George Plimpton: A Most American Boswell by Jonathan Bing 11/17/97
George Plimpton, the protean journalist, editor and professional dilettante, towers over the galleys and audio cassettes amassed on his desk at the Paris Review and shouts amiably into the phone: "Anne, bring me a Python. One of the longer ones."

ARTIST BIOGRAPHY George Plimpton To call George Plimpton merely an actor is woefully inadequate. Plimpton has also been a bullfighter, an orchestra conductor, a baseball and football player, a boxer, a circus performer and a tennis pro. He has indulged in each of these activities precisely once. George Plimpton's principal career was writing, something he pursued while at Harvard (he was an editor of the Harvard Lampoon) and while serving on the editing staff of Paris Review in the '50s and Horizon and Sports Illustrated in the '60s. Early in his career, Plimpton determined that the best way to write with expertise on a subject was through first-hand experience. Thus he fought bulls in Spain with Ernest Hemingway , played football with the Detroit Lions, was matched with tennis champ Pancho Gonzalez and bridge expert Osward Jacoby, and survived a few rounds with champion boxer Archie Moore. And he acted. He was a Bedouin extra in Lawrence of Arabia (1962), a bit player in

Caption Contest: What is George Plimpton Saying?
When we here at Bully saw the photo to the left of writer George Plimpton, we couldn't help but laugh our asses off. There's just something incredibly funny about the man who edited the Paris Review and wrote numerous books, known for his astute rhetoric and ideas, standing there in a sport jacket and sweater while drinking a can of Miller High-Life beer. As our own Kevin Kosar put it, a perfect caricature of Ben Franklin, the original American barbarian sophisticate.
Immediately we started making up all sorts of lines for Plimpton to utter, such as: "Yes, well, I was in Paris editing a volume of the collected poems of Olivetti D'Nish, when a call came from Arthur Miller. He was working on a new play, but had run into a plot hitch that he couldn't repair. So...hmmm...there's nothing quite like a luke warm Miller is there?" or "I think it was Truman Capote who was quoted as saying that shotgunning Miller is far preferable to say Schlitz or Blatz."
Not wanting to hog all the fun for ourselves, we decided to turn it into a contest. Go ahead and e-mail your suggestions as to what witty remark Plimpton might provide while drinking a can of Miller to

There's just something incredibly funny about a man who edited the Paris Review and wrote numerous books, known for his astute rhetoric and ideas, standing there in a sport jacket and sweater while drinking a can of Miller.
So we turned it into a contest and asked our readers to come up with some quotes as to what Plimpton might say right at that moment. The contest is still open so go ahead and e-mail your suggestions as to what witty remark Plimpton might provide while drinking a can of Miller to info@bullymag.com. We'll pick the best three, publish them in the next issue, and give the winners a Free CD from our giveaway list.
Here's some of the latest entries:
"Before 9 A.M., I prefer sherry, or, perhaps Claret. This, though, will do."
- F. Sot Fitzgerald
"Yes, you see when I was in Paris I really needed some inspiration so I started smoking... Wait, is this the can that you pissed in on the ride over? Oh well, it still tastes pretty damn good. Anyway as I was saying..."
- Richard Downey
I think he has a look on his face that say," Ah shit! Was that a fart or a fizzle?" *

I wanted to drop you a note thanking you for the lovely get well gift. The teddy bear is most cuddly and brings me great comfort during the worst times.
The doctors say the pull is "massive" and that apparently the muscle of the groin region simply "folded up like a window shade." Indeed, as you say in your card, it is fortunate that my screams were drowned out by those of your devoted following (justifiably) hailing your every move, for the journalist, even one who gets so close to his subjects as I do, should never become the focus of the event himself.
I have made space in the Review for your interview. I feel it is the proper time to expand our borders beyond poets and writers and critics to include other important artists such as yourself. I would conduct the interview myself, but I fear that the Vicodin (as pleasurable as it is) has left my mind too dulled to do the work justice. Rushdie has stepped forth and volunteered. We shall see...

HOME RUN
edited by George Plimpton

Harcourt
Nonfiction
ISBN: 0156011549
The home run is the most dramatic way to send fans into fits of ecstasy or agony. With one swing of the bat, a hero is born, either for the moment or for posterity.
Homer heaven can come on a single swing under spectacular circumstances, such as Bobby Thomson's "shot heard 'round the world" against the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1951; a season-long drive, like Mark McGwire's ascendancy to the single season home run crown; or a lifetime of achievement, such as joining the elite 500-home run club.
Since the dinger, the tater, the bomb, and all the other euphemisms for a home run are so exciting, it follows that some of the most compelling baseball writing concentrates on the four-bagger. George Plimpton has amassed such a collection from some of the most famous scribes - and not just sports writers - in the simply titled HOME RUN.
Among the non-sports literati are Bernard Malamud, John Updike, Garrison Keillor, and Don DeLillo. The sportswriter team counts Red Smith, Roger Angell, and Grantland Rice among its roster.

George Plimpton is known for doing those things that the rest of us only dream about. Playing quarterback for the Detroit Lions, basketball for the Boston Celtics, hockey for the Boston Bruins, percussion with the New York Philharmonic and flying on a trapeze for the Clyde Beatty-Cole Brothers Circus are but a few of the professional worlds he has explored. Plimpton has used these and other similarly interesting experiences as the basis for his many books and magazine articles.
A native of New York City, Plimpton has degrees from Harvard University and King's College, Cambridge University. In 1953 he founded The Paris Review , a literary quarterly of which he is still editor. He has taught at Barnard College and has been associate editor at both Horizon Magazine and Harper's Magazine . Truman Capote bio dull and awful
    By HEATHER MALLICK Toronto Sun
TRUMAN CAPOTE: IN WHICH VARIOUS FRIENDS, ENEMIES, ACQUAINTANCES, AND DETRACTORS RECALL HIS TURBULENT CAREER George Plimpton
    (Doubleday)
Idols fall to the ground. Other people's idols, that is.
The American writer George Plimpton has assembled another "oral biography." (It sounds dental, doesn't it? You bite down hard and then you gag.) What it means is he gets a bunch of articulate types to talk about a celebrity, edits it down and gets a book out of it. Plimpton did this before, with the life story of Edie Sedgwick, a young Andy Warhol acolyte. It was fascinating, despite the fact that Sedgwick never did a damn thing in her life except make black tights stylish and die of a drug overdose. His co-editor was Jean Stein. How could Edie have been so fine and this biography of Truman Capote be so bad? Could Stein have done all the work? Might Plimpton himself be a fraud?
Speaking of frauds, it now appears Truman Capote made up a lot of his "ground-breaking" fictionally told biography, In Cold Blood. I never understood why anyone admired it to begin with and have always assumed the early Sixties were so boring that any reasonably competent true crime novel would be a best-seller. Perhaps I am wrong; I admit I am outnumbered.

By living, training and scrimmaging with the Detroit Lions, Plimpton was able to get the athletes to tell him the sort of things they had never divulged to sports writers of the ordinary sort. Plimpton played football very poorly, but he was admitted to the fraternity, as it were, because he had entered the arena himself and taken his punishment. The Lions' star defensive tackle, Alex Karras, told Plimpton how he psyched himself up during games by imagining that the opposing quarterback was the sort of person he hated most, the sort that didn't smoke, drink or swear, the clean-cut type who came from an Eastern school and had a "hoity-toity voice". John Gordy, who blocked for the passer on offense, told Plimpton how he psyched himself up by pretending that the passer was his own six-month-old son asleep in his bassinet with monsters rushing in trying to destroy him. Plimpton always begins his reporting stints in a very low key, retiring to the far corner at first, not coming on and not asking questions. Only the marginal players, the players worried about making the squad at all, have ever seemed to resent his presence. Plimpton takes notes as often as he can, and while working on
