Thomas Paine
(Redirected from Tom Paine Thomas Paine January 29 June 8 ) was an American Founding Father . As a pamphleteer, Paine elucidated the Patriot cause and gave direction to the American Revolution , causing his readers to think about the issues in terms of fundamental principles. English by birth, Paine was raised in Norfolk among farmers and other common people. His formal education was minimal. His major accomplishment as a young man was to be fired twice in four years from his job as collector of excise taxes. His first recorded writing was a short article in favour of better salaries and working conditions. His mother was a member of the Church of England , and his father was a Quaker . There has been some historians who have argued he was strongly influenced in his views by his father. Paine's advocated a liberal world view, which was radical at the time. He had no use for

TOM PAINE ON DEATH A LETTER TO ANDREW DEAN FROM THOMAS PAINE I received your friendly letter, for which I am obliged to you. It is three weeks ago today (Sunday, August fifteenth), that I was struck with a fit of apoplexy, that deprived me of all sense and motion. I had neither pulse nor breathing, and the people about me supposed me dead. I had felt exceedingly well that day, and had just taken a slice of bread and butter for supper, and was going to bed. The fit took me on the stairs, as suddenly as if I had been shot through the head; and I got so very much hurt by the fall, that I have not been able to get in and out of bed since that day, otherwise than being lifted out in a blanket, by two persons; yet all this while my mental faculties have remained as perfect a I ever enjoyed them. I consider the scene I have passed through as an experiment on dying, and I find that death has no terrors for me. As to the people called Christians, they have no evidence that their religion is true. There is no more proof that the Bible is the Word of God, than that the Koran of Mahomet is the Word of God. It is education makes all the difference. Man, before he begins to think for himself, is as much the child of habits in Creeds as he is in plowing and sowing. Yet creeds, like opinions, prove nothing.

WHO WAS TOM PAINE?
By Howard Fast
"THERE is not an idea in it (the Declaration of Independence) but what had been hackneyed in Congress for two years before. . . ." So wrote the Federalist John Adams.
Jefferson, the well-loved and trusted leader of the democratic forces in America, had been for some time the foremost target of the anti-democratic Federalists. He knew how to take mudslinging; quietly, he answered:
"I did not consider it as any part of my charge to invent new ideas altogether and to offer no sentiment which had never been expressed before. Not to find out new principles, or new arguments, never before thought of, not merely to say things which had never been said before; but to place before mankind the common sense of the subject. Neither aiming at originality of principles or sentiments, it was intended to be an expression of the American mind
The italics are mine; but it is no accident that, so many years after, Jefferson refers to the ideas incorporated into the Declaration of Independence as common sense the title of Paine's first and far-reaching major work. And the phrase "expression of the American mind" is one of the most important clues, not only to the writings of Paine and Jefferson, but to the whole democratic system that sprang from their times.

CITIZEN TOM PAINE
Howard Fast's novel about an immortal American who "scorched a message on the minds of men."
"Damned be his fame, and lasting his shame-"
Thus runs one line of a horrible bit of doggerel set going against Paine by his enemies in America. It sticks in the mind. Some would still have it that way-today's inheritors of the hatred of the people, the lineal descendants of Tom Paine's enemies. The name of Paine means much the same thing to fascists as it did to the organizers of counter-revolution in the last quarter of the eighteenth century. But the works of Tom Paine (the words and the deeds) have survived the innumerable assaults on the man. When Paine spoke, he spoke as a citizen of the worldthe new world: the voice of the common man was his conscious utterance. And that fact is something which cannot be howled down, for the people do not readily forget the great men who fought in the historic battles for their freedom. They know whom to damn, and whose fame is lasting!
Among the cabal which has gathered against Paine the chief point of attack has been his character, particularly certain facts about his life which have been magnified and distorted with the object of deflecting attention from his great revolutionary vision and his immortal services to our country. This line of attack began in Paine's own lifetime and reached a climax of personal persecution after the printing of

T
HOMAS PAINE (1737-1809), writer and revolutionary, wrote the populist pamphlet, Common Sense, a clarion call for American independence and democracy. Driven by desire for freeedom and justice, Paine's thinking reflected French and English writers like Rousseau, Burke, Locke, others in the "philosoph" movement, today called The Enlightenment. Paine published Common Sense in January 1776, six months before the Continental Congress declared independence from Britain. Of 2.5 million souls living in the 13 colonies, almost 500,000 bought copies of the pamphlet, suggesting the mood of the times. George Washington reportedly was persuaded by the essay that the best solution to the crisis with England was recanting allegiance to the crown atop a mad king's head. Jefferson reportedly was inspired by Common Sense when writing the Declaration of Independence.

COMMON SENSE
by
THOMAS PAINE
The Anglo-American writer and political theorist Thomas Paine (1737-1809) boldly spoke out for social and political reforms, and played an active role in the American War of Independence. In his great and highly influential pamphlet Common Sense, published in January 1776, was the first bold, explicit assault on monarchical rule, and the first advocacy of the American colonies' independence from Britain. Written in clear language, Common Sense laid out how an independent government could be established and controlled by the people, and how rich and poor alike could share equally in privileges and duties. It was Paine's enlightened contention that in order to ensure liberty, no special preferments should be attached to any one religious sect, but that religious diversity should be respected.

Tom Paine: The Man Who Inspired the United States War of Liberation
January 1995
Hans Peterson recently presented a widely acclaimed one-hour drama of the life of Tom Paine on local PBS television stations. He is a well-known local radio personality. His presentation to The Humanists of Utah contained much of the same material. Thomas Paine was one of the most admired and respected men in America in 1776. Twenty years later, he was one of the most hated and vilified men in the country. What happened? He spoke his mind. Without hesitation, without spin, without polls, without compromise. All of you know two things that Tom Paine wrote. The first I will share with you in just a moment. They are eight words that you hear once a year but probably don't focus on the man who said it. The man who gave our country its official name died alone, shunned and despised, in a seedy hotel in New York City. During the Revolutionary War, almost every American soldier carried a copy of a pamphlet by Paine in his pocket. At George Washington's orders, his officers would read these words by Thomas Paine to the soldiers before a battle: "Oh, the summer soldier and the sunshine patriot, will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of his country. Tyranny, like hell, is not easily conquered. Yet we have this consolation with us: The harder the conflict the more glorious the triumph."

Many years ago, before I came to my senses and left public education for good, I was teaching on a college campus when one of the administrators approached me and asked the topic of my lecture that day. "Tom Paine and the Rights of Man ," I told him. The administrator sneered, managed a look of utter contempt, and asked, "Do you mean to tell me that you are still defiling the minds of our students with the lightweight works of that filthy little atheist?" Thinking of Rousseau's comment that the Holy Roman Empire was an appropriate title except that it was neither holy, nor Roman, nor an empire, I responded, "Your description of Paine is correct except that he was not lightweight, little, filthy, nor an atheist."
