The Fourth Horseman
There is a continuum from medical thrillers to science fiction, with the distinction that thrillers generally salvage civilization as we know it, whereas SF writers take delight in portraying civilization's collapse. Thrillers end before the midnight hour of irretrievable change, no matter how ambiguously (as in Ken McClure's Requiem ), whereas science fiction takes us through the hours after midnight. In a thriller, an outbreak of disease will claim a handful of victims before being contained. In SF, it is equally likely to leave but a handful of survivors. ... one day in midsummer when some semblance of communications networks were being pieced back together again ... someone speculated in official tones that on that morning something in the order of seventeen million pairs of American eyes had greeted the dawn. Nobody really believed the figure; on the very face of it, it was really pretty unbelievable. And everybody was probably right, too.

A regular contributor to the science fiction & mystery magazines of the 1950s & '60s, his best known story is probably "The Ruum", a much-reprinted tale with a style that typifies the majority of his unusual work. Hyperspace in Science Fiction
by Sten Odenwald
Along side these stories which more or less toe the line with special relativity, proclaiming that FTL travel is impossible are stories that took the next step following the developments in Einstein's General Theory of relativity. Authors began, tentatively at first and then with increasing boldness, to find technological solutions to space travel that did not involve moving through ordinary 3-dimensional space with its nasty "thou shalt not exceed the speed of light" edict. These methods might be termed 'inter dimensional travel' since that is often the manner in which the problem is solved. This sub-genera of writing probably had its inception when authors began exploring certain conceptual ideas in general relativity. As they became more comfortable with the ideas of multi-dimensional space, developed an increasing array of applications for it. At first, these journies were limited to laboratory experiments that went badly wrong. The story by Donald Wandrei The Blinding Shadows (1934) described an inventor who builds a complicated optical machine that rotates in all maner of directions, with lenses made of Rhillium. This fictitious element has the unusual property, according to the stories Dr. Dowdson, that 50 percent of the energy falling on it just vanishes, presumably into the fourth dimension. The rotation of the Rhillium lenses are so complex that, not only does motion occur in the normal 3 dimensions to space, but occasionally into a fourth as well. The good doctor's goal is to image objects from the 4th dimension in 3 dimensional space. What happens is that the black shadows of alien beings soon appear, escape from his lab and start to gobble up most of the inhabitants of New York City!

Art work used with permission of the artist. No reproductions or copies can be made without the express permission of the artist. Those of you who have program books from NorWesCon 1, 2 and 3 you will recognize much of this information and may if you wish move on to the next section.. In the oft' told story of the birthing of NorWesCon, it is noted that NorWesCon grew out the desire of the founders to host a worldcon. The cry of "Seattle In '81" was heard through out northwest fandom. A goal was established, but there was just one very major stumbling block. Most of these dreamers had very little experience in con running, so in a effort to remedy this deficiency put together NorWesCon ''to get some practice". Realizing the task was a large one they also started the Northwest Science Fiction Society, also known as NWSFS (thus sparking the great "NOOS-fuss" vs "Nizz-Fizz" debates), to help gather a group of people to draw volunteers from. Thus was born NorWesCon. NorWesCons list has grown over the years, starting with a list of three (A GoH, FGoH and a TM) we now include artists, Scientists, Volunteers and special guest. NorWesCon has always made an effort to invite guests that are deserving of being 'Honored' and has thus had a prestigious parade of guests. Honors are also bestowed on the winner of the Philip K. Dick award given to the author of the Best original novel appearing in paperback form without prior publication as a hardback. The first time the

Plot Los Angeles of 2017. Rick Deckard is a blade runner - a bounty hunter that specializes in terminating replicants, androids so able to mimic human behaviour that they are indistinguishable from humans except in the mimicry of emotions, something that can only be detected by a test that measures reflexive responses to questions of an emotional nature. He is called in by the police to hunt down four replicants escaped from an offworld colony and come to Earth in search of their creator to find a means of extending their built-in four-year lifespan. But Deckard's quest to find the replicants is one that makes him end up questioning his own purpose.

obert J. Sawyer bills himself as English-Canada's only native-born, full-time science fiction writer. It's a job he takes quite seriously by injecting a healthy dose of Canada into most of his work, something which "American editors and readers have embraced." Fittingly, Sawyer has been honored for his work in both countries, earning the Aurora Award Canada's national science fiction writing award a Nebula Award and a nomination on the Hugo ballot. Sawyer first began publishing science fiction with a short story sale to The Village Voice in 1981. Since then he has produced numerous short stories and nine novels, including seven novels currently in publication and two which have been completed but not yet published (Frameshift, due from Tor Books in May 1997, and Illegal Alien, due from Ace Books in 1998). His latest book, Starplex, just hit store shelves, and typical of Sawyer it combines both hard science fiction and mystery. Last week Sawyer sat down with Science Fiction Weekly to answer questions submitted by our readers about his views on science fiction, reading and the next millennium. Here is what he had to say:
