Omar Khayyam Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam Introduction "Ah, make the most of what we yet may spend, Before we too into the Dust descend; Dust into Dust, and under Dust, to lie, Sans Wine, sans Song, sans Singer, and- sans End!" ( The Rubaiyat , XXIII) Omar Khayyam was born in Nishapur, Persia (now Iran) on 18 May 1040 although this is only a purported date and some claim that it was 1023. He studied geometry and astronomy and in Samarkand worked for the chief magistrate and the ruler of Bokhara, Shamsolmolk Nasr. He went on to enter the service of Saljuq Sultan Malekshah (who ruled between 1072 and 1092). He also traveled to Mecca and Baghdad before returning to Nishapur. With his great expertise in the study of the stars he helped to construct an observatory and compile a set of astronomical tables upon which was based a new calendar era. As such Khayyam’s contemporary reputation was as a scientist. Of the scientific works he produced some still survive. He died in December 1131, but again some historians have given a different date: 1123. Khayyam’s times were hazardous ones due to the Saljuq Turks who were finishing off their infiltration of Iran, Mesopotamia and Asia Minor when he was young and by the time he died they were completing their empire stretching from the River Oxus to Syria. In these turbulent times Khayyam’s verse gives the reader a sense of logic and clarity. The poems of

OMAR AL-KHAYYAM (1044-1123 C.E.) Algebra would seem to rank first among the fields to which he contributed. He made an attempt to classify most algebraic equations, including the third degree equations and, in fact, offered solutions for a number of them. This includes geometric solutions of cubic equations and partial geometric solutions of most other equations. His book Maqalat fi al-Jabr wa al-Muqabila is a master- piece on algebra and has great importance in the development of algebra. His remarkable classification of equations is based on the complexity of the equations, as the higher the degree of an equation, the more terms, or combinations of terms, it will contain. Thus, Khayyam recognizes 13 different forms of cubic equatlon. His method of solving equations is largely geometrical and depends upon an ingenious selection of proper conics. He also developed the binomial expansion when the exponent is a positive integer. In fact, he has been considered to be the first to find the binomial theorem and determine binomial coefficients. In geometry, he studied generalities of Euclid and contributed to the theory of parallel lines. The Saljuq Sultan, Malikshah Jalal al-Din, called him to the new observatory at Ray around 1074 and assigned him the task of determining a correct solar calendar. This had become necessary in view of the revenue collections and other administrative matters that were to be performed at different times of the year. Khayyam introduced a calendar that was remarkably accurate, and was named as

Omar Khayyam I've been debating with myself over whose name to list as the author of this famous poem. While it's true that Omar Khayyam himself was the originator of the Rubaiyat's far from simple philosophy (and of the wonderfully bewitching exposition thereof), it's also true that Edward Fitzgerald's translation is what gives the poem its unique 'atmosphere' (to readers in English, at least) - the two are (in the minds of most reviewers) inseparable. The Omar Khayyam is a correspondence chapter of STARFLEET: The International Star Trek Fan Association. We are home-ported in Watertown, Massachussetts, and are part of STARFLEET's Region Fifteen. As a correspondence chapter, the crew of the Omar Khayyam perform most of their duties through the Internet. However, we strive to be more sociable and some of us can be found lurking in IRC, while others join together for the occasional face-to-face gathering. The crew of the Omar Khayyam is composed of simulation/roleplayers, fiction writers and story tellers. Our hobbies are many and varied, with enough in common however, to make an interesting mix of characters. Hakim Abolfath Omar Ebn Ibrahim Khayyam Neishapuri, known as Omar Khayyam. Omar Khayyam was born at Naishapur in Khorasan (north-east province of Iran) in the latter half of the eleventh century (probably, A.D. 1048), and died within the first quarter of the twelfth century (probably, A.D. 1123). Omar Khayyam is the most famous Persian astronomer, mathematician and poet. His Robaiyyat is translated to more than 40 languages.
