His poetry collections include New Weather Why Brownlee Left Meeting the British Madoc: A Mystery The Annals of Chile New Selected Poems 1968-1994 (1996), and most recently Kerry Slides (1996). The New York Times has called him "one of the two or three most accomplished rhymers now writing the the English language" and characterized his work as "witty, oblique poetry that in the best post-modernist fashion focuses on the slippery equivocations of language itself." Paul Muldoon was born in Portadown, County Armagh, Northern Ireland in 1951. He graduated from Queen's University Belfast where Seamus Heaney was his tutor. He worked as a radio and television producer for BBC Belfast before moving to the United States in 1986. He has been the director of the Creative Writing Program at Princeton University since 1990. His next volume will be called Hay , and will feature primarily short, lyrical poems.

BTL talks to Paul Muldoon about his life and work
A Note on Paul Muldoon At 48 years old, Paul Muldoon is the youngest of the poets currently on BTL's list. Like Seamus Heaney, he is from Northern Ireland, having been born in Portadown, Co. Armagh, and raised near a village called the Moy, which makes a number of appearances in his poems. Muldoon was educated at Queen's College, Belfast, where Heaney was then a lecturer, and where he also met some of the other of the poets who had been part of Philip Hobsbaum's 'Group'. New Weather , Muldoon's first collection of poems, appeared in 1973, when he was still a student, and it won a ringing endorsement from Heaney, who described its author as 'the most promising poet to appear in Ireland for years.' The early promise was not left unfulfilled. At three or four year intervals ever since New Weather appeared came Mules , Why Brownlee Left Quoof The Wishbone Meeting the British Madoc: A Mystery Shining Brow The Prince of the Quotidian The Annals of Chile and Hay , books in which, as Neil Corcoran has put it, "his poetry … conducts mixed marriages of various kinds … [bringing] his own family and rural background into a strangely dislocating relationship with an astonishing range of sophisticated literary, historical, and cultural allusion; it crosses contemporary Irish experience with Amerinidian Trickster mythology; it joins early Irish legend to the thrillers of Raymond Chandler; it performs some radical formal experiments with that most traditional of poetic means, the sonnet. Wily and mischievous, these conjunctions are energetic displays of a subtle, learned, and ironic intelligence, placing the reader in a constant state of interpretative alertness and insecurity."

Last updated on 13 August2001 Paul Muldoon Paul Muldoon was born in Portadown, County Armagh, Northern Ireland, in 1951, and brought up near the Moy - a village in an area called Collegelands. His mother Brigid was a schoolteacher and his father Patrick 'a labourer, and for some time a market gardener.' In the grammar school of St. Patrick's College in Armagh, teachers introduced him to Irish language and music, to T. S. Eliot and to The Faber Book of Modern Verse which he 'more or less learned off by heart.' At seventeen he started writing poetry, at first in Irish. When he came to Queen's University Belfast in 1969, he gave up writing in Irish because he felt he 'didn't have a real command of the language.' At Queen's, Seamus Heaney, whom he had met before and who had helped publish some of his poems, was his tutor. He joined him, Michael Longley, the critic Michael Allen, and other writers in weekly meetings where new poems were discussed. Among his fellow-students were Medbh McGuckian, Ciaran Carson and Frank Ormsby. In 1973, while still at university, his first volume of poetry, New Weather In that year, he graduated from Queen's with a bachelor's degree in English literature and started to work at BBC Belfast where he had 'somehow wangled a job' as a radio and television producer. After the death of his father in 1985, he quit his job and moved to the USA a year later. He lives there with his wife the novelist Jean Hanff Korelitz and their two children. He is Howard G.B. Clark Professor of the Humanities and Creative Writing at Princeton University where, since 1990, he has also been the director of the Creative Writing Program.

Muldoon, Paul The Birth
Genre Poem Keywords Childbirth Father-Daughter Relationship Parenthood Pregnancy Summary "The Birth", appropriately, is the last of the three birth-cycle poems in The Annals of Chile, Muldoon's latest collection. The three together (all annotated in this databasesee "Sonogram" and "Footling" ) celebrate three aspects of the gestation and delivery of the poet's new daughter. Beginning with the poet's donning a scrub suit ("lime-green scrubs"), the poem quickly explodes into a festive pyrotechnics that reminds one of Gerard Manley Hopkins and Joyce: ". . . the windlass-women ply their shears / and gralloch-grub / for a footling foot, then, warming to their task, / haul into the inestimable / realm of apple-blossoms and chanterelles and damsons / and eel-spears. . . . " It takes courage and skill to carry off such a verbal tour de force but Muldoon aptly does so, charging the poem with the newness, sheer power of wonder, and joy of loving a thing for itself that his daughter's birth means to him. This is a joyous poem that can almost visibly demonstrate to students how poetry gets its job done. It may even make more than a few try their hand.

Muldoon, Paul Sonogram
Genre Poem Keywords Childbirth Father-Daughter Relationship Parenthood Pregnancy Summary This is the first of three poems (all annotated in this database) chronicling events that culminate in the arrival of the poet's new daughter. The second, "Footling" , relates her in utero reluctance to sally forth; the last, "The Birth" , is a verbal Fourth of July celebrating the birth of Dorothy Aoife Korelitz Muldoon. "Sonogram" is a three-stanza, eight-line image of the sonogram and the images it suggests. It reminds one of Pound's famous Metro poem for its sheer economy and pictorial power. PLOT SYNOPSIS
Bandanna is the story of a chief of police, Miguel Morales , and two officers who once served with him in Vietnam and who now serve with him in a small town on the Texas Mexican border. Jake, who is resentful of Cassidy's advancement over him, is playing a dangerous double-role as policeman and guide to successive groups of illegal immigrant workers. With the encouragement of a morally bankrupt union organizer, Kane, Jake determines to convince Morales that his wife, Mona, is having an affair with Cassidy. In the end, groundless jealousy provokes Miguel to strangle his wife with her own bandanna, shoot his colleague, and ultimately, himself. The curtain falls on this desolate scene.) PROLOGUE: A moonless night. A desert. An irrigation ditch. It is November of 1968. The ghastly red rotating lights of police cars. A handful of illegal immigrants are crawling across the border. Each carries a cellophane bag containing the skeleton-costumes and masks associated with the Day of the Dead. A uniformed Jake emerges, carrying a heavy flashlight. He shines it on the face of one of the immigrants. A moment of uncertainty. Jake embraces the leader, they shake hands. ACT 1, SCENE 1:
