THE VAMPYRE c 1819 by Dr. John William Polidori John Polidori was Lord Byron's personal physician during his travels in Europe, and had the good fortune to be present at the famous ghost-story sessions with Byron and the Shelleys at the Villa Diodati. The Vampyre was the first vampire story in English fiction, and Polidori based the antagonist on his friend, Lord Byron, renaming the character "Lord Ruthven" as a snide in-joke. The Vampyre was published in the April 1819 issue of New Monthly Magazine . Much to both his and Byron's chagrin, The Vampyre was released as a new work by Byron. It happened that in the midst of the dissipations attendant upon London winter, there appeared at the various parties of the leaders of the ton Aubrey's weakness increased; the effusion of blood produced symptoms of the near approach of death. He desired his sister's guardians might be called, and when the midnight hour had struck, he related composedly what the reader has perused he died immediately after. The guardians hastened to protect Miss Aubrey; but when they arrived, it was too late. Lord Ruthven had disappeared, and Aubrey's sister had glutted the thirst of a VAMPYRE!
