LESELUST eigene Meinung schreiben Tim Parks - Schicksal
Roman. Antje Kunstmann, 281 Seiten
Ersch.

About the Book About the Author Order the Book
    ABOUT THE BOOK
Described by the late poet and essayist Joseph Brodsky as "the best British author writing today," Tim Parks is as prolific a journalist, critic, and translator as he is a novelist. In Understanding Tim Parks, Gillian Fenwick explores Parks's body of work and maintains that Parks is the epitome of the modern man of letters. Loving Roger, Home Thoughts, and Family Planning Parks's writing crosses genres as well as international boundaries. Fenwick argues that Parks's Italian sojourn of the past twenty years has brought a richness to his work. Wanting no part of saccharine treatments of la dolce vita, Parks has in Italian Neighbours and An Italian Education Shear and Europa, which are set on the Continent and feature characters of several European nationalities, capture his enlarged European scope. From Parks's novels and nonfiction books to his translations and journalism, Fenwick reckons with Parks's full literary range and sheds light on the work of a versatile English writer whose international recognition is steadily growing.

If Brahma is a more endearing creator than Jehovah it is because he wasn't pleased with what he had made. He found the world dull and dusty. Death was the answer, suggested Siva. Living forever, people were bored. A time-limit would galvanize, give dignity. But in that case some way of replacing the population would have to be found. Brahma brought together a few trusted fellows and explained what was required. The pleasure took them by surprise. What was that for? To put a fresh shine on the world, they were told. Otherwise it might get dusty again... I'm always taken aback when people talk about the eroticism of food and drink, of sunbathing and massage. This is mere sensuality. Or avoiding the issue. No experience even remotely compares with true eros, with long and lavish love-making. It is perfectly understandable that people should imagine its having been tacked on to creation afterwards, so extravagant is the pleasure it brings, so far beyond what is necessary. Never does the world seem so freshly painted, so brightly enamelled, so new, for heaven's sake, as after the best sex. But, alas, depending on where you're up to in life, it may be full of new complications too. A lesser authority than Brahma's would have issued a health-warning. Over billiards and beer a friend is explaining why he is leaving his wife and two children. He's playing with unusual speed and precision. His eyes are brighter than the beer could account for. 'And the girl is twenty-three,' he explains. French. So intelligent. 'Intelligently pert breasts?' I enquire, 'Perceptively warm thighs?' He laughs. He is deliriously proud, confused, unhappy. 'I feel I was never really in love with my wife,' he says.

What the gods most required of man was recognition. But it wasn't enough to extort this with divine manifestations. Already the first to assume human forms, the Olympians complicated matters by appearing as beggars, or strangers: Zeus at the court of Lycaon, Dionysus at the house of Icarius. Certainly it's a tough proposition to treat every panhandler as if he might be God. Clearly one was only a step away from the wearisome modern demand that one recognize the divinity in all men. In this respect it has to be granted that writers are more accommodating. Or you could say rather that they take fewer risks: they rarely turn up without a visiting card. So it was that the day I met V.S.Naipaul his books were everywhere in evidence. Unrecognized, the gods wreaked the most appalling revenge. But Naipaul had long gone beyond that. He had been awarded the Commonwealth Prize for Literature, hence was firmly placed in the Pantheon. At the conference, where he talked about his work, and then the celebratory lunch where we sat opposite each other, he expressed eloquent opinions on racism and evil authority, earnest comments on his native Trinidad. But what was most evident was how much he was revelling in the buzz of recognition, a god listening to the chatter of human worship. I found him entirely charming. And at the same time couldn't help remarking that in all the writers I have met there is this extraordinary gap between what their work appears to be about - impeccably commendable - and the driving impulse behind it, an unslakable thirst for recognition.

The team was formed almost a century ago in Verona's poshest school, the Liceo Classico Maffei. The game was still new to this part of the world. Preparing for their first match, the players didn't know what to call themselves. Then the Greek teacher, with an extraordinary sense of what football was to become - at least in Italy - suggested the name Hellas, the Greek word for patria , homeland, country. Your team becomes the expression of the community you belong to, the group that gives you your identity. And in Italy this homeland can only be local. "Did you watch the national team last night?" I ask a sports journalist. "No," he replies, and explains, "I'm a Brescia supporter."
