchett Within the fantasy genre Terry Pratchett is the "funny" writer. With his somewhat strange and spectacular Discworld series he has grown to become one of the most acknowledged writers in the world. So if you haven't read any of his books yet, go ahead, try one, and you will definitely be in for a surprise. Terry Pratchett was born in 1948 and lives with his wife Lyn and daughter Rhianna in Somerset. In 1987, after both having worked as a journalist and later as a press officer, he started as a full time author. Although the Discworld series has been his main work, he has also written some science fiction and children's books. Bibliography - Terry Pratchett The Discworld series

ISBN 0-552-14615-3 And now, my shortest review ever! I mean, what can you say about Pratchett? Most people into SF and fantasy seem to like the Discworld stories, and I expect most of his fans will have this by now. I didn't think it was one of his best, being one of the "Witches" stories - I prefer the ones featuring the goings-on in Ankh-Morpork, but it was still quite enjoyable. Also, it doesn't really seem to be making a Point, as some of the novels do (and these are often the best). Still, he has quite a lot of fun with the Discworld version of vampires, who up to now, as far as I can recall, haven't featured in the series. 23 January 2000 This page was last updated on 14/06/00 22:21:15 GMT Daylight Time

67. Classical Association News: Son Of Pratchett And The Classics
Short article about terry pratchett's work, its hidden allusions, and its portrayal of the classical world.
http://www.sas.ac.uk/icls/ClassAss/extracts/pratchett.html
SOME UNREGARDED ASPECTS OF THE RECEPTION OF CLASSICS IN THE 20TH CENTURY or SON OF "TERRY PRATCHETT AND CLASSICS" By Richard Wallace This piece owes its resuscitation (from the effects of the truly unavoidable circumstances which prevented its appearance earlier in the year) to the inspiration of the article by Jessica Yates in the last issue of CA News, together with some very gentle (but inexorably persuasive) arm-twisting by the Editor. First I will not begin with an apology. The novels of Terry Pratchett are, from beginning to end, fun. People enjoy them. Occasionally they may learn from them, but mostly they just enjoy them. They are not High Art or even (probably) Literature. Just fun. But no discipline which makes the plays of Plautus set-books in university courses, or thinks that Petronius is a suitable subject for learned academic articles, is in any position to be snooty about popular literature. Classics is perhaps the broadest, most liberal, and most tolerant of all academic subjects; that is surely our greatest strength, and that is why I make no apologies for inviting you to consider what we can learn from Terry Pratchett. I was introduced to his work by my younger daughter, who gave me some of the earlier novels in his Discworld series to read when I was suffering from a dose of flu. This was probably a good way to start. The series seems to have begun as a sort of spoof (a word Pratchett seems to prefer to "parody") on "sword and sorcery" fantasy novels (and if ever a genre was ripe for parody, this is it). I quite enjoyed them, but the series only really began to take off for me with the third novel, Equal Rites, when it took on a life of its own, broke free from the sci-fi/fantasy genre and began to expand within a much wider framework of social and cultural reference. Pratchett uses the usual techniques of writers of spoofs: bathos; humorous anachronism; retelling stories as they would "really" have happened; and so on. Though he changes names and details to distance his narrative from sober reality, the reader can usually see what he is getting at.

NIGHT WATCH

THE LAST HERO: A Discworld Fable

Terry Pratchett
BIO
Terry Pratchett published his first story when he was thirteen and had his first commercial sale four years later. His first novel, a humorous fantasy entitled THE CARPET PEOPLE, appeared in 1971 from the HarperCollins Colin Smythe. Before turning to literary writing full-time, he worked for many years as a journalist and press officer. His first book in the Discworld series, THE COLOR OF MAGIC , appeared in 1983. Since that time he has written an additional twenty-five Discworld novels. A non-Discworld book, GOOD OMENS, his 1990 collaboration with Neil Gaiman, has been a long-time best-seller as well. He has also written two science fiction novels and seven for younger readers. Regarded as one of the most significant contemporary English-language satirists, Pratchett received the British Fantasy Award for best novel (PYRAMIDS), in 1989, was named an Officer of the British Empire "for services to literature" in the Queen's Birthday Honours of 1998, and received an honorary Doctor of Letters degree from the University of Warwick in 1999. His acclaimed novels have sold more than 21 million copies worldwide and have been translated into 27 languages. Terry Pratchett lives in England with his family, and spends most days at his computer, writing. Back to top.

    Terry Pratchett:
    Guilty of Literature
edited by Andrew M. Butler, Edward James
    and Farah Mendlesohn
introduction by David Langford cover by Josh Kirby
Terry Pratchett, who has more range than Wodehouse and is a better craftsman than Leacock, is a master builder: an observer, a recorder of his times, an explainer, and, like all good writers, an obsessive, driven maniac on the side. It's about time he got his due.
Neil Gaiman In creating his Discworld, Terry Pratchett has created a proper venue for the tournament of return; and with each new title it is Spring. [...] The players disappear, at dusk, into air, into thin air; and with the dawn return. They are creatures of Comedy. Their ties to the world we know the incipits which engender them from the books of this world are never closed. Under their varying garbs, they are free. [...] And that may be the secret of Terry Pratchett's success. We love the jokes we ride the rollercoasters of slapstick with joy and each time we hope Cinderella will find her slipper. But the true secret of Discworld is that it has remained free. Free of the dangerous pieties of transformative Healing. Free, in the end, of fantasy.
John Clute Whatever people tell you, the comic novels of Terry Pratchett are nothing like those of P.G. Wodehouse, Douglas Adams, or J.R.R. Tolkien. Antics in a burlesque antiquity, with a splash of satire and a streak of slapstick, they are much closer to the adventures of Asterix the Gaul persistently amusing, goodhearted and shrewd.

    Terry Pratchett Interview
    You are visitor number
Terry at the interview In 1994 Terry Pratchett came to Watford to do a book signing at the same time that I was in the sixth form working on a school newspaper. Phone calls were made and meetings arranged and here are the results. Now, two years on Terry is still my favourite author and he's even more famous - I recently saw a house sized poster advertising his books on the London underground. The interview below is in it's entirety and exactly as it was recorded. Looking back on it there is a strong focus on the Discworld, so for those of you who prefer his other books, sorry. As it is very roughly in sections on different subjects I have added links to the various sections for the impatient.
  • Becoming a writer.
  • The Discworld
  • Discworld Offshoots
  • Collaborators and Influences
How did you become a writer? I wrote a story and sent it off to a magazine and they paid me some money. It was as simple as that; I mean there wasn't any kind of agonizing I just did it. Was writing something you had in mind from early on?

    Why Gandalf Never Married
    1985 talk by Terry Pratchett
UKSFA Home I want to talk about magic, how magic is portrayed in fantasy, how fantasy literature has in fact contributed to a very distinct image of magic, and perhaps most importantly how the Western world in general has come to accept a very precise and extremely suspect image of magic users. I'd better say at the start that I don't actually believe in magic any more than I believe in astrology, because I'm a Taurean and we don't go in for all that weirdo occult stuff. But a couple of years ago I wrote a book called The Colour of Magic . It had some boffo laughs. It was an attempt to do for the classical fantasy universe what Blazing Saddles did for Westerns. It was also my tribute to twenty-five years of fantasy reading, which started when I was thirteen and read Lord of the Rings in 25 hours. That damn book was a halfbrick in the path of the bicycle of my life. I started reading fantasy books at the kind of speed you can only manage in your early teens. I panted for the stuff. I had a deprived childhood, you see. I had lots of other kids to play with and my parents bought me outdoor toys and refused to ill-treat me, so it never occurred to me to seek solitary consolation with a good book.

Commander Vimes sets off to work while anticipating the arrival of his first child. A serial killer is on the loose, having already killed two coppers, and Vimes and his men are hot on his trail. Finally, the killer Carcer is cornered on the roof of Unseen University. But an unexpected thunderstorm and the pent-up magic above the University causes Vimes and his prisoner to be shifted backward in time. When Vimes finally regains consciousness, he finds himself in an Ankh-Morpork that has no Vetinari ruling it with an iron grip and a young Samuel Vimes new to the police force. Just as he's figured this out he finds himself with the monks who monitor time. They explain that Vimes must make sure that his younger self ends up as the same Sam Vimes in the future or he may disappear completely.
