    85. William Morris Art & Type
A collection of art and fonts based on the designs of legendary Art Nouveau designer william morris. From Ragnarok Press.
    http://www.ragnarokpress.com/artype/morris/main.html
William Morris was one of the founders of the Arts and Crafts Movement and closely involved with the Pre-Raphaelite artists of the mid-19th century. His ideal of integrating art, literature and graphic design inspired a generation of artists like Rossetti, Burne-Jones, Millais and Waterhouse. Morris was an artist, poet, writer and designer himself. He is probably best remembered for his fabric designs and his book designs for Kelmscott Press. He pioneered modern renderings of antique styles of type as well as the production of high-quality home furnishings to last for generations. Morris left behind a lasting legacy of quality and creativity which will continue to inspire artists for years to come. The Scriptorium's Morris collection includes an excellent selection of Morris' fabric designs and patterns, plus a collection of original fonts based on his type designs for books published by the Kelmscott Press. We have recently augmented the collection with new fonts, new patterns and the addition of a large selection of decorative borders, emblems and initials. Morris fabric patterns are excellent for use in web page design. They can be made into contiguous tiles for use as backgrounds on web pages, as we have done with the grape pattern on this page. They also make excellent backdrops for decorative pages in print. Each of the patterns in our Morris collection is a high-resolution image and suitable for use online or in print. Above you can see the original patterns from the collection. The new patterns added in the latest update are shown to the left.

    89. Ian Covell - William Morris : Dreamer Of Dreams
Comprhensive essay bu Ian Covell, on the writings of Willaim morris, illustrated with morris's drawings.

    Ian Covell
William Morris : Dreamer of Dreams
The book is very old, its hard red cover scuffed by the years, the edges of the pages unevenly cut, almost ragged. Idly, ignoring the spine, you turn to the title page. The Sundering Flood by William Morris. Its date of publication is at the bottom of the page in Roman numerals. Painstakingly you work it out. 1898. Very old, a first edition perhaps? Almost you replace it on its shelf, you haven't heard the author's name before. You relent, flick onward to the opening page of the story and read its first line. You frown, read the line again, then the next line, and the next. Breaking off you realise that you have read almost half a page. The shopkeeper is at your side, he asks if you want the book. You turn and ask its price. It seems reasonable the book is old, you may never see it again. One central truth is already obvious to you. William Morris was an artist. These essays will show some aspects of the man and his work, his beliefs and what may have shaped them, but everything will be pervaded by that one his work, his beliefs and what may have shaped them, but everything will be pervaded by that one fact: William Morris was an artist.

William Morris , the son of a successful businessman, was born in Walthamstow, a quiet village east of London , on 24th March, 1834. After successfully investing in a copper mine, William's father was able to purchase Woodford Hall, a large estate on the edge of Epping Forest, in 1840.
Morris was educated at Marborough and Exeter College, Oxford . At university Morris met Edward Burne-Jones and Dante Gabriel Rossetti. The three men were all artists and formed a group called the Brotherhood. During this period their work was inspired by the history, ritual and architecture of the Medieval period. Morris and Burne-Jones were committed Anglicans and for a time they talked of taking part in a "crusade and holy warfare" against the art and culture of their own time.

History Today May, 1996 William Morris - art and idealism.(Victorian Values)
Author/s: Charles Harvey For the 150th anniversary of Victoria's accession, History Today published a series of articles examining Victorian Values' through the prism of some of the key individuals of her reign and the ideas and movements they reflected and generated. With the centenary of the great queen's Diamond Jubilee coming up next year, we are returning to the subject and expanding the scope of the original series. in the first of our Victorian Values Mark 2 articles, Charles Harvey and Jon Press examine the aesthetic achievements of the multi-talented and pioneering early Socialist, whose life and work are celebrated in a major exhibition about to open in London at the Victoria and Albert Museum. William Morris was a man of extaraordinary creative energy who dedicated his life to the cause of art. Personal experience convinced him that art should not be the preserve of a small minority of professionals of refined taste and sensibilities, but should be a universal activity, natural to life, work and leisure. He wished to live in a society which eschewed the production of inferior, ugly wares, made without pleasure by tormented workers. In a decent society, which strove for beauty and relaxation instead of profit and personal advantage, the only goods worth making would be the necessities of life, and objects which were a source of pleasure to maker and user alike. Hence his famous dictum: 'art which is made by the people and for the people, as a happiness to the maker and the user'.

Morris, William 1834-96, English poet, artist, craftsman, designer, social reformer, and printer. He has long been considered one of the great Victorians. While at Oxford, Morris, along with his lifelong friend Burne-Jones , became deeply interested in the ritual and architecture of the Middle Ages. However, Morris's great awakening came through his readings of Ruskin, whose ideas on aestheticism and social progress he gradually adopted. In 1856, after being apprenticed to an architect, Morris attached himself to the brotherhood of Pre-Raphaelites and through the encouragement of Dante Gabriel Rossetti began to paint and write. In 1858 he published his first volume of poems, The Defence of Guenevere and Other Poems. This was followed by The Life and Death of Jason (1867) and The Earthly Paradise (3 vol., 1868-70), in which a group of medieval Norse wanderers seek a land where there is no death or misery. Although popular in its time, his poetry is not widely read today. With friends in 1861 he started the firm of decorators later famous as Morris and Company, which, in reaction to the growing industrialism, sought a return to the working operations of the Middle Ages and a revitalization of the splendor of the medieval decorative arts (see arts and crafts ). He made carvings, stained glass, tapestries, carpets, wallpaper, chintzes, and furniture. In the 1870s he founded the Society for the Preservation of Ancient Buildings. He became interested in politics and reform, joining (1883) the socialist Democratic Federation and forming (1884) the Socialist League. Two notable prose works came out of this political phase
