A Pioneer Perspective
by LeeAnne Lavender
The setting is the backwoods of Canada in the early 1800s. The key players are two young gentlewomen from England, born and raised in a gracious English home and schooled in all of the proper etiquette of the day. Envision these two forging their way, with their families, through the bush, settling onto tracts of land in Douro infested with mosquitoes, black flies and copious amounts of unyielding, harsh rock.
Within such a setting, replete with hardships, death, poverty and back-breaking labour, one might not expect to find literature and lofty thoughts. However, as Susanna Moodie and Catharine Parr Traill struggled for survival, their pens flowed, producing correspondence, fiction, and detailed accounts that were not only popular in their day, but have continued to influence the very roots of Canadian literature and history.
The more a person learns of these two resourceful and strong women, the more their stories take hold. Not only were they pioneers and writers, but their work and their personae have endured as symbols of Canadian heritage and settlement; their poetry and prose has inspired the likes of Margaret Atwood, Carol Shields, Timothy Findley, Tom King, Margaret Laurence and Robertson Davies. Elusive and enticing, their experiences seem to beckon the imagination, stirring romantic notions of endurance and success.

Grosse Ile Quarantine Station - Beginnings
Approaching the rocky shore and modern wharf at Grosse Ile from the southwest With 60 000 immigrants entering the colony through the port of Quebec in 1831, it was recognized that there was a serious threat of disease, particularly cholera. As a defence against this danger, the Assembly of Lower Canada passed a resolution on February 25, 1832 establishing a quarantine area east of the city. Grosse Ile was rented for that purpose. When she immigrated to Canada in 1832, Susanna Moodie visited Grosse Ile and she described the quarantine station in Roughing it in the Bush (1852). Her account reflects both an English gentlewoman's romantic view of Canada's wilderness and her prejudices against the Irish immigrants:
". . . I looked up and down the glorious river; never had I beheld so many striking objects blended into one mighty whole! Nature had lavished all her noblest features in producing that enchanting scene.
The rocky isle in front, with its neat farmhouses at the eastern point, and its high bluff at the western extremity, crowned with the telegraphthe middle space occupied by tents and sheds for cholera patients, and its wooded shores dotted over with motley groupsadded greatly to the picturesque effect of the land scene. Then the broad glittering river, covered with boats darting to and fro, conveying passengers from twenty-five vessels, of various size and tonnage, which rode at anchor, with their flags flying from their masthead, gave an air of life and interest to the whole. . . .

The Long Poem: Innovative Genre or Contradiction in Terms. A Bibliography
This bibliography supplements the materials available on Prof. Dr. Martin Kuester's webpage . The bibliography is not meant to be all-inclusive but represent a selection of articles and monographs which students might find of interest for their seminar presentations or term papers. Please keep in mind that not all of the listed items are available at the University of Marburg. In order to avoid unnecessary expenses, however, it is worth checking the seminar folder in the library as well; some of the material might already be on inter-library loan. A list of important links has not yet been compiled. The amount of webpages dealing with writers such as T.S. Eliot, Ezra Pound, and Walt Whitman is immense. For the time being, you should be able to be directed to the most important sites through The Voice of the Shuttle's web-directory If you should come across other material that in your opinion should be listed here, please do not hesitate to inform either Prof. Dr. Martin Kuester
