THE FARFARERS
Farley Mowat
(Key Porter Books)
Farley Mowat began investigating pre-Columbian European voyages to Canada 40 years ago. In 1965, he wrote Westviking - The Ancient Norse in Greenland and North America.
The book sold well. But something always bothered him about that book and its conclusion that the Vikings were the first Europeans to cross the North Atlantic into Canada. And as the years passed, his nagging doubt grew stronger.
"That worm of doubt metamorphosed into an implacable presence that nagged until I capitulated and began what turned out to be a 30-year quest for a people who had disappeared from recorded time."
So writes Mowat in the preface of his latest literary offering, The Farfarers, in which he hopes, after 30 years of research, to have set the record straight.

It is difficult to write a biography of someone as unusual as Farley Mowat, whose writing includes his life stories and an auto biography. John Orange, a recent acquaintance of Mowat's, selected material from his books, letters, films and interviews and printed only what Mowat agreed to; thus, some incidents are omitted. Mowat's writing is "subjective non-fiction" and he distinguishes between "fact" and "truth." The general purpose of his work is to educate and reform but his sense of humour adds a great deal of entertainment. Through his controversial works he has examined the concerns of the Arctic and its native inhabitants, Newfoundland, Siberia, the Vikings, the trauma of World War II, whales and other environmental concerns. Orange sums up Mowat as "anti-authoritarian, intensely nationalistic, environmentally aware, and pass ionately romantic." The title derives from a "squib," which is the fuse used to ignite explosives or witty writing; both meanings are appropriate. Unfortunately, this small book is a dull portrayal of an exciting Canadian. It does direct the reader to Mowat's own works to find out the "truth" of each reference. The facts are nicely summarized in the five-plus pages of chronology and the three pages of "Works Consulted." The black-and-white photos add little but are interesting. Although Mowat is shown as an outsider, he has not come to life in this book. Orange does show insight into Mowat's themes and thus this book would be useful for independent study units.

"The Boat Who Wouldn't Float"
Happy Adventure is a schooner with a fatal flaw, it leaks like a sieve. Regardless, Farley is determined to sail this boat. This book was first published in 1969, but is a timeless piece of work. Mowat is a natural story teller and his narrative and anecdotes are brilliant. He wrote this during his eight year residency in Newfoundland. When I read this book, we were rafted up with a Canadian boat in Vero Beach. Our friends didn't believe he had done any of the things that he said he did; they claim he's just a "local" with some good stories. Regardless whether fact or fiction, this book is fun! The Ultimate RAB book list
This represents a summary of all books recommended, mostly in rec.arts.books, that I've saved the recommendation for. The list spans three years, and includes other book lists. The listings span the range from banned (or attempts made) books to those recommended for children, current bedside reading to books that changed someone's life. The only consistent feature of the books on this list is that someone posted on the net that they recommended it for some purpose. Almost all of the books present are ones I haven't read (which is probably what prompted me to save the note!) and some are books I've read and didn't like much. But, since others do, they're here. The list is somewhere over 1250 books long. You should be able to find something interesting here. Authors A-F

Never Cry Wolf The story 'Never Cry Wolf' by Farley Mowat is about of a young biologist. A biologist is someone who studies animals, usually in their own habitat. The time is the mid-1950's. The place is northern Canada. Farley Mowat is that young biologist. He has just finished university and has started his first job. He is being sent to the North by the Canadian government's wildlife service to study arctic wolves. The huge herds of caribou that once wandered the north have all but vanished. This destruction is being blamed on the wolves. Everyone knows, of course, that wolves are vicious, dangerous and useless animals that need to be destroyed to protect the helpless caribou. Farley's job is to prove that the wolves are the cause of the problem. Then the government will be justified in murdering the wolves. Farley Mowat has a wonderful sense of humour. He uses this sense of humour to poke fun at the government, people's attitudes towards wolves, and the inexperience of a young man on a new job. He is sent off into the north with all kinds of weapons which he quickly discovers he doesn't need. The wolves are not dangerous; they allow Farley to closely observe their lives. The native people think Farley is a little odd if not crazy. That he is crazy is confirmed in their minds when Farley begins eating mice! Farley has noticed that the arctic wolves are eating large numbers of mice. He sets out to do a scientific experiment to determine if eating only mice provides a balanced diet. Since he has no subjects to use in his experiment, Farley decides to experiment on himself.

By Steve Burgess May 11, 1999 F rance has Napoleon, America has John Wayne, Canada has a way of making you stop reading mid-sentence. Head for the movie reviews if you must, but make no mistake the Great White North does have its heroes. Typically, though, there's nothing intrinsically Canadian about them. In fact, their fame is usually the result of having shed that confining distinction. A truly Canadian celebrity is one who elicits the reaction, "I didn't know X was Canadian." Right. That's why X went to a speech therapist. Farley Mowat is different, and is a northern national icon. Mowat's books "People of the Deer" (1952), "Never Cry Wolf" (1963) and "A Whale for the Killing" (1972), among many others tell stories of the wilderness, the animals and the people of a hard, cold, sublimely beautiful land. It's Canada as the world knows it (when the world spares it a thought). But even aside from his celebrations of terrible northern grandeur, Mowat has two other attributes crucial to any quintessentially Canadian celebrity. First, Mowat is openly suspicious of America. And second, Canadians are suspicious of Mowat.

Reviewed in University of Toronto Quarterly by JAMIE DOPP
Like many Canadians my age, I grew up on a fairly steady diet of Farley Mowat's books. Decades later I still have fond (if vague) memories of Never Cry Wolf, Lost in the Barrens, The Boat Who Wouldn't Float, and The Dog Who Wouldn't Be. When I became an adult and started reading `serious' literature (which, at university, meant `English' literature), I stopped reading Mowat. For much of my early adult life, Farley Mowat seemed just a quaint and rather embarrassing `character' on the fringe of the Canadian literary landscape.
In recent years, however, I have dramatically reversed this attitude. Partly this has had to do with discovering my vocation as a professor of Canadian literature. Partly it has had to do with my political opinions (Mowat and I share many left nationalist views). Most important, it has had to do with a deep respect I have gained for Mowat's achievement as a writer. Like his contemporary Pierre Berton (a writer whose currency has suffered similar ups and downs in my mind), Mowat is a writer who has got the job done, who has established a distinctive voice for himself and has produced a very substantial body of work (over twenty-five books). That he has shown courage and integrity in his life as well as his art only adds to the reasons to treat his work seriously.

CLAIRE MOWAT graduated from the Ontario College of Art, and worked as a graphic designer for the early part of her professional life. After marrying Farley, she found herself assisting her husband by typing and editing his manuscripts. In the biographical sketch Claire submitted to the Canadian Writers' Directory, she writes, "It wasn't considered subversive, then, to share the workload with the guy you married. Ultimately he was the one who told me I could write well enough to do my own work. I did." Claire's first book, The Outport People, is a fictionalized memoir of life in Burgeo, where Farley was named custodian of the famous whale that beached there. Subsequent to her first book Claire wrote Pomp and Circumstance in 1989, and three works of fiction for adolescents: The Girl from Away (1992), The French Isles (1994), and Last Summer in Louisburg (1998).
