George Orwell *June 25, 1903 Motihari - India + January 21, 1950 London - GB The British author George Orwell, pen name for Eric Blair , achieved prominence in the late 1940's as the author of two brilliant satires. He wrote documentaries , essays, and criticism during the 1930's and later established him as one of the most important and influential voices of the century. "On each landing, opposite the lift shaft, the poster with the enormous face gazed down from the wall. It was one of these pictures which are so contrived that the eyes follow you about when you move BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU, the caption beneath ran." - from Nineteen Eighty-Four

Politics and the English Language
M ost people who bother with the matter at all would admit that the English language is in a bad way, but it is generally assumed that we cannot by conscious action do anything about it. Our civilization is decadent and our language so the argument runs must inevitably share in the general collapse. It follows that any struggle against the abuse of language is a sentimental archaism, like preferring candles to electric light or hansom cabs to aeroplanes. Underneath this lies the half-conscious belief that language is a natural growth and not an instrument which we shape for our own purposes. These five passages have not been picked out because they are especially bad I could have quoted far worse if I had chosen but because they illustrate various of the mental vices from which we now suffer. They are a little below the average, but are fairly representative examples. I number them so that I can refer back to them when necessary:
  • I am not, indeed, sure whether it is not true to say that the Milton who once seemed not unlike a seventeenth-century Shelley had not become, out of an experience ever more bitter in each year, more alien [sic] to the founder of that Jesuit sect which nothing could induce him to tolerate.

The Only Heir Scarcely Knew his Adoptive Father.
by People Weekly. People Weekly , Jan 9, 1984 . His pastimes are playing squash, tending roses and attending Scottish country dance classes. He earns his living writing sales manuals. Few know that the unassuming Richard Blair is George Orwell's adopted son and sole beneficiary. "It's not something I talk about much," says Blair. "If my name were Orwell, there would be a problem. I'm grateful it isn't." Blair has only fragmentary memories of the father who washed and dressed him and made him crude wooden toys. When he talks about his father's work, he praises its simplicity: "When asked why he made pigs the villains in Animal Farm, he said it was because he didn't like pigs." Since his stepmother's death in 1980, Blair, who makes $15,000 a year writing for a farm-equipment company, stands to inherit the remainder of Orwell's estate. Depending on claims, it could be worth from "absolutely nothing" to "something in six figures." Whatever the amount, it's not likely to alter his quiet life-style, though he allows he might buy the farm he's always wanted. "George never minded what I'd do," he says, "so long as it was what I wanted." Back to Recent Essays

    Biography of George Orwell
George Orwell was born Eric Arthur Blair on June 25, 1903, in Motihari, India. The Blair¹s were relatively prosperous civil servants, working in India on behalf of the British Empire. Blair would later describe his family¹s socioeconomic status as "lower-upper middle class," on comment on the extraordinary degree to which British citizens in India depended on the Empire for their livelihood; though the Blair were able to live quite comfortably in India, they had none of the physical assets or independent investments that would have been enjoyed by their class in England proper. Despite this factor, Ida Blair moved back to England in 1904 with Eric and his older sister Marjorie so that they could be brought up in a more traditional Christian environment. In England, Blair entered the public school system, and was admitted to Eton College in 1917. For most students of this era, Eton led directly to higher education at a university, often Oxford or Cambridge. Blair shunned further formal schooling, and after leaving Eton in 1921, returned to India in 1922 to join the Indian Imperial Police. This work gave Blair his first real experiences with the poor and downtrodden whom he would later champion, and unhappy with the his position as the "hand of the oppressor," Blair resigned from the police force in 1927, returning to England that same year.

Another similarity is the Hate Room, where the general populace is given an object for all its pent-up aggression and frustration. Are Bin Laden, Saddam Hussein, and whoever else we are served up on a plate to hate, just our national Hate Room? How much control do we actually have over our own emotions and where they are directed? To put it another way, how much dignity have we lost? A dignified populace at home with its own feelings and in control of its own thoughts makes a society like '1984', or 2003, impossible from the outset.

How easy would it be, if it were so black and white as Orwell makes his 1984 appear to be. How easy would it be to accept if we were told that we were being watched by this devices line of sight, and listening devices were placed everywhere. How obvious would it be if we were to be blatantly subjected to forced indoctrination in the harshest of manors. How easy would it be to sell freedom and responsibility for comfort when we were told we were doing that.

Road to Wigan Pier .
