Biography: James Douglas Morrison (1943-1974) J ames Doug las Morrison was born in Melbourne, Florida December 8, 1943 to Clara and Steve Morrison. Clara was a housewife and daughter of a lawyer. Steve was an officer in the U.S. Navy. Jim had two younger siblings: a brother, Andy, and a sister, Anne. Anne was the youngest of the three. Jim, at an early age, was a fervent reader. Although he exhibited great leadership and intelligence, he also showed a tendency to challenge authority. This disrespect of authority led him to get kicked out of Cub Scouts for tormenting the Den Mother through constant misbehaving. Because of the position Jim's father had in the military, the family was required to move often due to transfer orders. The family moved from Florida, to New Mexico, and eventually to Alexandria, Virginia in 1958. While in Virginia, Jim continued to clown and heckle in and out of class. He became quite popular amongst his classmates, and eventually met Tandy Martin, his first girlfriend. During this time in Virginia, Jim also continued to read. He found interest in Nietzsche, Plutarch, Ginsberg, Michael McClure, James T. Farrell's Studs Lonigan, James Joyce's Ulysses, Balzac, and the French Symbolists (most important of these poets being Arthur Rimbaud , about who Morrison would write the song Wild Child about). By the time he reached the age of fifteen, Jim was writing poetry, painting, and was identified as having an I.Q. of 149. During this time he also made a habit of sneaking out of his house at night to go to sleazy bars downtown and listen to blues musicians.

James Morrison 12/8/43 - 7/3/71 Jim’s genuinely shy manner and soft, quiet voice was in direct contrast to the always drunk and/or stoned satyr who sang with such strident urgency, as he appeared onstage. Jim's grade school ambition was to become a writer. His idols were poets and joumalists including Rimbaud, Keats and Jack Kerouac. As a student Jim excelled in text work and reference work, devouring knowledge in areas of history, science, psychology, english and the arts, but was troublesome in class. He learned to make friends fast and not get too close as his father being an Admiral in the navy and a career man, moved around the country frequently. Jim went on to get a degree in Cinematography and actually made a movie. The film was greeted by a minority as a masterpiece and by several professors as the worst film they had ever seen. "Wierd" would have been a more appropriate description. Not long after that he bumped into an old class mate, Ray Manzerak, and decided to join Ray's band 'Screamin ' Ray Daniels ' - and try out some of his Iyrics. After a reshuffle in the band Ray and Jim with Robbie Krieger and John Densmore formed The Doors. They called themselves The Doors after Aldous Huxley's 'The Doors Of Perception' and worked for six months ending up at the most important rock club in Los Angeles, Wiskey a Go Go. By this time Jim was singing his own heady material and The Doors were fast gaining a loyal core of fans.

Jim Morrison In all likelihood, rock and roll legend Jim Morrison is buried in Paris's Pere-Lachaise cemetery. That fact, of course, hasn't inhibited numerous "sightings" of the Doors' lead singer since his would-be death in 1971. Chalk it up, if you will, to the rock icon's prodigious mythology - like Dead Elvis's perpetual loitering or the Virgin Mary's fondness for making cameo appearances on tortillas. Still, the circumstances of Morrison's death were quite mysterious and confusing. It's not surprising that a crop of postmortem rumors sprang up insinuating that by the good graces of assorted conspiracies - from the political to the supernatural - the Lizard King lives. Indeed, the official version of Morrison's death is in some respects even less believable than the surreal myths. Officially, Morrison died at about 5 a.m. on July 3, 1971, of a heart attacks, a rather improbable fate for a twenty-seven-year-old man - although somewhat less so for a rock star prematurely weathered by a decade of gut-flushing bacchanalia. As his longtime girlfriend, Pamela Courson, told the story, Morrison decided to take a bath in the Parisian flat one evening. Courson went to bed and the next morning discovered Morrison's corpse in the tub. Bizarre rumors began to surface almost immediately, undoubtedly nursed along by Courson's puzzling attempts to screw a lid on the news. Courson initially told reporters that Morrison was "not dead but very tired and resting in a hospital." Nonetheless, word began to wend through Paris that Morrison had died of a heroin overdose in the sleazy underground nightclub, Rock 'n' Roll Circus. (Another popular rumor had it that Morrison OD'd on cocaine, a drug that he was known to binge on.) Rumor had it that Morrison was hustled home and deposited in the bathtub in an attempted revival. Of course, there were no witnesses.
