Moliere
French actor and playwright, the greatest of all writers of French comedy, 1622-1673
The trees that are slow to grow bear the best fruit. The greater the obstacle, the more glory in overcoming it. The duty of comedy is to correct men by amusing them. A wise man is superior to any insults which can be put upon him, and the best reply to unseemly behavior is patience and moderation. Things only have the value that we give them It is not only for what we do that we are held responsible, but also for what we do not do. It is a fine seasoning for joy to think of those we love. It infuriates me to be wrong when I know I'm right. I assure you that a learned fool is more foolish than an ignorant fool I always write a good first line, but I have trouble in writing the others. Jean-Baptiste Poquelin , best known as Molière January 15 February 17 ), French theatre writer, director and actor , one of the masters of satire The son of a Parisian artisan, Poquelin lost his mother when still a child and entered the prestigious Jesuits ' Collège de Clermont, to complete his studies. It is said that his father was very hard to him, or that in this college he met the prince of Conti, or that he was a pupil of the philosopher Gassendi , but these statements appear to be no more than rumours. In reality, Poquelin was a close friend of the abbé La Mothe Le Vayer, the son of the famous philosopher, in the years in which the abbé was reordering his father's works, and this allows to presume that Poquelin could be somehow influenced by them.

Moliere The Misanthrope The Miser The Physician in Spite of Himself Plays by Moliere ... Tartuffe (The Imposter) Introduction "Moliere" was the pseudonym Following his return to Paris in 1658 he gained immediate notoriety by playing Corneille’s Nicomede before the King followed by a farce. The King was to employ him in 1665, however. Moliere was himself the main draw for his plays and he seems to have been a splendid actor who was a disciple of Scaramouche and moreover could twist his face into any contorted shape. Of his characters, Tartuffe in Tartuffe (The Imposter) (1664-7) is one of the dramatist’s finest figures: a sensual individual who masks himself as an ascetic but must finally reveal himself for what he is. The School for Wives (1662) was also a popular success, telling of a man who gives his wife no education so that she will not be unfaithful and is straight comedy. In The Misanthrope (1666) there is an ambiguity in the very comedy of the central character Alceste; while in The Miser (1668) Moliere steers away from farce and depends on the incongruous and the absurd. His final play

The Misanthrope
by Moliere, 1622 Main characters Alceste - He is in love with Celimene and very cynical about people and the way they act. Celimene - She is conceited and shallow being everything that Alceste dislikes in a person. Philinte - He is a good friend of Alceste but just the opposite in character since he is less frank and more sincere towards others. Arsinoe - She serves as a foil to Celimene being just as clever but less shallow. Minor Characters Eliante - She is Celimene’s good and reasonable cousin. Oronte - He is in love with Celimene and a writer of poetry. Clitandre - He is another suitor trying to gain the hand of Celimene. Setting Celimene’s apartment - There is very little action and very much dialogue in this play which takes place in this apartment. Plot Symbols Alceste - He symbolizes the cynicism and hypocrisy of the manners of the time. Philinte - He symbolizes the sometimes false goodness and friendship of people. lawsuits - This represents irony and the effects of telling the truth since Alceste is punished by Oronte with a lawsuit for telling the truth.

To Turn the Critical Eye: Moliere, With Love and the vision of the baroque Often, I think Americans are convinced that we invented political satire, that David Letterman and Bill Mahre are the pinnical of political humor and social critique. After watching these two Moliere one acts, it is obvious that satire and the art of self-commentary is a long and solid tradtition. Throughout the course of the show there was much sending up not just of the ornate and frivilous Baroque culture but also of the people who participated in them, ahowing how easily one gets trapped in their own misconceptions about the proper way for the world to be. The opening section, Les Precieuses Ridicules, Taming of the Shrew this play calls us to look closer, through the humor of the surface to examine what kind of society prompted these playwrights to pull us to them through the ages to examine more closely the absurdity that surrounded them.
