HUTCHINSON ENCYCLOPEDIA Peacock, Thomas Love English satirical novelist and poet. His unique whimsical novels are full of paradox, prejudice, curious learning, and witty dialogue, interspersed with occasional poems, and he satirizes contemporary ideas, outlooks, and attitudes in a prevailing comic tone. They include Headlong Hall Melincourt (1817), and Nightmare Abbey (1818), which has very little plot, consisting almost entirely of conversation expressing points of view on contemporary controversies and society. He published two romances, Maid Marian (1822) and Misfortunes of Elphin (1829), but returned to the form of Headlong Hall with his last and best novels, Crotchet Castle (1831) and Gryll Grange (1860). These mature works are written with greater assurance and are less concerned with purely contemporary affairs.

Chapter I Now come ye for peace here, or come ye for war? Scott. "Sweet Matilda," said the earl, "did you give your love to the Earl of Huntingdon, whose lands touch the Ouse and the Trent, or to Robert Fitz-Ooth, the son of his mother?" "Neither to the earl nor his earldom," answered Matilda firmly, "but to Robert Fitz-Ooth and his love." "That I well knew," said the earl; "and though the ceremony be incomplete, we are not the less married in the eye of my only saint, our Lady, who will yet bring us together. Lord Fitzwater, to your care, for the present, I commit your daughter.Nay, sweet Matilda, part we must for a while; but we will soon meet under brighter skies, and be this the seal of our faith." At length, through the midst of the internal confusion, the earl, by the help of his good sword, the staunch valour of his men, and the blessing of the Virgin, fought his way to the chapel-gate his bowmen closed him inhe vaulted into his saddle, clapped spurs to his horse, rallied his men on the first eminence, and exchanged his sword for a bow and arrow, with which he did old execution among the pursuers, who at last thought it most expedient to desist from offensive warfare, and to retreat into the abbey, where, in the king's name, they broached a pipe of the best wine, and attached all the venison in the larder, having first carefully unpacked the tuft of friars, and set the fallen abbot on his legs.

Crotchet Castle
by Thomas Love Peacock
There's a dark lantern of the spirit,
Which none see by but those who bear it,
That makes them in the dark see visions
And hag themselves with apparitions,
Find racks for their own minds, and vaunt
Of their own misery and want. - BUTLER MATTHEW. Oh! it's your only fine humour, sir. Your true melancholy breeds your perfect fine wit, sir. I am melancholy myself, divers times, sir; and then do I no more but take pen and paper presently, and overflow you half a score or a dozen of sonnets at a sitting.
STEPHEN. Truly, sir, and I love such things out of measure.
MATTHEW. Why, I pray you, sir, make use of my study; it's at your service.
STEPHEN. I thank you, sir, I shall be bold, I warrant you. Have you a stool there, to be melancholy upon? -BEN JOHNSON, Every Man in his Humour, Act 3, Sc. 1

English novelist and poet who satirized the political and cultural scene of his time. Usually Peacock assembled his characters in a country house, where they exchange opinions over a dinner table in a merry atmosphere. The 'Socratic dialogues' are lightened by songs, hilarious and extravagant episodes, and romantic love-plots. Beyond the sea, beyond the sea,
My heart is gone, far, far from me;
And ever on its track will flee My thoughts, my dreams, beyond the sea.
(from Crotchet Castle, 1831) Thomas Love Peacock was born in Weymouth, Dorset, the only son of a London glass merchant, who died in 1788. Peacock's grandfather was a master in the Royal Navy, and the young Thomas Love was brought up by his mother at Chertsey in his grandfather's house. Peacock was educated at a private school in Englefield Green. His formal schooling in Greek, Latin, and French ended before he was 13, but he read omnivorously throughout his life in five languages. In 1812 Peacock met Percy Bysshe Shelley (1792-1822), who greatly inspired his writing, and remained a close friend throughout his life. Through Shelley, Peacock was drawn into a wider literary circle, but knowledge of classical literature also helped the younger poet. Peacock's sceptical essay

My thoughts by night are often filled
With visions false as fair:
For in the past alone, I build
My castles in the air.
Castles in the Air (st. 1) [ Visions In one of those beautiful valleys, through which the Thames (not yet polluted by the tide, the scouring of cities, or even the minor defilement of the sandy streams of Surrey), rolls a clear flood through flowery meadows, under the shade of old beech woods, and the smooth glossy greensward of the chalk hills (which pour into it their tributary rivulets, as pure and pellucid as the fountain of Bandusium, or the wells of Scamander, by which the wives and daughters of the Trojans washed their splendid garments in the days of peace, before the coming of the Greeks); in one of those beautiful valleys, on a bold round-surfaced lawn, spotted with junipers, that opened itself in the bosom of an old wood, which rose with a steep, but not precipitous ascent, from the river to the summit of the hill, stood the castellated villa of a retired citizen. Love and Age
By Thomas Love Peacock
I PLAY'D with you 'mid cowslips blowing,
When I was six and you were four;
When garlands weaving, flower-balls throwing,
Were pleasures soon to please no more.
Through groves and meads, o'er grass and heather,
With little playmates, to and fro, We wander'd hand in hand together; But that was sixty years ago. You grew a lovely roseate maiden, And still our early love was strong; Still with no care our days were laden, They glided joyously along; And I did love you very dearly, How dearly words want power to show; I thought your heart was touch'd as nearly; But that was fifty years ago. Then other lovers came around you, Your beauty grew from year to year, And many a splendid circle found you The centre of its glimmering sphere. I saw you then, first vows forsaking, On rank and wealth your hand bestow;

SEAMEN three! What men be ye?
Gotham's three wise men we be.
Whither in your bowl so free?
To rake the moon from out the sea.
The bowl goes trim. The moon doth shine.
And our ballast is old wine. And your ballast is old wine. Who art thou, so fast adrift? I am he they call Old Care. Here on board we will thee lift. No: I may not enter there. Wherefore so? 'Tis Jove's decree, In a bowl Care may not be. In a bowl Care may not be. Fear ye not the waves that roll? No: in charmed bowl we swim. What the charm that floats the bowl?
