"Scotland's Winter" - Edwin Muir Now the ice lays its smooth claws on the sill,
The sun looks from the hill
Helmed in his winter casket,
And sweeps his arctic sword across the sky.
The water at the mill
Sounds more hoarse and dull.
The miller's daughter walking by
With frozen fingers soldered to her basket
Seems to be knocking Upon a hundred leagues of floor With her light heels, and mocking Percy and Douglas dead, And Bruce on his burial bed, Where he lies white as may With wars and leprosy, And all the kings before This land was kingless, And all the singers before This land was songless, This land that with its dead and living waits the Judgement Day. But they, the powerless dead

1. Introduction Edwin Muir in An Autobiography and his wife Willa in Belonging both describe their European adventures before and after the Second World War. Prague is one of their stations, and they experience the city in its prime in the early twenties as well as in times of hardship immediately after the war and during the communist putsch. Reading those accounts, one can observe the changes going on in the ancient European city; they are representative of the changes going on in the whole of eastern Europe at that time. On the other hand, though there is little contrast in the two accounts, one perceives certain differences in style and focus. Edwin Muir looks at the scene and events from a certain distance, perhaps out of a professional reporter's and writer's habit, although he does not claim objectivity. Willa Muir writes less from a writer's than a wife's position, which allows her to include more gossip and strictly personal impressions.

borne our loads But that free servitude still can pierce our hearts. Our life is changed; their coming our beginning. edwin muir.
http://www.kratter.com/End/TheHorses.htm
The Horses Barely a twelvemonth after
The seven days war that put the world to sleep,
Late in the evening the strange horses came.
By then we had made our covenant with silence,
but in the first few days it was so still
We listened to our breathing and were afraid.
On the second day
The radios failed; we turned the knobs; no answer.
On the third day a warship passed us, heading north,
Dead bodies piled on the deck. On the sixth day
A plane plunged over us into the sea. Thereafter Nothing. The radios dumb; And still they stand in corners of our kitchens, And stnad, perhaps, turned on, in a million rooms All over the world. But now if they should speak, If on a sudden they should speak again, If on the stroke of noon a voice should speak, We would not listen, we would not let it bring That old bad world that swallowed its children quick At one great gulp. We would not have it again. Sometimes we think of the nations lying asleep, Curled blindly in impenetrable sorrow, And then the thought confounds us with its strangeness. The tractors lie about our fields; at evening

Book Review: The Wilderness World of John Muir , Edited by Edwin Way Teale
Reviewed by Anthony Netroy
Of the great American naturalists of the nineteenth century, John Muir is actually the least known to our generation. [No longer true; this was written in 1955.] His books are not easily obtained , and most of them are out of print. [No longer true.] The cult of John Muir has been largely confined to the Far West, where devotees have kept his name alive in such organizations as the Sierra Club, and in connection with natural places like Muir Woods or Muir Glacier in Alaska. Few anthologists of American prose seem to be acquainted with the bulk of Muir's works, and the ideas he propagated have naturally more appeal to Westerners than Easterners. We must therefore hail with enthusiasm The Wilderness World of John Muir , ably edited by the sensitive naturalist Edwin Way Teale, a selection of writings arranged (with pertinent editorial notes) in such a way as to present in sequence the running story of Muir's life. While an anthology cannot give the reader the full scope and magnificence of Muir's books, it whets the appetite. Many who will dip into it will not be content to stop there. They will wish to read The Story of My Boyhood and Youth A Thousand-Mile Walkto the Gulf My First Summer in the Sierra Travels in Alaska Our National Parks , and the

muir was perhaps the last of those who had the kind of involvement with freedom Nellie edwin Teale, In Springtime in Britain he comes full circle and says
http://www.lib.uconn.edu/DoddCenter/ASC/pages/naturalhistory/Teale/webpages/davi
Teale often speaks of endurance. December 31 of "Circle of Seasons" (1953) finds him contemplating nature itself as a show of enduring:
There is, a nature, a timelessness, a sturdy, undeviating endurance, that induces the conviction that we have a place to stand.
He goes on to take a sort of comfort in the overall "endless repititions of nature."
Teale comments in "The Wilderness World of John Muir" (1955) that Muir had respected the Indians for having "adapted
themselves to their surroundings, fitted in with nature's ways, leaving hardly a scar upon the landscape." What Muir could not respect was their failure to keep up with nature, as Muir himself had. So Teale admires Muir, who was "in league with the stones of the field." Muir strode over a thousand miles at nearly one clip. Muir was perhaps the last of those who had the kind of involvement with freedom which Teale in "Autumn Across America" (1956) says "seems rare, more difficult to attain, more remote with each new generation." In later years, Teale also expresses his own place in nature in terms of travel. His five Journey books are now "classics" of a type. But did Teale lose anything by travel? In his case, doubtless he was able to compensate for rapid movement by his ability to retain an image and digest while on the run. For most of us, however, we would do well to listen to his advice to the naturalist, penned inyo his third odyssey, "Journey Into Summer" (1960):

Woman thus sees humanity as a collection of individuals of whom no two are identical, growing separately like trees in a common direction, expressed in visible forms, each of which is significant, a common unseen life. (28)
Extracts from Belonging
Yet there was always a press of work, and so I reverted to a student habit of mine, working at furious speed late at night into the small hours, after the vibrations of the day had died down. During the summers I sat up all night once in a while, hearing the birds sing at dawn and tumbling into bed for a few hours sleep after breakfast, but this I did only when a translation had to be finished in a hurry or proofs corrected against a deadline. I cannot now tell how I managed to finish a second novel, but it does not surprise me that I lost control of it in the second half, although the first is quite good. My first novel had come out in 1931; it had enough material in it for two novels, which I was too amateurish to realize at the time.
