Zinsmeister Inflammatory Bowel Disease Clinic, Division of Gastroenterology, Division of Area General Internal Medicine, and Sections of Biostatistics and Epidemiology, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota; and Center for Health Care Research, Medical University of South Carolina, Charleston South Carolina Many centers worldwide have reported an increased incidence of Crohn's disease, but population-based data in North America are sparse. We studied the incidence and prevalence of Crohn's disease in Olmsted County, Minnesota, and examined temporal trends in incidence and survival. Methods: Residents diagnosed with Crohn's disease between 1970 and 1993 were incidence cases, and residents with Crohn's disease who were alive on January 1, 1991, were prevalence cases. Cases from previous studies were reconfirmed. Rates were adjusted using 1990 U.S. Census figures for whites. Incidence trends were evaluated with a Poisson regression model. Survival from diagnosis was compared with that expected for U.S. north-central whites. Results: Between 1940 and 1993, 225 incidence cases were identified, for an adjusted incidence rate of 5.8 per 100,000 person-years. On January 1, 1991, there were 145 residents with Crohn's disease, an adjusted prevalence rate of 133 per 100,000, 46% higher than that seen in 1980. Incidence rates before 1964 were significantly lower than those of 1989-1993. Observed survival was less than expected (P = 0.007).

Marc Bertucco Checks In August 27, 2002 Race Fans... I lined up with 108 other riders Sunday afternoon for the NRC's Chris Thater Classic. Most of the pro teams seemed to be at half-strength sending only 4-6 riders. The rest of the field was filled with some of the top New England amateurs and me. I had a pre-race chat with Robbie Ventura and we were off. The course is one of the hardest I've ever done with a grueling power-climb immediately followed by a short decent and a scary-fast left turn. The 2 kilometer L-shaped course chewed me up and spit me out. Honestly, I had the kind of day I would like to forget. I was horrible. I mean, I was beyond horrible. I lasted exactly 3 of 40 laps. Okay, so I raced around 3 more laps with a rider that was actually having a worse day than me before the officials yanked us. Why, did I continue? Why am I telling you this? Because, we've all had days like this. And it's important to learn something from even your worst days in the saddle; otherwise your hard-earned entry fee is a total waste. I learned many things this weekend: 1. It is not a good omen, when a Deer runs into the rear quarter-panel of your rental car on the drive to the race.
