Poetry/Natural History Table of Contents Editor Biographies Reviews "A groundbreaking anthology of California poetry." The Geography of Home
California's Poetry of Place Edited by Christopher Buckley and Gary Young
332 pages, (6 x 9)
Trade paper, ISBN: 1-890771-19-8, $16.95 California is home to a wide variety of highly accomplished - in some cases, world-renowned - poets. Ripe with beauty, politics, and an endless diversity of people and cultures, California has nurtured poets born and raised on its soil, and drawn to it established writers from other places. The Geography of Home brings together the works of seventy-six important figures in contemporary California poetry, including Philip Levine, Peter Everwine, Mark Jarman, Adrienne Rich, Dennis Schmitz, Carolyn Kizer, Gary Soto, Al Young, Kim Addonizio, Charles Wright, Carol Muske, David St. John, Larry Levis, Robert Hass, Gary Snyder, William Everson, Gary Soto, Luis Omar Salinas, Diane Wakoski, Garrett Hongo, Jane Hirshfield, and Brenda Hillman. Through the multiple selections for each poet, we can witness connections to California, visions of the place poets have at one time or other called home. Additionally, the poets have written introductory statements expressly for this anthology that will speak to their history in California, and to the influence of the state on their poetry. In this long-awaited collection, California's unique and complex geography is examined, questioned, and ultimately celebrated, through forms as varied, dynamic, and compelling as the state itself.

Last March, Professor Carol Muske, who teaches creative writing at UNC, traveled to West Point for the first time to give a poetry reading and to meet with several cadet classes under the auspices of the Academy’s Visiting Poet Program. What Muske found at USMA—literate cadets as well as officer-faculty interested in poetry—both amazed and delighted her. She then wrote a full-page, quasi–tongue-in-cheek description of her one-day visit for the New York Times Book Review (“Shakespeare Meets the Long Gray Line,” July 20, 1997, p. 35). It is an essay the breathless, gee-whiz tone of which is both amusing (“All [faculty] wore uniforms and the de rigueur mirror-surface shoes”) as well as a bit maddening. Although overwhelmingly good-hearted and positive about the Academy, it nonetheless comes across as a piece written by one who expected to find either Martians or a brigade of automatons along the Hudson but was relieved to encounter, instead, normal, bright, and lively military people inquisitive about English literature as well as committed to the profession of arms. LT Derby’s fantastic Squibob tales were published in a San Diego newspaper as well as in New York. Later, an amused President Lincoln would read them aloud during otherwise dull cabinet meetings.

Containing Multitudes

Do I contradict myself?
Very well, then, I contradict myself.
(I am large, I contain multitudes.)

Walt Whitman, "Song of Myself"
Identity, the having and being an "I," is what separates me
from all the others, and also what unites me with them... Self is self-in-relation: no other kind exists.
Alicia Ostriker, "I Am (Not) This: Erotic Discourse in Elizabeth Bishop and Sharon Olds" For good or ill, we live in the age of memoir. As autobiographies, memoirs, fictionalized biographies, and works of creative nonfiction fill bookstores with ever-growing frequency, discussion of the nature and boundaries of autobiographical writing has grown both common and heated. Much of this debate, however, centers around works of prose.
