Wedding Cake
Naomi Shihab Nye Once on a plane
a woman asked me to hold her baby
and disappeared.
I figured it was safe,
our being on a plane and all.
How far could she go? She returned one hour later
having changed her clothes
and washed her hair.
I didn't recognize her. By this time the baby
and I had examined
each other's necks. We had cried a little. I had a silver bracelet and a watch. Gold studs glittered in the baby's ears. She wore a tiny white dress leafed with layers like a wedding cake. I did not want to give her back. The baby's curls coiled tightly against her scalp, another alphabet. I read new new new. My mother gets tired. I'll chew your hand. The baby left my skirt crumpled, my lap aching. Now I'm her secret guardian, the little nub of dream that rises slightly but won't come clear.

Written by Pat Twair
reprinted from Aramco World, Jan/Feb 1998 April will be a big month for Naomi Shihab Nye. Her anthology of contemporary Middle Eastern poetry and art, The Space Between Our Footsteps, will be published by Simon and Schuster; a book of her own poems, Fuel, will be released by BOA Editions, Ltd. and The Way It Is, a book of poems by her friend and mentor, the late William Stafford, for which she wrote the introduction, is also slated for publication. The Space Between Our Footsteps, Nye explains, is the first such anthology accessible to teenage readers. "I checked in high-school libraries throughout the country, and with the exception of my own anthology of international poets, This Same Sky, there was no book containing the works of Middle Eastern poets," she says.
The 40 color paintings and other art in the book were selected from thousands of submissions by Arab-American and Middle Eastern artists. "My editor called me in San Antonio and told me to come to New York and start making selections," she recalls. "It was amazing when I entered a conference room and found stacks of boxes. It was difficult to choose from such out standing original work."
Alert and energetic, Nye makes it clear she prefers simple food, natural wood, hand-woven fabric and lived-in dwellings. She and her husband, Michael, live with their 10-year-old son, Madison White Cloud, in a small 1906 frame house in a Mexican- American neighborhood near the Guadalupe River in San Antonio, Texas. Nye's father, Aziz Shihab, worked for years as a writer at the

Called the "Grande Dame of diasporic Indian literature," Bharati Mukherjee is the author of six novels, including Jasmine , two short-story collectionsone of which, The Middleman and Other Stories , won the National Book Critics Circle Award for Fiction and two nonfiction works with her husband, the writer Clark Blaise. Desirable Daughters , her most recent novel, has been compared to The Joy Luck Club in its honest portrayal of the American immigrant experience; William Kennedy calls it "a beautifully written family story of the eternal pull of ancient Indian tradition on even the most contemporary of lives." Robert Olen Butler writes, "Mukherjee is writing achingly compassionate, ravishingly beautiful, absolutely essential books. And Desirable Daughters is one of her best." She teaches English at the University of California at Berkeley.

Fuel
Bill's Beans
for William Stafford
Under the leaves, they're long and cutting.
I pull a perfect question mark and two lean twins,
feeling the magnetic snap of stem, the ripened weight
At the end of a day, the earth smells thirsty.
He left his brown hat, his shovel, and his pen.
I don't know how deep bean roots go.
We could experiment. He left the sky over Oregon and the fluent trees. He gave us our lives that were hiding under our feet, saying, You know what to do. So we'll take these beans back into the house and steam them We'll eat them one by one with our fingers, the clean click and freshness We'll thank him forever for our breath, and the brevity of bean. Fuel Even at this late date, sometimes I have to look up the word "receive." I received his deep and interested gaze.

The Eye Begins to See Tuesday, April 09, 2002 Naomi Shihab Nye 's World View I am not very political . I do vote semi-regularly, or at least I vote semi-regularly against those who I do not want to vote for, but I do so with little faith that my vote will have much effect or will, indeed, insure that the person I would never vote for will not get elected. Witness the election, or rather, non-election, of our present president.

So, half-and-half and half-and-half.

Naomi Shihab Nye
I had the pleasure of seeing Naomi Shihab Nye when she addressed the Champaign Children's Literature Festival as the keynote speaker in fall of 2001. Her presence was calm and clear, like a still pool of water, and her manner of speaking was soft and low, but her words were passionate as she spoke of her love of poetry and the power of the written and spoken word to uplift us all. Nye's career as a poet was solidly established with her poetry written for adults long before she came back to the remembered delights of children's literature as an author. She describes the birth of her own child as one step in this return: "One of the delights of having our son was that it was now legitimate for me to return to that part of the library I so loved when I was young." In her poetry, Nye captures everyday details of life in all their simplicity and complexity. She balances her own perspective with a keen sense of the impact of details in the life of a child, which gives her work immediate accessibility for a young audience. In her poem Spinning (from the book

Kindness
By Naomi Shihab Nye, a Palestinian poet
Before you know what kindness really is
you must lose things,
feel the future dissolve in a moment
like salt in a weakened broth.
What you held in your hand,
what you counted and carefully saved,
all this must go so you know
how desolate the landscape can be
between the regions of kindness.
How you ride and ride thinking the bus will never stop, the passengers eating maize and chicken will stare out the window forever. Before you learn the tender gravity of kindness, you must travel where the Indian in a white poncho lies dead by the side of the road. You must see how this could be you, how he too was someone who journeyed through the night with plans and the simple breath that kept him alive. Before you know kindness as the deepest thing inside, you must know sorrow as the other deepest thing. You must wake up with sorrow. You must speak to it till your voice catches the thread of all sorrows and you see the size of the cloth. Then it is only kindness that makes sense anymore

Each piece is a work of art and sings in the voices of immigrants and immigrants' children and with the rhythms of life in the Middle East. Don't buy this book expecting to find a treatise on terrorism or the events of September 11. Buy it to see through another's eyes and sing in another's voice. This is a fantastic book in its own right and a great introduction to the talent and skill of Naomi Shihab Nye. Review #2 Ranking 5 this book was recommended to me by a friend, so i wasn't sure what to expect. i am really glad to have bought it, the poems are like little stories someone tells you on the porch while it's getting dark. very vivid, i felt as if i knew these people...fathers, mothers, grandmothers, schoolchildren, old arab men selling crafts... Echoes Main Biography Sample Poetry Inspired Poems ... Bibliography The Poetic World of Naomi Shihab Nye Descending from a half-Palestinian and half-American family tree, Naomi Shihab Nye is an appealing figure paving the way for ethnic poets and young poets alike. Although she was born in Missouri, she is well traveled. She lived in Jerusalem but currently resides in Texas with her son, Madison, and husband, Michael, who is a photographer. The fact that Nye originated from such a transient and ethnic family acted as a springboard for her future career as an author. She is known for her essays and anthologies of the Middle East, which includes, perhaps her most famous Middle Eastern based anthology, Different Ways to Pray , published in 1980. Howe ver, despite her wide range of exposures to other cultures, Naomi Shihab Nye often chooses to write about the little details of life that we often take for granted. She says that she wanted to remember all of the details in her eventful and fruitful life. Consequentially, she keeps a journal. She has had a hunger to write poetry since seven years of age, when she composed her first poem. Since then she received an education from Trinity University located in Texas, along with many awards. Her works Different Ways to Pray and Hugging the Jukebox won the Voertman Poetry Prize. She has also earned three Pushcart Prizes. Her books

In “My Friend’s Divorce,” Naomi Shihab Nye shows how one must persevere during all occasions and hardships by paralleling her friend’s life to her garden. She consoles her distressed friend by advising her to replant her beloved garden. “Take the blooming/ and the almost blooming/ and the dormant/ especially the dormant/ and then/ and then/ plant them in her new yard/ on the other side/ of town/ and see how/ they breathe.” This quote clearly expresses Nye’s desire to detach all aspects of her friend from her past. She suggests her friend should replenish herself in the future by creating a fresh environment in which she can establish sturdy roots and blossom into a new beginning. Thus the garden symbolizes her friend’s life. Through Nye’s vivid description and symbolism, she reminds us that we all have a garden, which we must constantly maintain to allow it to fully bloom.

Speaking at the 1994 Festival
So many poets take us back to the things of the world, the things which often go unnoticed, and say, “Pause, take note, a story is being told…” I don’t look at anything as being insignificant. I think that’s another gift of poetry,…the tiniest moments are splendid.
NAOMI SHIHAB NYE was born in St. Louis, Missouri to a Palestinian father and an American mother. She grew up in St. Louis, Jerusalem, and Antonio, Texas, where she now lives with her family. Her six books of poetry include Fuel Words Under the Words: Selected Poems Red Suitcase (1994), and Hugging the Jukebox As the editor of the popular anthologies This Same Sky: A Collection of Poems from around the World, and The Tree Is Older Than You Are she has been instrumental in introducing the next generation to poetry from many cultures. She has twice traveled to the Middle East and Asia promoting international goodwill through the arts. Nye is also an award-winning author of children’s books and young adult fiction. Her many honors include Guggenheim and Witter Bynner Fellowships, two Jane Addams Children’s Book Awards, and the Lavan Award from the Academy of American Poets.
