Canada, V6R 4G4 Re: Letter of Resignation from FRIENDS' Advisory Council Dear Peter: As you have served in an honorary capacity since 1988, you have had no involvement in the formation of our mission, priorities and strategies over the past decade, and carry no responsibility for our current direction. We regret that, since losing your active participation thirteen years ago, we have never received any expression from you of any concerns over our policies, priorities or procedures until today. Our mission is to defend and enhance the quality and quantity of Canadian programming in the audio-visual system. Hence, our concerns include both public and private broadcasters, the cable monopolies, other distributors, the CRTC and the federal government. As Daryl, Ian and I told the CRTC yesterday, CanWest Global and CTV are the black sheep of the Canadian broadcasting system because they reach Canadians with so little Canadian programming during peak viewing periods. For example, only 5% of the prime-time audience Global assembled in 1999 watched Canadian shows, and only 12% of CTV's prime-time audience watched Canadian shows.

Dear Ian,
This is my long overdue resignation from your organization, which I
am convinced has become tragically diverted from its original purpose.
You will recall that we began this organization, then more
accurately called Friends of Public Broadcasting, to give the CBC a
constituency outside itself. During the first few years of activity we
succeeded in this endeavour, and I well recall Pierre Berton, Adrienne Clarkson and myself writing and signing several fund raising letters, making specific reference to the need for an unbiased voice to support public broadcasting in Canada. I have followed with mounting horror the evolution of this once pure and modest organization into a special interest lobby group, singling out

'Bush league initiative'
As George W. Bush embarks on his first official European tour, one of his most difficult tasks will be allaying leaders' fears about U.S. plans for a national missile defence shield Peter C. Newman
National Post, June 13, 2001
Ahhh, those poor damn Yankees. Here they are, the most powerful nation on Earth, and there is not a credible enemy in sight to provide the rationale for boosting military spending that might drag their economy out of recession. The problem, of course, is that having won the Cold War, the Americans are left without a visible ogre to justify higher defence appropriations, except perhaps Fidel Castro. Unfortunately, El Comandante, now deep into his seventies, his belligerence muted since he gave up cigars in 1985, spends most of his time negotiating resort-hotel deals with Canadian entrepreneurs. At the same time, Colombian drug lords and African despots have grown alarmingly scarce, hardly worth activating the U.S. invasion forces, once regularly deployed invading such domino-theory strongholds as Grenada and Panama. (Besides, the fun has gone out of wading ashore on foreign beaches; CNN usually gets there first. Stepping on sea urchins poses a greater threat than setting off mines.) It all amounts to not very much if you have been used to confronting the wicked machinations of the Evil Empire, Ronald Reagan's take on the former Union of Soviet Socialist Republics.

Fee Range:$5,001-$9,999 Video
Peter C. Newman was born in Vienna and came to Canada in 1940. He is Canada's pre-eminent student of power. Doors that remain closed to most observers are open to him. "His portraits of the rich and powerful," writes The Financial Post, "not only live, but leap right off the pages. His subjects are often startlingly open with him."
Having been editor-in-chief of both Canada's most influential magazine, Maclean's (which he turned into a weekly newsmagazine), and its largest-circulation newspaper, The Toronto Star, Newman is a veteran chronicler of Canada's rapidly changing society. His twenty books, meticulously researched and amusingly written studies of political and economic power on the march, have sold two million copies. Economic guru John Kenneth Galbraith has described Newman's books as "the best guide anyone will ever encounter to Canada and Canadians."
To research his lively Maclean's column, "The Nation's Business", Newman roams the country, interviewing the governed and those who govern, the outwardly influential and the real sources of hidden power. A Companion of the Order of Canada, he recently received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Canadian Journalism Foundation.
Newman lives with his wife, a psychoneuro-immunologist, at Hopkins Landing, an unincorporated village at the base of a mountain-ringed fjord. That tiny wet dot on the Pacific Coast might be a hundred leagues under the sea, so culturally distant does it seem from Greater Amalgamated Toronto, the milieu Newman once called home. They spend leisure hours aboard the Pacific Mystic, an auxiliary cutter built to seek out fair winds. He wrote Titans from the boat's forepeak.

peter C. newman. Company of Adventurers. Markham, Ontario Penguin Books CanadaLtd., 1985. and peter C. newman consider the above what history is all about?
http://www.usask.ca/native_studies/NSR/Frames/Book Reviews/2-2/2-2Newman.html
Peter C. Newman:. Company of Adventurers . Markham, Ontario: Penguin Books Canada Ltd., 1985. Review by Winona Stevenson My first introduction to Peter C. Newman's Company of Adventurers appeared in the Globe and Mail on October 19, 1985. Covering almost an entire page was a story entitled "A Daily Struggle by a Frozen Sea," the first of two promotional excerpts. I must admit, the excerpt was impressive. In fine narrative style interspersed with graphic anecdotes Newman took his reader back in time to the hardships of everyday life at the Company posts along the bay. Visions of the frost-lined, drafty cabins housing far too many arthritic men for comfort elicited pangs of sympathy. The huge amounts of food and alcohol consumed by these fortuitous men appeared inconsequential in light of the daily struggle they endured for sheer survival. Until now the history of the fur trade and the Hudson's Bay Company received the attention of a handful of scholars and other interested folk. Confined to the dry, rigid, scientific style considered necessary to establish scholastic credibility, historians have inadvertently reduced public access to the fruits of their labour. Newman's stylistic flair promised to provide 'non-academic' readers greater access to this fascinating feature of Canadian history. Furthermore, though lacking the finer qualities and techniques requisite in academic historic works (like proper footnote citations and critical analysis, to name just a few), the excerpt could not be considered horribly offensive to the more sensitive reader of historical literature. In anticipation I awaited the publication of the second excerpt.

Peter C. Newman: Caesars of the Wilderness . Markham: Viking, Penguin Books Canada Ltd., 1987. Review by Robert Coutts Amidst considerable promotional hype and media coverage Penguin Books has published Caesars of the Wilderness , volume two of Peter C. Newman's trilogy on the history of the Hudson's Bay Company. Company of Adventurers , the first volume of the series, covered the years from the founding of the Company in 1670 to the formation of the rival North West Company in 1783. Caesars begins in the period of fur trade competition, moves through the era of consolidation and monopoly in the nineteenth century, and ends with the sale of Rupertsland to Canada in 1869 and the displacement of the fur trade by agricultural settlement. Undaunted by the criticism of Company of Adventurers by fur trade scholars, Native organizations and others across Canada, Newman has continued his quest to "re-create the interplay of feisty characters and remarkable circumstances that shaped the story of the Hudson's Bay Company during the middle century of is existence" (p. xii). An ambitious undertaking, but what is the result? Ironically, Caesars of the Wilderness and its highblown claims to "unroll a new map of the Canadian past for contemporary readers" and to "extract live metaphors from the Dead Sea Scrolls of Canadian history" (p. xii), degenerates into a badly flawed, Eurocentric jumble of tired old cliches and stereotypes, factual inaccuracies and outdated interpretations. Eschewing any real primary research (only a handful of the book's endnotes refer to documentary sources) Newman relies instead upon secondary works that are often outdated, inaccurate or both. Like its predecessor, Caesars of the Wilderness largely ignores the fur trade scholarship of the last fifteen years in favour of the interpretations found in the works of an older generation of historians such as Frederick Merk, John Gray, Grace Lee Nute and Douglas MacKay, or in the anecdotal accounts of Grant MacEwen, Douglas Francis and Frank Rasky.

History as Story.
Peter C. Newman and the Hudson's Bay Co.
By Chris Carton.
Volume 18 Number 1
1990 January
One of Canada's best-selling authors discusses his formula for success in popularizing Canadian history: romanticism, myth building and leaving out the dull parts. Enrolment in high school history courses is down. Past high school history is just a memory for most people. But history sells maybe not as well as crime or romance or espionage but it sells. Peter C. Newman is a writer whose history is read. People who could only just bear to hang on through the final exam in high school have cheerfully forked over twenty or thirty dollars to read Newman's Hudson's Bay Company histories, Company of Adventurers and Caesars of the Wilderness . Newman chatted with me while he was promoting an illustrated companion to these volumes, Empire of the Bay , which undoubtedly turned up under its share of Christmas trees. Teachers everywhere should ask themselves why. Newman is one of Canada's best known journalists. Formerly editor-in-chief of Canada's "national" magazine, Maclean's , and the country's largest newspaper, the Toronto Star, Newman looks back to a time when he was an eleven-year-old Jewish refugee from Czechoslovakia fleeing Hitler's nazism. In a career that includes thirteen best selling books on history and politics and numerous awards for journalism, the affection he feels for this country seems to be his guiding principle: 'I never took Canada for granted. I always thought this was an incredible, wonderful country. It saved my life when I was running away from the Nazis...and has given me not only a home but an incredible career."

IBM C-Planners' Web Site Answers from David Newman to Peter Rees
Here is a note (dated 16.03.2001) from Peter Rees to the IBM Customer Response Centre on Pensions. It has answers to Peter's queries in blue from David Newman, Pensions Trust Manager (reply dated 03.04.2001). What do you think? Does it clarify the picture? To: UK Ireland General Enquiries/UK/IBM@IBMGB
Subject: FW: Pension Fund Administration Query I have recently been told that IBM UK has transferred or is planning to transfer a huge sum of money out of the C plan fund which I contributed to and which I expect to use my contribution for the purpose for which I gave it. I have 3 questions: Is this true? No. There is only one fund, which supports a number of different sections of the IBM Main Pension Plan. These sections include the C plan, N Plan, M Plan........... What is true however, is that the IBM Company has not made any contributions to the M plan ( a new Defined Contribution section of the Main Plan introduced in 1997), as these have been funded out of the overall surplus. This is no different to the contributions holiday that the Company has taken in relation to the C plan, N Plan,.... since 1997. Your pension entitlements have not, and will not, been affected by any of the above.
