The Birth Seven o'clock. The seventh day of the seventh month of the year.
No sooner have I got myself up in lime-green scrubs,
a sterile cap and mask,
and taken my place at the head of the table than the windlass-woman ply their shears
and gralloch-grub
for a footling foot, then, warming to their task,
haul into the inestimable realm of apple-blossoms and chanterelles and damsons and eel-spears
and foxes and the general hubbub
of inkies and jennets and Kickapoos with their lemniscs
or peekaboo-quiffs of Russian sable

Thirteen/WNET 450 West 33rd Street New York, NY 10001 PAUL MULDOON "Poetry begins with little glimmers the sense that there might be an interaction between two things, two often quite unlike things that come together in a metaphor or an image." Born in Northern Ireland in 1951, Paul Muldoon was a radio and television producer with the BBC before moving to the United States in the late 1980s. His passion for exact description grows from his awareness that what is apparent often contains a deeper, stranger story. He currently teaches at Princeton University and was recently elected Professor of Poetry at Oxford. "Symposium" You can lead a horse to water but you can't make it hold its nose to the grindstone and hunt with the hounds. Every dog has a stitch in time. Two heads? You've been sold one good turn. One good turn deserves a bird in the hand.

Brighter and smarter than many, perhaps, but in most respects just like any other public hall, Ledbury Community Centre - across the way from the swimming baths - may be gaining the same sort of reputation as the major courts at Wimbledon and the Old Bailey for delivering stark justice to those who appear there. It does not so much humble protagonists as strip them of any pretence. They cannot rely on past glories to win. Spectators may not be unfriendly or partisan, but they have a clear idea of what's expected. Paul Muldoon might be one of the greatest poets in the world today, but he was on his own with an audience that heard him mainly in respectful silence. It was not that they couldn't grasp the excellence - and frequent comedy - of his poems. To borrow a catch-phrase from another Irishman, Frank Carson, it's the way he tells 'em.
Before tackling Poems 1968-1998 - a £12.99 bargain that includes Muldoon's eight main collections - I decided to read Tim Kendall's excellent critical biography. And there, on p.102, it states (in parenthesis): "Muldoon's reading style is so extraordinary that it almost warrants a chapter to itself." So it wasn't just me, then. It must have been a deliberate lack of emphasis on form, meter, the colour of words and the brilliance of metaphors. It chimed with Muldoon's own comment (quoted in the preface) that his poetic technique is to reassure readers that all is well and then leave them "high and dry, in some corner at a terrible party..."

Vera of Las Vegas
Vera of Las Vegas is an entertaining and provocative opera by Composer Daron Hagen and Librettist Paul Muldoon. The clever story mixes sleazy culture and big questions, while the contemporary music has many references to 20th century pop and stage music.
  • Vera Of Las Vegas - Composer Daron Hagen and Librettist Paul Muldoon's opera mixes high art and low culture. Daron Hagen explains.
  • Album-Length Show - Daron Hagen says he and Paul Muldoon grew up listening to '70s concept albums - and it rubbed off.
  • Flight Attendant's Blues - The plot unfolds when the first femme fatale appears, Hagen says.
  • Duet - A pivotal point in the opera concerns a startling discovery and an unexpected reaction.
  • Vera's Song - Daron Hagen says the climax of the opera is one of his favorite arias - AND a '70s folk-rock ballad.

photo by Norman McBeath Paul Muldoon Reading January 30, 2002 THE LOAF When I put my finger to the hole they've cut for a dimmer switch in a wall of plaster stiffened with horsehair it seems I've scratched a two-hundred-year-old itch with a pink and a pink and a pinkie-pick. When I put my ear to the hole I'm suddenly aware of spades and shovels turning up the gain all the way from Raritan to the Delaware with a clink and a clink and a clinky-click When I put my nose to the hole I smell the flood-plain of the canal after a hurricane and the spots of green grass where thousands of Irish have lain with a stink and a stink and a stinky-stick. When I put my eye to the hole I see one holding horsedung to the rain in the hope, indeed, indeed, of washing out a few whole ears of grain with a wink and a wink and a winkie-wick And when I do at last succeed om putting my mouth to the horsehair-fringed niche I can taste the small loaf of bread he baked from that whole seed with a link and a link and a linky-lick.
