I could not live by literature if only to begin with, because of the slow maturing of my work and its special character.
And when is there time to remember, to sift, to weigh, to estimate, to total? I know that I haven't powers enough to divide myself into one who earns and one who creates. Time granted does not necessarily coincide with time that can be most fully used. There are worse words than cuss words, there are words that hurt.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Dann Hayes, Director of Media Relations,
April 17, 2001 Noted Award-Winning author, Tillie Olsen, Noun Speaker GRINNELL, Iowa - On Tuesday, April 24 and Wednesday, April 25, noted award-winning author, Tillie Olsen, will visit the Grinnell College campus as the final Noun Program in Women's Studies speaker for the 2000-2001 academic year. At 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Olsen will speak on "Tillie Olsen Reminiscing and Reading from her Various Works" in the Forum South Lounge, Grinnell College. There will be a reception and a book signing following the event. On Wednesday at 4:15 p.m., there will be a "Read-In, in Honor of Tillie Olsen," with members of the Grinnell College campus community reading from selected works. The author of the highly praised book "Tell Me a Riddle, Silences, and Yonnondio," Olsen, 89, is a Nebraska native, born in 1912, who began writing in the 1930s with her first short story, "The Iron Throat" and the poem "I Want You Women Up North to Know" (Partisan Review, 1934). As a child, she accompanied her father to several midwest strike actions in the company of Eugene Debs and Big Bill Haywood. The necessity of raising and supporting four children through "everyday jobs" silenced her for 20 years. Self-taught, Olsen has taught, or been a writer-in-residence, at Amherst College, Amherst, Mass; Stanford University, Stanford, Calif.; Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, Mass.; and Kenyon College, Gambier, Ohio.

Essay Questions
Major Issues
Tillie Olsen has explored inter-generational relationships, especially between mothers and daughters, through both literary works and photographs. Feminist and Marxist critics have shown interest in Olsen’s presentation of the economic and sexist obstacles to personal fulfillment. Olsen’s major themes, scholars note, include: unrealized dreams; the physical and psychological toll of the burdens placed on women; and financial and personal desperation. Critics praise Olsen’s commitment to feminism and social activism, evident in both her writing and her life. Her contribution to feminist literary studies, especially her promotion of non-conventional forms of women’s writing (such as diaries and notebooks) has also been recognized.

O'BRIAN, Patrick. Post Captain.
Philadelphia: Lippincott (1972). First American edition of the second of the Jack Aubrey novels. Small public library stamp partially whited out on top page edges; no other markings of any kind. About near fine in like jacket with moderate edgewear. A nice copy. O'BRIEN, Tim. Northern Lights. NY: Delacorte Press/ Seymour Lawrence (1975). His second novel, a tale of two brothers in the wilderness of northern Minnesota, one of them a war veteran, the other a veteran of the protests against that war. Inscribed by the author to Seymour Lawrence : "To Sam/ With great admiration/ and respect and, mostly,/ thanks ,/ Your friend,/ Tim." Top edges of cloth faded, else a fine copy in a very near fine dust jacket with slight wear at the crown. A cheaply-made, "perfectbound" book, this title is difficult to find in nice condition, rivaling his first book, If I Die in a Combat Zone , for scarcity. The association is an excellent one: Lawrence published O'Brien's first three books, to increasing critical acclaim, culminating in his third book

NIATUM, Duane. Taos Pueblo.
(Greenfield): (Greenfield Review) (1973). An early book by this important Native American poet, who also edited two of the seminal anthologies of American Indian literature. Inscribed by the author to poet Richard Eberhart and his wife in the year of publication. Fine in wrappers. A nice literary association. NIN, Anais. House of Incest. Paris: Siana Editions (1936). One of 249 numbered copies of the first edition of Nin's second book, first novel, signed by the author Tropic of Cancer two years earlier turned down the book, and Nin set up her own imprint, Siana Editions (Anais backward), with the help of Miller, Michael Fraenkel and Alfred Perles. Although the limitation page indicates 249 signed copies, years after publication Nin sold the last hundred copies, unsigned, to American underground publisher Sam Abramson, meaning that fewer than 150 copies of this edition were numbered and signed by Nin. Additionally, this copy is inscribed by the author OATES, Joyce Carol.

I Stand Here Ironing
Published in 1961 in Tillie Olsen’s first collection of short stories, I Stand Here Ironing is probably Olsen’s most famous short story. The story is written as a monologue by an unnamed mother as she reflects on the toll that poverty and abandonment must have taken on the childhood of her nineteen-year old daughter Emily. It portrays the difficulties faced by young mothers as they try to raise children by themselves.

    Tillie Olsen
    Tillie Olsen

Olsen was born in 1912 or 1913 in Nebraska to Russian Jewish parents who came to America after the failed revolution of 1905. Like her parents, Olsen was a committed Socialist working for social change. Upon leaving school in the eleventh grade, Olsen worked as an unskilled laborer until her first child was born in 1931. In the following year she moved to San Francisco where she became a professional writer. Now recognized as a founder of the Women's Movement, she continues to fight for women's rights and other progressive causes. For more on the history of feminism in America, see the Cline Library's "Resources for Women's Studies" page . "I Stand Here Ironing" appeared in Olsen's collection of short stories, Tell Me a Riddle (1961). Set in the Great Depression, the story presents a powerful, first-person account of the difficulties working-class women faced as both parents and laborers. For links to resources on the Depression, see "The Great Depression" page . Olsen has also produced a novel

Youngest of 13 children of poor Protestant parents (8 died in infancy). Grew up frail and undernourished in appalling Dublin slums. His schooling was hampered by eye disease. Didn't read properly until 13. Early working life as casual road labourer. Learnt Gaelic. Became active trade unionist. Helped organise Irish Citizen Army (1914) incl its constitution. Took part in the Easter Uprising (1916). Viewed as cantankerous idealist. Wrote 3 plays which were rejected by Abbey Theatre. Fourth - 'The Shadow of a Gunman' - produced 1923 - about residents of tenement during an Irish rebellion, as was 'Juno and the Paycock' (1924). 'The Plough and the Stars' (1926) caused a riot because of its alleged unpatriotic portrayal of events of 1916. Its reception prompted O'Casey to move to England. Later plays incl anti-war, anti-clerical and Socialist ideals - but didn't have the same power as those written in his home country. Also wrote several autobiographical books. [CGEL, RE, DWB]
